The transcript was sent in by two EDAs, Michiel van Gorkum and Adina Friedman. Mike :-) ********************************************************** DishDiva says: Welcome to MSN Live! We are pleased to welcome back Jewel to MSN Live. Jewel' DishDiva says: Jewel's latest single is "Break Me" from her hit CD "This Way." DishDiva says: Your hosts this afternoon are Trish, Budd, Mark and Joan. If you have a question about MSN Live, they are the ones to ask! DishDiva says: Jewel, welcome back to MSN Live! It's great to have you back! Jewel_Live says: Hi from Texas! DishDiva says: Let's dive in! justhadgirl in Onstage3 asks: How much do you practice your voice techniques/sound, or is just performing and recording enough practice for you? Jewel_Live says: I used to practice a lot while I was learning to sing, but anymore I don't really practice. Jewel_Live says: I sing different every night and that's practice for me. ucsbem in Onstage1 asks: Jewel, I just wanted to know where "absence of fear" came from? what inspired you to write it? It's my favorite song of yours. Ibought tickets to your L.A. shows in July. I can't wait to see you! Thanks! Jewel_Live says: I wrote that song about what kind of boyfriend I'd like. I was single at the time and that was my idea of the ideal man. And thanks for buying tickets to my shows! DishDiva says: Speaking of your shows. . . cutie_gurlie007 in Onstage1 asks: What is your favorite song that you perform? Jewel_Live says: It varies, it's usually whatever my newest song is. Whatever song I just wrote. Ms6Strings in Onstage1 asks: What kind of electric guitar do you play? Jewel_Live says: I like Telecasters, 60's. allyson_bruce in Onstage1 asks: Is Jupiter written about a specific person? Jewel_Live says: No. It wasn't really. It was just sort of an ode to love. Sparkle871 in Onstage1 asks: Do you feel pressured to look a certain way or maintain a particular image by being a part of the music industry? Jewel_Live says: I think as a woman I've always felt pressured. Even before I got famous, in fact I think I felt more pressure before I became famous. I'm really glad I've never been too obsessed before it got too neurotic. Jewel_Live says: Right now I don't really worry about that, I just want to be healthy. I don't want to be the skinniest person in the world, I just want to be healthy. I just prefer to write songs, and be healthy. I'm not perfect, but I'm all right. Musical_Flower22 in Onstage3 asks: How has your personality changed over the period of time that you have been a singer? If not, why do you think it hasn't changed? Jewel_Live says: I think I changed a lot with fame. I used to be a lot more outgoing. Now I'm just outgoing on stage or with friends. I'm more reclusive, I don't really go out to bars or the movies, I just stay home. I also find that I'm more guarded, that I don't really Jewel_Live says: like about myself. It's an interesting process. I'm just watching it. DishDiva says: Are you more guarded because you are well known and fans are attracted to you? Jewel_Live says: If all fans were really nice and sincere, I wouldn't have a problem, but every day you have one up to you that is just dead mean. (laughs) And you can't tell until it happens, so you tend to be a bit guarded. Sometimes you let your guard down too late and Jewel_Live says: wish you would have been nicer sooner. Hunny_Bee1319 in Onstage1 asks: Musically speaking, do you feel that since you began singing that the musical aspects in society have changed in favor of your music or against? Jewel_Live says: I think both. I think it's been both. I started out in the height of grunge, and my kind of music became real popular. After spirit became real popular again, and I don't know about now. I think I'm against trend right now, it's a really urban based Jewel_Live says: format. Getting "Break Me" on the radio is difficult. I don't really think about that, I just make music that tickles me and see if it sells any records. jkfan25 in Onstage1 asks: Which of the songs in your new album is more personal in this stage of your life and why? Jewel_Live says: There's a song on the record that's a bonus track called "Long Slow Slide" that is very cryptic and also very personal. They're all pretty dang personal. sensitive_tip in Onstage3 asks: Hey Jewel, what's up hun. Do you prefer large venues when you tour, or smaller more intimate places? Jewel_Live says: On this tour I asked to be booked in smaller venues. I missed doing