And it occurred to me that over the years there have been quite a few who have really gone above and beyond the call of duty and done things to shape this list, help others, even saved lives. Many of these people have not received the recognition they deserve. So I've decided to introduce EDA of the Week. Anyone is free to post the name of someone they would like to publicly thank or recognize and then everyone else who also has a few words of praise for that individual is encouraged in the following week to add their own feelings, thoughts, or experiences in either a public or private post to the individual (EDAW?) There are no strict rules and even the "week" is just an approximation, so don't worry if you're a couple days late or anything! And, no, I'm not "in charge" of this....anyone is free to post their own EDA of the Week. Just try and space it out so there aren't a hundred the first week and then nothing! LOL. ******* So the first offering of EDA of the Week goes to DENNIS HARRIS! My story: I first joined the EDA's back in early '96 (or maybe late '95) after seeing this blond chick open for Peter Murphy. I had never heard of her but was blown away by her voice, her diverse songs, and especially her humor. After running out and buying PoY, I was dissappointed that much of the energy of the live show was lost on the cd. So after searching all the best NYC bootleg stores and finding nothing live (WWSYS hadn't even been played on radio yet) I decided to get onto my new computer and find out just what this "internet" thingy could do - LOL. I eventually stumbled onto this list and discovered an amazing thing called "tape trees" where you could send a stranger blank tapes and postage and they would dub all sorts of incredible music for you and send it back to you for FREE! Is this heaven, I thought? So after getting some of these tapes that I listened to incessantly, I grew kind of bored of the talk on the list. Having just turned 30 I really didn't care what Jewel wore at each concert or whether she was a vegetarian, etc. I was about to unsub when talk of what became JewelStock started to appear. I figured, hmmm, free Jewel concert a couple hours away, well maybe. But what really swayed me to stick around was the fact that the EDA's started to realize we were all going to be meeting, why not start to get to know each other beforehand? So one by one many of the screennames I was used to seeing started turning into real people - we started to talk, then we started to laugh. And what/who was making us laugh the most? Dennis Harris and the introduction of the Harris Brothers (tm). The Harris Brothers came so close to upstaging Jewel at JewelStock that she even blurted out "Ah, Goddam ye Harris Brothers!" during the show (check your JS tapes if you don't believe me :-). During the early years, Dennis became the driving force behind some of the best gatherings. Even when he wasn't the organizer, just his presence was enough to bump the event into the fun stratosphere. Remember Laser Tag at BV '98 (was it '98 or '97?). OK, maybe he got a little over enthusiastic and the game went on just a tad long. But hey, the FIRST seven hours were a blast, right? ;-) There has also been Goofy Softball, horseshoes, Cinquo de Mayo complete with Mexican hat dance & pinata, etc. etc. First and foremost, Dennis has ALWAYS without fail made everyone feel welcome - - even when he was in someone else's home. People like me, who tend to be shy around strangers (and you can't get much stranger than eda's buh-dum-dum!), Dennis would introduce himself to and then introduce them to all the other people he had just met. If you looked up the word "ice breaker" in the dictionary it would probably say Dennis Harris. But Dennis had more on his mind than making sure everyone had fun. He has this silly little idea that he can help make the world a better place. So when the idea for a formal foundation started being kicked around, he was right in the middle of it. And when no one seemed to want to step up to the plate and take the helm, Dennis did so and was voted in as President of the EveryDay Angels Foundation which has been active since 1997 in the arenas of water conservation, the homeless & hunger problems, blood drives, raising money for disease research, etc. Well, I hadn't intended on writing quite such a novel here, but believe it or not this is the highly edited version! I'll let some others share their "Dennis experience" (hehe, yes that is definitely the right word!) now. Dennis deserves a proper thanks for what he has contributed to the EDA's over the years. And next week hopefully someone else will chime in with a new EveryDay Angel of the Week! :-) Amy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 May 2002 13:23:20 EDT From: DixieJewelAngel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC: Britney Spears Smoking or Lolly lol... I believe in God."The New York Post is carrying the photo today showing the singer, dressed in short-shorts, apparently turning her back to the photographer. The paper quotes the singer's