Hey Guys - this is long, but if you're interested in getting Jewel's new song on the radio then please read it. I promised an update about Break Me's radio performance.. and somebody posted about it which reminded me. Basically, so far it doesn't look good. Here are the facts: It's doing "ok" at Adult stations. It debuted at #38 on the Adult Top 40 chart and moved to #36 the second week. Standing Still debuted at #23... The problem here really is that Break Me is only being played on 40 of the 90 Adult stations. Basically what's happening is that many stations are still playing Standing Still to DEATH (it's still Top 10 at both Adult formats - Modern and Adult Top 40). HOPEFULLY stations will move to Break Me eventually. However we don't want the song to be a song that just doesn't go away on that format (ie - Train's Drop of Jupiter). I don't think that will happen... I think it will just take time for Break Me to take over. However it would help if you requested at these types of stations. And make sure you specify Break Me and not just Jewel. The way to identify an Adult station is if it DOESN'T play Britney Spears or Jennifer Lopez.... pretty much. If it's a station that's still endlessly playing Standing Still - that's an adult station. At Pop the song is going nowhere, as of now. It's playing on something like 26 of 130 stations... which is pretty dismal. It's also not being played very much on these stations. The problem here isn't the fact that the stations are still playing Standing Still (they aren't). It's just that the song is a tough sell, especially when Pink and J-Lo rule the charts. However, if Underneath Your Clothes (that new Shakira "song") can do as well as it's doing, so can Break Me. Again, you just need to request. I think it's pretty obvious which stations are Pop stations.. call them and request. As those JeweLink rules said, call stations once a day and don't harrass them or piss them off. If they play the song call and thank them. If you don't know the number of the station then go here: http://radiofinderizer.net/cgi-bin/radio.cgi?artistid=artist243 You can search by State and it brings up a bunch of radio stations. If they don't have it then search online - most stations have websites with numbers to call. Also that address lets you request online. You can request all over the country if you so desire. I think it's better to request radio stations that you could potentially have access to hearing, because I think the radio stations know where the calls/emails come from. But one good thing to do is choose your state and just email every station on the list. There's only 5 or 6 in each state I think. I still have high hopes for the song. I don't think Atlantic would choose the single becuase they thought it would completely sink Jewel's album. That'd be stupid. They must have some kind of method to their madness. I think they chose it for two reasons: 1. It's a fan favourite so they assumed fans would request it or want to get it on the radio. That's where we come in! 2. It's quite different and quite a stretch from everything else on radio so if it does succeed it'll have quite a big impact. I personally think their secret weapon is the video. From what we've been told this is quite a piece of work, and we all know that good videos can have a huge effect on the popularity and success of a song. I highly doubt that Shakira song (Wherever, Whenever) would have been as successful if it weren't for the video (which I personally thought looked cheap, but oh well.. it was popular). Same goes for Jewel's old songs. The videos for YWMFM and Foolish Games had a huge impact on their success. Especially YWMFM... Her newer videos haven't been anything to speak of reallly.. but hopefully Break Me will change that. All in all, Break Me is an odd choice for a second single... it's not what I would have chosen... but I think it can be a hit with a little work from us. And honestly, it really takes literally FIVE minutes to call a station and request. And even less time to email them using that online thing (http://radiofinderizer.net/cgi-bin/radio.cgi?artistid=artist243)....... and it will be worth it! FACT: Clear Channel has a big piece of outdoor advertising in the US. FACT: Clear Channel freely admits that it does not play very much new music. They prefer to test music to see if the masses might like it, giving the true listeners very little choice. FACT based opinion: Much of what is played on Clear Channel stations is what many people would call "overproduced" and some might even venture into "crap". Question: I wonder how many of Jewel's concerts are hosted in these venues this year? (all of her texas shows are in CC venues) Question: What type of power would a company that owns most of the radio stations, a good portion of the venues/promo business have over an artist?
