As diverse as you all are, we've noticed that common elements found among Jewel's fans are intelligence, friendliness and an insatiable appetite for new music, especially live music. During the summers of 1997 and 1998, I was personally fortunate to host and attend several house concerts in New England, where many East Coast online Jewel fans were invited to join us and enjoy intimate performances by some of the most talented San Diego musicians and songwriters. Most New Englanders who attended would have had little chance to discover these artists otherwise, and it was an unforgettable experience for all concerned, including the musicians. The enthusiasm for these special events was infectious and Jewel, Lenedra and many of us who love intimate live performances as much as you do, and have seen how much fun can be had when Jewel fans actually get together, have had a plan. Phase one of our plan is about to begin and of course, you are a big part of it! Jewel is announcing the creation of Soul City Cafi, a multi-faceted program designed to encourage and expose emerging artists across the country. The launch of Soul City Cafi will coincide with the opening of Jewels North American tour in mid-June. At eight selected venues on the tour (see itinerary below), two emerging musical acts and one spoken word performer will be showcased during a special Soul City Cafi segment at the opening of the show, prior to M2M's support set for Jewel. Aproximately a dozen artists have been chosen and given rotating slots in the various cities. At the end of July, the artists will convene in Jewels home base of San Diego for a Soul City Cafi festival. (More details will be announced about this over the next few months.) In addition, selected artists are likely to make appearances at invitation-only performances at private homes to Rock the House, giving many of you and your online friends an opportunity to get together and listen to these artists in an intimate setting. In addition, an opportunity is being given to two film school interns to work with a seasoned videographer to shoot footage of the shows. Their efforts will provide content for the internet so you can follow the Soul City Cafi artists performances throughout the tour. Moving forward, Soul City Cafi will serve as an umbrella for a number of events focusing on the discovery and support of emerging talent. On tap for the near future is a nationwide Soul City Cafi contest slated to begin in August. Artists on local and regional levels will compete for the opportunity to perform as part of a final play-off at a Soul City Cafi arts festival to be held in early 2003. (Again, more details will be announced.) Along the way, there will be opportunities for you to directly interact with JeweLink and Street Team members at various events, as well as work with us co-ordinating plans for the future - all while enjoying great company and plenty of music! Jewel says, "I envision Soul City Cafi as a terrific opportunity to expose emerging artists to audiences, both in their own area and on a wider scale as well. There are so many great performers out there who deserve to be heard, and the hardest thing to do is to get yourself in front of enough people to get the ball rolling. I am incredibly excited to be able to create a grassroots situation through which they can build a real fan base." Prior to M2M and Jewel's performances, the following eight venues will include a Soul City Cafi segment on the summer tour: June: June 15 Broward Center For The Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale, Florida June 22 Jones Beach Amphitheatre, Wantagh, New York June 23 FleetBoston Pavilion, Boston, Massachusetts July 3 MeadowBrook Music Festival, Rochester Hills, Michigan July: July 7 Nautica Pavilion, Cleveland, Ohio July 19 Next Stage at Grand Prairie, Grand Prairie, Texas July 26 Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, California July 28 SDSU Open Air Theatre, San Diego, California We'll be keeping you informed as things progress and additional Soul City Cafi events are planned. There's exciting plans being implemented this year (and next) and YOU and MUSIC are at the center of it all. We look forward to having you join in on the fun. Just wanted to give you a quick recap from the MS Walk 2 weeks ago (finally got all the pledges in and totalled). Team EDAF outdid themselves (ourselves?) this year, raising $1455 for the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. Thank you to those of you who supported the team and for those who volunteered (I still wish Kelly G. had volunteered at the Freehold location - she gave free massages to the walkers in Ridgewood! How awesome is that? LOL). The 7 plus miles walk was pretty rough - man, was I sore - but the embarassing part was that Melanie's mother and grandmother beat us back to the finish line by a good 10 minutes! But there was a good omen that day....we passed a topiary llama in someone's yard! Hehe. You just never know when and where a llama will turn up, but somehow there's almost always one present at an EDA event. :-) Ok, over and out! Does anyone have anything that they want to see on the US tour? On her last tour I thought her stage was rather dull, even though Jewel needs nothing behind her to rock! It would be nice to have the video screen again, but I know that most small venue tours don't use them, but I hope!! And I remember the lighting in 1999 to be really good, so I hope it will be amazing again. Maybe a little better stage then just a black curtain would be nice? What are your hopes for the tour? ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #202 ***************************
