Yeah, it's probably a semi-scam, but it's cool to have something of mine in there. The others were published but I just didn't buy the book. However, I was curious about the scam deal a while back, especially since 2-3 of my poems were chosen month after month about that time. So I submitted a so-so poem I'd written that I wasn't that crazy about. And I never heard anything back from it. So in some way they do choose what they think is "good". I suppose they get thousands of poems in monthly. I doubt they could fit all of those into the monthly publication. Just a thought. But needless to say, I've tired of the site. I haven't submitted anything to them in quite a while now. And I never heard anything back from it. So in some way they > do choose what they think is "good". There was a teacher who saw the contest, and submitted a poem from each student in her class...each student turned out to get "accepted" into the publication and offered all those wonderful things, the books, the tapes with your poem being read by something, the plaques, the trips.... and it was a grade one class. Someone else submitted "the twelve days of christmas" song word for word, and got accepted. Someone else wrote the same sentence over and over again, and got accepted. I'll try and find the weblinks for those stories - I sincerly doubt they choose anything, I'm betting to guess that the one poem you did submit got lost in the mess somehow, I'm sure some do. > I suppose they get thousands > of poems in monthly. I doubt they could fit all of those into the monthly > publication. Just a thought. I sincerly doubt that they really believe that many poems are worthy of publication. There are 300 pages in the book that I bought when I was 14 and submitted a poem. There are 6 poems per page. That means there are 1800 poems in that book. and I paid $80 for it. That means that if everyone who's poem was in there bought the book (and I'm not even talking about the "author bio" you have to pay extra to have included) they would have made $144,000 off that ONE book...and they now publish about one a month....that's 1, 728 000 they make in a year *JUST* off of people buying the book, nevermind all that other ridiculous garbage they throw at you to try and get you to buy. I'm sorry, but it's not a "semi-scam", it's an outright scam, which unfortunately isn't illegal. So you're right, they do lose a couple of poems, but not because they read them and decide which ones are worthy of publication, but simply because they can't fit them all into the book. It's vanity publishing pure and simple. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 May 2002 15:31:02 EDT From: GroovGerLC@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] EDA Shirts Were do I order a EDA shirt from? Kevyn was one of Jewel's good friends.. I remember hearing him mentioned from her lips and saw them together on TV many times.. DIED: Makeup artist to the stars Kevyn Aucoin, 40, died Tuesday at New York's Westchester Medical Center from complications of a metabolic disorder, his friend Marcy Engelman told the AP. He had been treated for a pituitary brain tumor in the past year, she said. Among Aucoin's canvases: Britney Spears, Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Julia Roberts and Gwyneth Paltrow. A political activist, especially for gay rights, he was also the author of three books, "Face Forward," "Making Faces" and "The Art of Makeup." Hello angels, > Because of the accident, Jewel was forced to cancel her first two dates on > the tour, which will now start May 13 in Germany instead of the planned > Friday start in Italy. I can understand why she cancels the first 2 dates but why Paris ?? She will play her shows from May 13th til Pinkpop on the 20th but then she cancels Paris on the 20th !!!!!! I am so disappointed. I can figure that it would be really hard to do 2 shows on the same day for Jewel but why cancel Paris and not Pinkpop ??? Plus Pinkpop is a festival on 2 or 3 days, Jewel could have played there on the 19th. And there's no talk about rescheduling Paris later on.....that's a shame... I am doing a research paper in my Gender in Lit class on women in writing. I'm tying in writing with songwriting(Jewel will be used!) I have to do a ten minute presentation so I was going to play a song. However, I'm a littl stuck. I'm not sure weather to use "Me and a Gun" by Tori Amos. Or "Painters" by Jewel. I still have to run this by my teacher. But if anyone has any thoughts, let me know. Thanks! I have a high-speed internet connection, and when I click on the "high speed" option on JEWELJK.com, it takes me to activities, but it doesn't have "games" in top right corner. If I use the "low speed" option, it has "games " in right hand corner, but the sight doesn't work as well in general . Sigh. I couldn't believe my good fortune, so I just had to share it with some of you who might appreciate it... So...I went to Chicago yesterday to see Steve play for the third time in the last 10 days. Stumbled upon a little neighborhood record store not too far from the venue, and the guy had a copy of Save the Linoleum for $6.99! I couldn't believe it...I've been trying to get my hands on that for years, and have never seen one at a reasonable price. The store owner said that when he gets stuff like that, he puts it out in the store for a month, and then if it doesn't sell he puts it up online. Lucky me! Also, I found a Rugburns single of "The Fairies Came" for 39 cents!...didn't even know there was one. Got Steve to sign it for me, and he even said he had forgotten it was out there. I said, "How could you forget it's out there...you're in a pink dress with butterfly wings on the cover!"