smaller venues because I can talk more, tell more stories, and really feel the audience, so I think small is good this time. shortypt in Onstage1 asks: Who decides what song goes to the radio stations next-you or your record company? Jewel_Live says: I do. The label usually has to agree with me, but we've always usually seen it eye to eye. rick_in_glendale in Onstage3 asks: At what point in your career did you know that you had "made it"? Jewel_Live says: You only make it for a split second and then it's gone. It's always about what the next single. It's a very fleeting thing. I guess people recognizing me is one way to quantify. In my mind making it would be to be still making songs in 40 years. So I Jewel_Live says: haven't made it yet. I'm still a punk kid. (laughs) Yukon_Jack5 in Onstage1 asks: Jewel, I saw you play in Perth, Australia and it was an incredible show. When are you coming back to Australia? DishDiva says: Is your Summer tour US based? Jewel_Live says: No. It's Asia, US, and Europe, and maybe South America. MedicatedLion in Onstage3 asks: What inspired you to change your style on "This Way"? It has a different sound than your previous releases (but I still love it!) NewWildWest in Onstage3 asks: Hi Jewel! Do you prefer singing alone just with your guitar or with a band? Jewel_Live says: This records more like my live shows. I've always played a lot of rock music, but I've never been able to do it in the studio. I wanted to emulate a live show, show the diversity that I didn't think was coming across in my other records. Jewel_Live says: Both. I wouldn't trade loud rock music for anything. Being alone with people with just my guitar is beautiful, it's harder than just playing rock and roll, it's a real challenge, and that excites me. But I don't think I'd trade rock music for any of it. Jeweloftheweb in Onstage3 asks: You've said before you love country music. Any plans to release a country album? Jewel_Live says: Thought about it. Thought about doing a double release, doing one record to country and then this record. Country music has always been in my stuff. I toned it down on my second record, they're all on waltz time. Music just sounds like music, if you hear Jewel_Live says: a slide guitar in a Stones song you don't necessarily think country. JewelHeadquaters in Onstage1 asks: Are you going to write any more books? Jewel_Live says: Yes. I'm working on a book right now that is a slender novella of just love poems. EvilBreed0 in Onstage1 asks: Any plans to ever star in a film? Jewel_Live says: I did an Ang Li movie called "Ride with the Devil." I've been looking at scripts for 3 years, it's hard to find a good script with a good director. Luckily I have a day job. cutie_gurlie007 in Onstage1 asks: When will your new single be made into a Video for TRL? I gotta know so I can be sure to vote for it! Jewel_Live says: MTV said if I get radio play they'll play it. It's the never ending conundrum, so everyone call radio. michaelsjewel in Onstage4 asks: I was really interested in the song "Shadow's Play" that you performed on Jay Leno in 2000. I was sad that it didn't make the album. Do you hope it makes the next one? Jewel_Live says: I love that song. I wanted to put it on the record, it ended up that there were just too many songs, which is a nice curse. I would like to see it on the next album, but I don't know. RadicalRabbit1 in Onstage3 asks: Jewel, how often do you think about home? Is Alaska home? You've been so many places! Jewel_Live says: I still really consider it my home. I get real homesick this time of year. I think open spaces is what I miss. That's why I enjoy going on tour, I write best when I'm away from the world. I'm only touring at 3 weeks at a time and then I get 10 days off at Jewel_Live says: a time. juliejulie000 in Onstage3 asks: Hi Jewel! What are you the most proud in your career? Jewel_Live says: I guess I'm real proud I've never had to compromise anything. It doesn't mean I didn't make any mistakes, but at least they're my mistakes. I've never been asked to sell out and I never have sold out. I guess that's what I'm most proud of. TylerWiseman in Onstage4 asks: What kind of books are your reading nowadays? Jewel_Live says: I'm reading a book I picked up in Thailand, it's called "Sex Slaves" it's about the sex slave trades that goes on in Asia. It's kind of dry, she's a professor, so there's not a lot of gossip. DishDiva says: leslieboo says: What is the best thing your