'This Way' entered the german charts last friday at #13. eastwest records just announced it 5 days early. It's the 2nd highest entry of the week. (A CD of a fictional Band in a german TV show entered the top 10, never heard it, but knowing the show it's prolly merchandise crap) 'This Way' is still advertised at the front page of amazon.de so it shouldn't slide much next week. 'Standing Still' was also released this monday. But it has low chances of a decent chart position. I tried to buy it yesterday and checked 3 big stores. They didn't even order copies. Can't buy it -> no charts (as german charts are pure sales charts). Jewel has some airplay though, she was on the radio a few times last week. I tried to buy several CDs yesterday. Noone has 'Standing Still', Lisa Loeb's new 'Cake and Pie' is not released over here (it's a great CD though). And I tried to find Wonderwalls new single, but it's released next week (check those girls out, remind me of the early Bangles somehow...). 'Everywhere' by Michelle Branch was the only CD from my list that they had. Take care, Christian ___________________________________________________ GO.com Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Mar 2002 10:14:41 +0100 From: Francois Cartegnie Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel's > teeth Damn. But not Spivey Leeks' "love" that "was best on the run", nor the "love" in "Nicotine Love", neither of which is love at all. Nor is it Jewel's "love" of chocolate ("It's like chocolate. I love it"). It's the love that answers her question: "Does anyone believe in love any more true love?" "Break Me" is a quintessential love song, the best and most moving Jewel has written since "Emily". It's up there in emotive power with "Emily" and "Nicotine Love". Genuine love takes commitment and commitment takes courage and that is what this song is about. "I want to love without fear," Jewel has said. The great fear is of exposing oneself to the risk of hurt: "I will let you undress me / But I warn you, I have thorns like any rose / And you could hurt me with your bare hands / You could hurt me with with the sharp end of what you say". But there can be no genuine love without a willingness to take that risk. Commitment also means abnegation of the self, putting the loved one first, before one's self, letting go of the self, particularly the reasoning self: "But I'm lost to you now / There's no amount of reason to save save me Feels like being under water / Now that I've let go and lost control". As she has said elsewhere, "Under the water I hear who I'll become Under the water all resistance drowns." Of course, this idea of selfless commitment is anathema to those who, in support of the predominant ideology of possessive/selfish individualism ("Each man for himself"), treat others as merely objects to be used to satisfy their own desires ("People being used") or as victims to be subjugated. That sort of "love" is "nicotine love", which "is like barbed wire running through my veins". Rather than "subjugation", which implies coercion (the Romans forced their defeated enemies to pass under the yoke, "sub iugum"), and there is no trace of coercion or force in this song, it is about submission. Now "submission" is an ambiguous word, with positive and negative connotations. "Break Me" is about positive, voluntary, freely given submission, a courageous commitment to the loved one, a willingness to be broken (in the two senses of hurt and tamed) and to be made, shaped by the loved one. Thinking about "Break Me" brings to mind the love poems of Muslims like Jalal-ud-din Rumi, of other Sufis and mystics. Jewel has said somewhere that Rumi was an influence and his theme is submission to the loved one (Islam means "submission"), which leads to oneness with the loved one/God. It's also no accident that Jewel quoted the Greek, non-theistic mystic Plotinus in the cover notes to "Spirit" - there are mystical elements in "Hands" too. Now, while I'm an atheist, I can appreciate the idea of the mystics that we are all God ("We are God's hands ", but my objection is that "God kills children with our very own hands", but that's another story). There is also Jewel's idea that we are in a sense all angels. There is a religious/spiritual element in "Emily" that I think reverberates in "Break Me": "It's like an empty altar / no angel in sight / religion with no temple / no place to take my worship to / no god for my eyes to see / no fruit to lay at the feet of Emily." The attitude to the loved one is the same in both songs; but one is a song of loss and the other a song of commitment. "Break Me" is also a very physical, sensuous song - the repetition of "Just let me feel your arms again" , with stress on feeling: "Just let me feel your love again Kiss me once / Well, maybe twice / Oh, it never felt so nice". Jewel emphasises that love is both physical and spiritual at the same time. So you can see that I really "love" this song; it moves me deeply every time I hear it (even with the backing band on the CD, which I feel detracts from the power of the song as sung solo with just guitar, as on "Exhale"); and I get a lot out of it, as you can see - as I do out of so much of Jewel's writing. Hopefully between now and then it'll get a bunch of pre-impact adds... that should be an indicator as to whether or not it's going to be a massive hit.... steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Mar 2002 07:36:19 -0800 From: "Larry G."
