She performed in "Carri", probably the most beautiful theater in the Netherlands. This summer, it will be five years since I first heard Jewel, because of YWMFM. In October 97, I went to her concert in Paradiso, Amsterdam as well, when she was a relatively unknown artist over here. It wasn't the one where she did the opening for Willy DeVille though which she mentioned yesterday. That must have been a few months before. However, yesterday I instantly realized why I fell in love with her music 5 years ago and why I still am! I never saw such an authentic, talented artist before. She plays her own music and really enjoys what she's doing. And her music is just uncomparable with anything else! I am happy and privileged that I now saw two concerts of her! And she's so funny to! When a fan came on the podium to give her the lyrics of 'Boy needs a Bike' (JIJ WAS HET HE MICHIEL!! HEHE, GOED MAN!"), she spotted a typo and said saracastically: " I don't mean to get picky but I can't work under these conditions!" Haha, it was a fantastic concert: "Jewel, thankx a million for a great evening!!!" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Mar 2002 05:46:06 -0500 From: "Ummelen, Marcel - Voridian" Subject: [EDA] Review Amsterdam concert Hello ! I will write my report over here of the Amsterdam concert last night. Like I do in every review i will include some chapters on stage, clothes, musicians, venue, crowd, etc. Fashion Police... The fashion police thinks that its on the edge of ok. She was wearing the black top with the line "Born To Be Wild" on it like she did the night before at the Edison award show which I attended as well. Her pants was shinny gold (in a story she joked thatit was stolen from shakira in a moment her bodyguards were not paying attention. She knocked down Shakira and stole her pants ;-)) and her shoes had the same color. Nice combination however. Not my taste. The band was wearing not very exceptional clothing except the guitar player who I think was very cool. The musicians were great. This band is much better as the guys from two years ago. The individual qualities are less I think but this band is playing together and is a unity. The bass player was terrific in my opinion. The acoustic guitar player was doing good but his technique caused some strange high tones sometimes. Its something you can't change but my preference is to see Jewel play herself the acoustic guitar. Well, those times have gone. I think we have to forget the fantastic 97 period. I will never get that feeling back again I suppose. The stage was sober decorated. The lights were sober as well. Its the artist who has to make it and that happened. The venue was sold out. There were some open seats but I think it was nicely filled. And then we continu with the crowd which was totally layed back. You "foolish" people (not meant to offend). Hey you guys on row one to three... Stand up at "Love me, just leave me alone" like in the 1999 tour and party !! I was waiting for that moment at the end of the evening (i was sitting to long away from the stage unfortunately) but even at the encores people stayed seated and just clapped to ask her back on stage... WEIRD! Jewel even made comments and sign with her hands to get the crowd going at the last song before the encores but she was not succesful. She has an image of being a performer to listen to and not to party on and it will stay that way no matter she does (my opinion again). Too bad. Ok the show... I dont have the setlist but try to remember the point in the show i was touched by. Just a start, later more.... The setlist is on my minidisc ;-)) She asked who was in Paradiso back in summer 97 and i shouted and It seemed I was the only one ;-)) Then two girls in the crowd shouted as well so we were with three of us ;-)) Three out of appr. 2000 who were there back in 1997. I consider myself old now ;-) Standing Still, in the first part - was a great version - New Wild West - Terrific band performance Boy needs a Bike - Fantastic moment for a fan on stage holding the lyrics for her. Well done ! Little Sister - Hesitation of playing this one because she said she did it thousands times. She did it still. YWMFM and WWSYS - new style and i dont like it as much as the original acoustic versions of former tours. Oh too many songs. If I had the setlist now I could comment on what happened but this is so hard.... I will try it later again when i have the list in front of me. As a final comment I would like to thank Marleen for your company over the years at the Jewel-concerts and again I had a great time being there with you. You guys who travel through europe to see all concerts: stand up and make a party at the heavy end of these shows. Jewel will love it ! It was beautiful night and goes into the books.... (but still will take position after the 1997 concerts ;-))) Bye, Marcel. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Mar 2002 12:42:39 -0300 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: Re: [EDA] Break Me: Remix, or Re-recording? I believe it was only a remix, as Jewel was in Europe. I don't think they would change THAT much of the song, although I wish that, because Jewel's voice on it is pretty annoying... Anyway, I'm not happy with this new single at all, I have never been a big fan of Break Me, I even prefer seeing This Way as a single, but... I hope it succeds. I hear songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" all the time on the radio. That song is 11 years old now, and Nirvana hasn't even been a band the past decade. And other bands that are still around still get their early songs played a bit more than the newer ones. It's just about whatever the listeners prefer to hear. That's what the stations tend to play so they can keep their ratings high. ~Stacey~ >I'm sorry, but I just find that really REALLY funny how they STILL >play >POY songs on the radio... when she's had 2 other major Cd's >out... Slated to begin on June 14th at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa, Florida, the tour - Jewel's first since the summer of 1999 - will hit major amphitheaters and arenas across the U.S. and Canada. Throughout the tour Jewel will be presenting a variety of emerging new artists as her opening acts. In addition, the tour will also feature special guests M2M, whose new Atlantic album, "THE BIG ROOM," is available on March 5th. "THIS WAY," Jewel's critically acclaimed fourth album, was released last November 13th. The RIAA platinum-certified collection - which includes the top 5 hit single, "Standing Still" - was produced by Dann Huff and Jewel, marking her first work as a producer. "Break Me," the soaring new single from "THIS WAY," is set to ship to multi-format radio outlets nationwide on Monday, March 4th. A companion music video is currently in pre-production. Jewel is set to appear on NBC-TV's The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Thursday, March 14th. In addition, she will be VH1's "Artist of the Month" for March, kicking off with a re-broadcast of her 1999 concert special, Jewel: Rockin' The Rockies, tonight at 5:30 PM EST (check local listings). Jewel will spend April and May preparing for her North American tour with a series of dates in Asia and Europe, including main stage appearances at such world-renowned music festivals as Germany's Rock Am Ring and Holland's Pink Pop, as well as a pair of concerts at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall. - -------------- so we should start to hear break me on the radio from monday. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Mar 2002 19:39:30 -0300 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: [EDA] Break Me remix I am thinking that the remix of Break Me may just be that they cut off the 2nd verse (feels like being underwater... water fills my soul), to shorten it. It would be the best to do, because as the song is very slow, it can't be long. Jewel has already sang it plenty of times without this verse. Meaning, not recorded over again. Also it could mean a much faster version of Break Me. So comparing it to something like Sarah's "Angel" may not even apply. We'll have to wait and see though. I think it'll be quicker with more overall sound, and something that would make it much more radio friendly. YWMFM was sped up...and it too was remixed before it was released as a single. So I think Atlantic is looking at things like that, and going with what worked in the past. But you never know....we all just might hear some dance beat mix of it now....hehehe. Has anyone heard that cheesy early 90's song called Rhythm is a Dancer? It's by the band called Snap. Well not really a band but that's what they went by. Now imagine Break Me being played to the beat of that song. I hope that doesn't happen though. Or how about the version of Break Me that's used for the enhanced video portion of the This Way CD? I'm wondering if that one may be used? It's already a remixed version of the audio-only version on the CD. And I think it's better, and more radio friendly. But they may be doing something completely different too. So we'll all know next week! ~Stacey~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Mar 2002 13:44:59 -0600 From: "Rachel DeSchepper" Subject: Re: [EDA] Review Amsterdam concert I'm so happy that Jewel is playing "Boy Needs a Bike" again.