parents ever taught you? Jewel_Live says: My dad taught me to work hard and be tenacious and my mom taught me to be thoughtful of other people and self aware. amsterdam_fourtwenty in Onstage4 asks: Jewel, do you come from a musical family? Jewel_Live says: Yeah, I come from a very talented family. Almost all my aunts, uncles, and cousins can pick up any instrument and play it. They can all paint, sculpt, carve. I was raised doing a lot of art and sports. That's why for me writing poetry and songs isn't a Jewel_Live says: big deal. DishDiva says: What other artistic talents do you have? Jewel_Live says: When I was in arts school I majored in visual arts and voice, I minored in drama and dance. (laughs) You may just see me break out in dance. DishDiva says: Well the other day Sheryl Crow told us she could twirl a baton. So you're in good company! Sapphire_Dragonfly in Onstage3 asks: What Anais Nin reference is hidden in the song "Do You Want To Play?" Jewel_Live says: If I told you, that wouldn't be any fun. It's a line out of her diaries, it's an insult. DishDiva says: You woman of mystery, you! highwaystarr in Onstage1 asks: I heard you loved horses ,what is your favorite breed? Jewel_Live says: I like Quarter Horses I guess. They're just a good all around horse. Guitarangel25 in Onstage1 asks: Is Ty or your mom going on tour with you this summer? Jewel_Live says: Ty will be going to the PBR (Professional Bull Riding) so he'll be there for that. My mom usually doesn't come out. She usually just catches a couple. Jewel_Live says: When I was in arts school I majored in visual arts and voice, I minored in drama and dance. (laughs) You may just see me break out in dance. DishDiva says: Well the other day Sheryl Crow told us she could twirl a baton. So you're in good company! GemJewel_0 in Onstage3 asks: Hey Jewel, how old were you when u learned to play guitar? I am only 16 and was wodering if its too late to learn? Jewel_Live says: I didn't learn until I was 17. My first songs were just the same 4 chords over and over like "Who Will Save Your Soul?" If it's good enough for Bob Dylan, it's good enough for me. (laughs) MasterTimine17 in Onstage1 asks: When did you realise that you would like to become a singer, and what was your mission? Jewel_Live says: I was raised singing. My parents had shows in hotels and I sang professionally with them. My dad and I became a duet singing in bars. I always felt that I would make a living singing. I felt that I was an all right singer because people would clap at the Jewel_Live says: end, but I didn't think I was Stevie Nicks or anything. So I was looking for a job at 18, I didn't think I had what it took to make it. When I realized that what I really enjoyed was connecting with people, it made me feel less alone, and I thought I Jewel_Live says: could make others feel less alone, it gave me a sense of purpose. I wanted to wake up every day, and it made me feel alive. So going into the music business with that idea, was good for me. I didn't want to be famous or rich, I just wanted to make art. So mizzou2992 in Onstage3 asks: What advice would you give to anyone pursuing a dream? Jewel_Live says: every decision I make every day is based on that goal. How I can maintain and nurture art. I think it's what's kept me grounded in my career. Fame is something people lose their footing on. Jewel_Live says: I think pursuing your dream is the most important thing in life. It can be having a husband, being an accountant, scientist, or a rock star. I think everyone has a purpose and when you're young it's easier to remember what that is. Then you get older and Jewel_Live says: people tell you that you can't do that for a living. But people will see your drive and it's infectious. Like me singing in a car, who would think I would get signed to a record label. It's unthinkable. DishDiva says: Jewel, from all of your fans here on MSN, thanks for joining us to talk about your latest CD "This Way." We'll see you this summer on tour! Jewel_Live says: I was real impressed with the sincereness and thoroughness of the questions. I like these internet chats. DishDiva says: Thanks and we'll see you next time. DishDiva says: Thanks to Jewel and Atlantic Records! DishDiva says: Thanks also to you the MSN Live audience for your fabulous "thorough" questions and to tonight's great team of hosts Joan, Mark, Trish, Barb and Budd. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #175 ***************************