spokeswoman as issuing a "no response" when asked whether Britney's smoking might encourage her young followers to light up.Spears has been challenging her good girl image by wearing more revealing clothing and performing more provocative stage shows. She told the Associated Press in 2002, "I'm on stage, I'm performing; Janet (Jackson) wears clothes like that, Destiny's Child wears clothes like that b like everyone! And I was always pinpointed. I never understood that."Her albums, "Baby One More Time," "Oops...I Did It Again" and the most recent release "Britney" all went platinum. ~michele ~the dixie angel (bummed out angel who can't see poltz cause i'm underage) ~Listen to Jewel Break Me Here http://www2.fanscape.com/jewel/emails/breakmefriend.html ~Don't ever give away what you can't take back ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 May 2002 13:42:17 EDT From: DixieJewelAngel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC: Poetry.com My poem was selected for something called "Letters from the Soul" on poetry.com something about publishing it...Does anyone know anything about poetry.com and if I should do it? ~michele ~the dixie angel (bummed out angel who can't see poltz cause i'm underage) ~Listen to Jewel Break Me Here http://www2.fanscape.com/jewel/emails/breakmefriend.html ~Don't ever give away what you can't take back ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 May 2002 10:48:37 -0700 (PDT) From: BenFrancis@webtv.net (Ben Simpelo) Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC - Gavin Charts Unfortunately, Gavin suspended operations a couple of months ago. Don't do it. It's a scam. Everyone gets their poem "picked" to be in the book. (or at least 99% of the entrants) you'll even get letters saying they want you to read your poem in the poetry convention is DC. They send that to everyone. They'll send you a form to submit a poem to "The best poets of (year)" Thats a scam too. You'll receive a blue slip of paper that says you're poem was the "Editor's Choice". before you think thats an honor, just know that they send that to every other person who did not win "Grand Prize" All they want is your money. And when you spend $80 on their "anthology", you're poem will appear on a page with 12 other poems in small print. Poetry.com (National Library of Poetry) is the biggest money making scam... it's sad how people fall for it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 May 2002 12:13:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Quattrini Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Poetry.com Well, in a way, it's nice, because you can get your poem published. However, poetry.com is sort of... well, no a scam per se, but they publish poems from anyone who submits one so they can sell you books, tapes, and such that feature your poems. On the plus side, you can add "Published Poet" to your risumi... I did :P Of course, I bought the book before I figured out what was going on :/ They will put your poem on their website, accesable by doing a search for your name. So it's up to you whether you want to get it published, and whether or not to buy any of their stuff. I say to all: go ahead, submit poems to them every month if you'd like, *let* them publish it (you still retain the rights to the poem) just don't buy anything. There's no way for you to know for certain if your poem actually got published after that or not (unless you get a friend to submit one and you only buy one book to see - but I wouldn't want to waste my money anyways!) but if it did, what can it hurt you? If you're actually talented and your poem warrants merit, you never know who might see it in there...and like Jason said, you can then add "published poet" to your 'resume' or whatever...just keep in mind that some people are aware it's scam when you tell them where it was published - and will probably give you a big lecture :) If you are *really* interested in looking to get published, look into other sources: I've had a few poems published in online publications (it may not be as "satisifying" since you don't get to see it in *real* print, but it's still going out to a ton of people and it publication nonetheless!), there used to be a great website called themestream that you could somewhat 'showcase' your poetry or other writing on and get paid for it when people viewed it - unfortunately it went down, but there a probably a few other sites set up a similar way out there. Submit your poetry to literary magazines, annual or semi-annual poetry anthology publications that are actually sold *to the public* unlike the NLP books that you can only buy through them. Ignore the poetry contests listed in the backs of newspapers/teen magazines for the most part - go out and buy yourself a writers magazine where they list *real* contests put out by reputible publishing sources. Enter those :) You know...this has been brought up so many times on this list, we almost need to put it in the FAQ ;) ~ Sandy ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #190 ***************************
