I know we did this a few months ago, but now that we've all got some distance from the album and have had a chance to reflect on it, and think beyond the excitement of a new album from Jewel and all the press and hype etc... I think maybe a lot of us might have slightly adjusted our grades. I know I have. This is not just for songs but for the album version of each song. So factor in production and all that. So even if you love the song live, grade the album version. Here are what the grades mean: A+ Basically perfectly done. A Great songs with 1 or 2 minor things missing B+ Good songs, well done... nothing specific I would change but I just don't get "that feeling" when I hear them. B Decent, but essentially filler C Good song, badly done. D Bad song. I only included the grades I used... A+ New Wild West, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone - great songs, well produced, nuff said. A Jesus Loves You, I Won't Walk Away, Sometimes It Be That Way, Cleveland - - there are only very small things separating these songs and the A+ songs. Jesus Loves You has great lyrics but is SLIGHTLY overproduced, I Won't Walk Away is very well produced but the lyrics are occasionally a LITTLE bit preachy, Sometimes It Be That Way is missing a verse in this version, and Cleveland is great but should either be country or not be country... not teeter on the edge. B+ Grey Matter, Do You Want To Play, Serve the Ego - Serve the Ego is close to an A because I LOVE the way it's produced. B Til We Run Out of Road - nice, well produced, but in the end filler. Really good live. C Break Me, Everybody Needs Someone Sometimes - the remix of Break Me is better because, as Scott said, if you're gonna fuck up a perfectly decent song by overproducing it you may as well fuck it up royal, not do it half-assed. The remix is soaring and dramatic, like any good radio-friendly ballad. But this song is LOVELY simply solo-acoustic, as was proved on the Tonight Show a few weeks ago. Everybody Needs Someone Sometimes is bordering on an A live, but it's album version sounds too country (and the song is not), the drums are too hollow sounding and it's just missing something... D This Way- frankly, it's a cheesy song... I know it's supposed to be sincere, but YWMFM's sincerity worked, This Way is just sloppy writing - I mean she says "forever" like 15 times in the song. I'll do Spirit and POY too, but without the commentary: POY A+ Foolish Games (album version), Amen A WWSYS, Painters B+ Pieces of You, Angel Standing By, Daddy B Little Sister, Near You Always, Morning Song, Don't C You Were Meant For Me (the remix was better... the album version is annoying cause of her voice), Adrian (again, her voice...) D I'm Sensitive (I know it culled the EDA name ... but i HATE it) SPIRIT A+ Do You, This Little Bird A Down So Long, Enter From the East B+ Hands, Absence of Fear B Barcelona, Deep Water, Fat Boy C Kiss the Flame, Innocence Maintained (two songs that should have remained acoustic), Life Uncommon (crappy production), Jupiter (like the radio version better) D What's Simple is True Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 23:57:00 -0800 From: "Jewel Fan" Subject: [EDA] NJC: Dawsons Creek Hey... I'm continually baffled as to why she seems to insist on the over production and therefore ruination of once beautiful songs. I think that the quality of her songwriting has most DEFINITELY improved since 1994 or whatever, but I still prefer the first album just because of the feel it has. Basically no slick dudes were able to get to it to fuck it up. M2M I, myself, am an M2M supporter. I bought their first album and enjoyed it for what it was. I don't know about Jewel opening for them even in Norway though. I mean, they outsold Jewel there and in Asia, but Norway isn't exactly a powerhouse in the world market. Although, I do have a random fact on Norway to add. I believe I read somewhere that Norway had the most equal distribution of old folks, middle aged people, and youngsters. That is to say, they have equal numbers of all. Anyway, I'll cheer for them when I see them...although I might be tempted to throw in a "Play Foolish Games!" - - Wilcher ps...I think they wrote "Pretty Boy" for me. You kind of sing the song to yourself and you strum back and forth on the same chord until you sing the word it says to switch chords on (then switch). Also, it's helpful to listen to the song and hear what the artist does. Truthfully, though, you have to do most of it by ear (when to switch, how much to strum, ect.) . So, if you sing the song to yourself it may help you hear when to switch.
