I read *one* email about it (a jewel-link email I think...for people on her street team), and it said a special URL would be given out with a password to access tickets when they go on sale (april 13th). If anyone knows ANYTHING about this for the Toronto show.. can you please email me (privately so as not to bug anyone on the list)? Thanks so much. My email is Lori.Bonari@utoronto.ca . I've been really busy with school...so that's my excuse for not reading my mail ^^ Lori P.S. I'm not just lazy..I would go through old digests and read them to find out if my account didn't delete all my email periodically. And I've since learnt that 'The Other Woman' is not quite a new track after all ;) It's a cover of a song by Nina Simone, of the same title :) Check it out, it's pretty amazing. Also, I should mention that the fan who threw the toy is our very own Emily :) There's a picture attached, and I'll probably get it scanned later or something. Jeanette ************ http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/npfo631.html Is Jewel losing her lustre? BY JEANMARIE TAN Apr 6, 2002 JEWEL was grumpy and not in the best of moods, according to a reporter who interviewed her hours before last night's concert. Clocking one and a half hours, the singer-songwriter's This Way concert was half an hour shorter than her gig here three years ago. And that's surprising, since she's just released a brand new album. Furthermore, a full house of 4,500 at Harbour Pavillion in 1999 has whittled down to a cosier, 2,500-strong crowd at the Suntec Convention Hall, with pockets of empty seats glaring from the sides. Could Jewel be (gasp!) losing her sparkle? Yet the leftover army of loyal Jewel lovers (expats and locals ranging from mid-20s to 40s) begged to differ. They lapped up everything their angelic goddess had to offer - every sigh and scream, warble and wail. They cheered robustly and unending declarations of "I love you, Jewel!" punctuated every tune. Especially when Jewel, 27, belted out hits like Standing Still, Hands, Who Will Save Your Soul and Foolish Games. - - ONE GROOVY BABE! - Looking every bit the rock-cum-country chick with her unkempt blonde mane, black micro-mini and thigh-high leather boots, Jewel initially looked stiff and uneasy, clasping her wrists and wringing her hands as she sang. But when the screams intensified during the third song, the Alaskan-born chanteuse got her groove back and those pitch-perfect vocal gymnastics went into full swing. "What do you feel like hearing?" she toyed with her captive audience in her saccharine-sweet babyish voice. Suggestions were hollered in all directions, prompting her to joke: "I feel like I'm on The Price Is Right." And when increasing proclamations of love interrupted her acoustic guitar intro to You Were Meant For Me, she teased again: "Let's get the 'I love yous' out of the way. But I don't see a lot of gifts here!" Immediately, a tiny horse soft-toy was tossed at her (cowgirl Jewel loves horses, by the way). Later, when she asked - "Any fans of rodeo here? Guess not many cowboys live here. How about cowboys at heart?" - we could guess what was coming next. While most stars shy away when it comes to their paramours, Jewel talked about her rodeo champ boyfriend Ty Murray with coy pride. (He co-wrote her new song, Till We Run Out Of Road). And is that a sparkly ring I spy on Jewel's wedding finger? Hmmm. The humorous rapport with her fans continued when she announced: "This is the polka portion of the evening. It was inevitable. You'll be stunned by its poetry." Instead, the idiosyncratic, whimsical lyrics ("I had a cold and started to sneeze/Wiped my nose on my sleeve/Do you wanna catch a cold with me?") left us in stitches. In the middle of the concert, Jewel commanded everyone to move forward to the stage. Those sitting in the front row excitedly charged ahead and pressed themselves against the barricades, whereas the not-so-lucky rest of us stood on our seats. That's when Jewel really cast her spell - swaying her hips and doing some sultry undulating a la Aaliyah in Queen of the Damned. Okay, so there were none of the poem-readings or quirky anecdotes that her live act is famed for. But phew, at least Jewel ended with her bullet-speed yodelling - the crown jewel of every fan's dream concert. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Apr 2002 00:46:51 -0700 From: "Stacey Hamilton" Subject: [EDA] NJC: Britney and writing Actually you're wrong. Everytime a new setlist appears I've been getting more and more disappointed. I don't particularly want to see "This Way + The Hits". I don't mind certain things being fixed... I think the NWW/WWSYS combination works really well. But overall the shows have really been too similar, and too oriented toward This Way. She could include a few more songs from other albums. Why ONLY Life Uncommon from Spirit? Where's Down So Long? That was always fun live. Where's Do You? Where's Deep Water? She says the band knows that, why not play it? Where's Barcelona? That was GREAT live. Where's Absence of Fear? Where's almost ALL of POY? She only ever plays Little Sister, NYA, Morning Song and the hits... and Angel Standing By. What about the better songs on the album like Amen, Painters, Daddy? I'm not saying she needs to play all these songs every night. I'm saying she has MUCH more of a choice now... she should utilize it before she bores herself into oblivion, once again... and we have to wait another 2 years for the next album, and then when she tours that record she only plays those songs live cause she's bored of playing This Way songs cause she played them every show for a year! It's a vicious cycle! The most dissapointing part is how BORINGLY similar the acoustic sets have been. YWMFM, Cold Song, Little Sister, Everything Breaks? Must she play these songs at EVERY concert. She has hundreds of songs to play. I think during the acoustic sets we have to be armed with lyrics and just yell random requests and force her to play them...... I'm hoping that she's using these early shows as an opportunity to get the songs from This Way down live... and once she starts touring on a more regular basis she'll start to get creative. I mean I'm sure I'll enjoy the concert I see whatever she plays... but as somebody who actually quite likes checking out the setlists after a show... seeing the same songs everytime I go there is pretty boring. Especially since they update like HOURS after the show has just ended.... it's kind of anticlimactic to see almost the exact same setlist "come through" ... Where someone posted this quote from britneyspears.com: "Not only is she not afraid to curse on this > album, Britney also explores new musical styles, > including funk, soul, and rock. Not to mention > songwriting five of the songs are co-written > by Britney herself."" Co-writing a song is not the same as writing. Usually they sit you down with a professional songwriter and you just contribute a few ideas. Basically, it doesn't take a whole lot of songwriting talent to "co-write" a song. I've co-written a few songs with people and some people contribute more than others, so I'm not saying she is totally not putting anything in, but most pop artisits that "co-write" do it more to seem legitimate than to actually try and write something. It's more of an image thing than an actual integrity thing. As I said, I cant vouch for spears girl because I wasn't there, but let's not say co-writing is the same as writing. It really detracts credit from people who actually are songwriters and put the time and energy in. If we all could have professional coaching in music...more of us would be selling millions. Some artists won't do it because getting their own personal music out is more important than trying to be a star. I think she's pretty and has a strong voice, but I think she shouldn't dress as sleazy as she does. She doesn't have to do that to sell albums. The people who buy the highest percentage of her albums are little girls who think she is great and now are trying to be like her. She needs to keep in mind all of the people who are watching her, and be a better roll model. Also, why is she and now N'SYNC swearing? Looking at this in a business way, all it's going to do is cut the amount of albums they sell because moms are going to tell their little girls "you can't have that, they say bad words". Like I said, their biggest following is little girls, and also, just because they start swearing, that won't make older people like them more. But whatever. Anyway, about writing the songs, I think Britney should start writing her own songs completely. People would take her more seriously. Well, sorry. I'm rambling, but I'm done now... ~ Fairy Angel ~ ..."Look for a lovely thing and you will find it.
