This summer? Is that when M2M will open 4 her? I don't rightly know. But I'd like to see her again in Jones Beach that is 4 sure. The way the sun sets on the water is so cool. And the way the stars make a perfect backdrop when night falls; yeah that's the stuff. I love Jewel, but I can't travel to different countries to see her I'm sorry. When? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2002 01:59:41 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Popification of Jewel First of all - let me just say I'm no happier about M2M opening for Jewel than anybody else. However, I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt. From what I've heard they're actually quite talented - they write their own music, play their own instruments, and can sing. I have no problem with "pop music" as long as the people performing it can actually call themselves musicians... now M2M is not the kind of music I would listen to on a daily basis... but if they can prove themselves to be good at what they do, then they have my respect. Just because a group has been hyped up in the past to be some pre-teen Mickey Mouse Disney Channel pop duo (when they were all but 14), doesn't mean they haven't grown beyond that. I mean if I hadn't given Jewel the opportunity to prove that she was better than "Hands" or "You were meant for me" then I probably wouldn't even be here now. Furthermore, did it ever occur to anybody that perhaps the reason Atlantic is pairing M2M with Jewel is to try and alter THEIR image, not Jewel's. It seems like people are jumping to the conclusion that because Atlantic has chosen M2M as Jewel's opening act, that they're all of a sudden trying to push Jewel to the teen/pre-teen market. Maybe they're trying to expose M2M to a slightly more adult market. M2M don't have a particularly large following - it's not like all of a sudden a bunch of teens/pre-teens are gonna go to Jewel's concert based on M2M, and presto! Jewel suddenly has a teen/pre-teen fanbase. If anything a bunch of typical Jewel fans (which is a huge range of people) will go to a Jewel concert, see M2M, and a certain percentage of these fans may actually (shock!) like them. My point is - an opening act is chosen based on the idea that the fans of the headliner might be exposed to and/or like the opening act. Therefore, Atlantic is trying to open M2M up to Jewel fans, not the other away around. My other point - besides M2M opening, what else has Atlantic done with the current album release to indicate that they're pushing Jewel to a overly popified market? The publicity stills that made up the promotional posters/album cover etc were extremely tasteful black and white pictures that didn't seem to me at all aimed at a teen/pop crowd at all. Jewel hasn't graced ANY magazine covers, besides the Vanity Fair music issue. Don't you think if Atlantic were aiming for a pop crowd she'd be on the cover of every teen-based magazine in the country? It seems to me that the only thing Atlantic have been doing with the press for this record is trying to reach out to Jewel's fanbase (hence all the internet based marketing). They sent her on the talk-show rounds, she did print inteviews... that's it. Atlantic were letting her fans know she had a new record out. That's it. There was nothing about the promotional campaign that indicated to me that they were/are especially aiming for the teen market. Lastly - when Jewel says she's not writing songs for the radio anymore... I believe her. I don't know about anybody else, but I do. Reason: Jewel has ALWAYS written commercial songs. Look at WWSYS, YWMFM, Foolish Games, Down So Long... all written before she got famous and all majorly commercial hit-esque songs. And if you think Standing Still is some kind of song constructed purely for the radio.... well, I'd like to point you in the direction of the new singles from Alanis Morissette ('Hands Clean') and Sheryl Crow ('Soak up the Sun'). If you wanna see music written for the radio, just turn those on. Why do you think Hands Clean is a big hit and Soak Up the Sun will be a MAJOR hit? Becuase both of those songs were written with the radio in mind, there's almost no doubt in my mind. Standing Still WASN'T a major pop radio hit - I wonder why that was? Mirror Mirror hanging on the wall. Hello, I just wanted to put my thoughts in on the whole M2M thing. I actually bought M2M's first album and I thought it was pretty decent for a couple of 14-15 year olds. They actually had a hand in writing their songs and they play their own instruments in concert. But anyway, they are indeed, teeniebopper, but they are in no way anything like NSync or Birtney Spears. To ME, the 2 girls in M2M are just as good if not better than Ms Branch and even people like Merideth Brooks. I don't know if I think it is a good idea or not for them to open for Jewel, but I do think that alot of the people are misjudging them. Their new video/song actually is quite different from their first album. All I'm saying is M2M is not on Jewel's level, but they are good enough to play Lilith Fair's sidestage. I'm still for Patty Griffin signing with Atlantic and opening (I don't know if she has gotten a new record label yet) or Heather Nova opening. Those might be a better match eventhough I realize there are Heather and Patty fans that feel their artists are above opening for Jewel. I personally love them both, but think they could use some Alaskan butt-kissing to get ahead. Thank you. Sincerely, - - Wilcher. Here's another idea. To convince Tori to stay with Atlantic, they should do a one on one, duel tour showdown. Jewel and Tori...Atlantic's dream concert. I'd pay a king's ransom to see that. Of course this probably would make Tori leave even quicker. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2002 18:57:39 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] M2M... ok i got the digests i was missing, so im all caught up on the news of M2M openning for jewel this summer. i still have no clue who they are. ill have to go to their site and see who we are talking about before i say anything. i think its only fair to give them a chance no matter who they are. i mean they cant be that horrible if jewel sees something in them. maybe they have changed a lot since the last time a lot of you last heard them. and there has been a lot of talk about it doesnt matter who is the openning act. well i agree with that to a certain extent, cus either way im gonna see jewel so ill be happy no matter what. but its always a plus when the openning act is enjoyable as well. now nobody will ever live up to steve openning for her, that was just too perfect. but at humphreys i have to say i was very pleased with jillian spear openning for jewel. id never heard of her, but she really impressed me. id buy her cd for sure. so she was definately a plus. so i guess we need to give these girls a chance. i mean, jewel is. alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail.
