Today's Subjects: ----------------- [EDA] Hamburg show review ["Tom Hall" ] [EDA] jewel eyes [JeWeLsTaR386@aol.com] Re: [EDA] Jewel's first setlist/"set" lists in general ["Tom Hall" Subject: [EDA] Hamburg show review It's long but worth reading I hope. Here's my review of Jewel's (fantastic) concert in Hamburg last night: First off, I got my POY cover signed! Me and my friend Natalie who came with me went round the back of the hall to see what was going on because there were video cameras and lights and stuff (they were filming a German soap or something). Anyway, there we were standing there and out of a door comes a blond and two guys. I did a double take but then thought 'nah, can't be'. Well upon looking at the mystery blond pulling out in a car, it was definitely Jewel :). Hey she was wearing a hat, I couldn't see her properly! So we did the logical thing and waited til she came back... Which she did. And I asked for her autograph, told her how much I love her music (she said 'thankyou, i appreciate it') and asked her to play Boy Needs A Bike. She said she would if she could remember it. I said I'd help her out - she didn't play it in the end though. She couldn't stay for long, this guy was pushing her inside, but she was very gracious and nice. She's sweet, I was so nervous that she'd be a bitch like people have said on the list but she was great. She's so cute as well, she's small and looks really fragile, while on stage she looks so strong :). OK, so we got inside and sat down, and who else should sit in front of us but two crazy Dutch fans who travelled up with the Dutch fan of all Dutch fans, Michiel. I can't remember their names but we talked to them and they were pretty funny. Kept us entertained before the show started. And the show was awesome. The setlist was, as has already been said, not perfect. But, taking into account that this tour is really to showcase her new album to the European market, it was OK. No matter what the setlist was though, Jewel was on top form tonight - perfect voice, a lot of fun banter with the crowd and she was so appreciative that we turned up :). THE BAND. The band were actually great! Like many other EDAs, I've had a bit of a problem getting used to Jewel with a band, especially now there's no Steve, but they really did seem like they'd rehearsed a lot, and they were finally comfortable with each other. So don't worry people, the band's OK. The sound for the new album tracks, as well as Hands, was pretty similar to what it sounds like on the album. The instrumentation is pretty much unchanged, but it does seem a bit more raw. She did play Break Me with the band though, which I'd have loved to have seen acoustic. That said, the acoustic sets were the best part of the night. She took requests - she did Stephenville for me (yay). In Deep Water she could barely remember the chords and forgot the 'seeping out like cheap gin...' line. I shouted out 'seeping out' but she still couldn't remember the rest of it :). You Were Meant For Me was the most incredible version I've ever heard of it. She was so seductive :). Everything Breaks was the biggest surprise of the night, and that was possibly my favourite song of the night. Great, powerful version. Jewel's really working on that wail! She's so good at it now. It was used in a few songs, notably Life Uncommon (another great version, with some great wailing), Love Me Just Leave Me Alone of course. And Who Will Save Your Soul. Wow. This gets better and better with every tour. It started off with a pretty similar sound to the Spirit tour version, and she did the little guitar copying thing... But then she let out this long, powerful scream with the band pumping behind it, it was possibly the best moment of the show, she really let rip :). The New Wild West. Another incredible performance. This song has the markings of a true Jewel classic, not least because it sounds equally as good whether it's acoustic or with the band. On Conan she was brilliant acoustic, but with the band this song has so much energy and, well, I had to get up and dance a bit... Great, great song, by far my favourite on the new album. The first encore really sent shivers down my spine. Per la gloria d'adorarvi just shocked everyone, including me - even though I'd heard it before I still didn't expect it. And then Chime Bells. If you're bored of it, be prepared for the a capella version. She's changed the melody a bit... At first I thought she was off-key but nooooo, this version is, if anything, even better than the old one. And the yodeling is always fun. Second encore - Foolish Games was, as always, great. And then the last song, Angel Standing By, which is something I've always wanted to hear Jewel play live. That and Everything Breaks were the 2 songs which almost, almost, brought a tear to my eye :). So there you have it. I'm by no means sugarcoating this, I see enough concerts to be able to be objective about them... But Jewel last night was incredible. She definitely hasn't lost her touch. Her audience interaction was great and the songs were even better. Even Natalie, who doesn't even like Jewel that much, had to admit that it was fantastic. So who has a spare ticket for Amsterdam? I need to go :) Cheers, Tom. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 19:52:11 EST From: JeWeLsTaR386@aol.com Subject: [EDA] jewel eyes her eyes are green i belive...a green blue Love ya -Michelle I'd rather be disliked for who I am, Than liked for who I'm not-Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2002 02:10:50 +0100 From: "Tom Hall" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel's first setlist/"set" lists in general About the Hamburg setlist and Jewel's songs getting 'tired'... The Hamburg set was so much better than I expected. I knew these 3 European shows were 'showcases' for the new album. I assumed it'd be a full concert but there was a nagging thought that it'd just be album tracks. That would've really sucked. Jewel played 11 songs from the album and 11 other songs. That was pretty even! I don't think by any means that any of the songs are getting old. I won't bore you with more details as when my long review post finally gets through you'll see what I thought of the show, but of the songs that were mentioned: Who Will Save Your Soul - This song is growing and growing from tour to tour. This version expanded on the Spirit tour version with a killer ending. Very powerful and unexpected. This song gets better with age. And it got quite a few people on their feet :). Per la Gloria - Yes, there are other Latin songs to sing, but this is obviously a favourite of Jewel's. She's someone who's not afraid to mix things up a bit, and this had the audience stunned, silent in awe. Even if she played it on the last tour, it still didn't fail to impress. Chime Bells - This is one of Jewel's staple live songs. Again, it impresses people, shows off her range and the audience really get into it. Plus, she's changed it a lot. She did it acapella and there was more of a lilting lullaby feel to the verses. Again, she's changed it a bit. Stephenville - Hey, I requested that one! You wanna complain about it, complain to me :). Hehe... How is this song getting overplayed? She's performed it, what? Five times at the most? This is one of Jewel's best songs anyway. As for the 'Jewel should sing newer songs' thing - half the songs on the album are new! And The New Wild West is worth the ticket price alone :). The most impressive part was hearing Everything Breaks. That really impressed me. Also, the performance of YWMFM was the best I've heard. She sounded like she felt every word and, I keep using this word, it was downright seductive. As for the setlists and mixing them up, I'm pretty sure she'll be doing that. Here's some proof: 1. At the beginning of 'Hands' when everyone cheered she said she didn't realise everyone knew that one and that she almost wasn't going to play it. One example of Jewel thinking up a setlist. 2. At the beginning of Deep Water she forgot the chords, and asked her guitarist if she had to play a D next, so they've obviously practised that... And she said that the band knew it and were feeling left out cos they're not playing with her. So they've seemingly practised at least one more song than they played that night - probably at least five and most likely more. 3. They won't play 11 tracks off of This Way every night. She's probably just testing them out on this trip to see how the audience react. For example Everybody Needs Someone Sometime got a HUGE reaction - everyone stood up and started clapping... There was a bit of a line-dancing vibe :). I didn't really expect it to be that popular. And she's taking requests for the acoustic set - keep asking for Boy Needs a Bike people, we WILL see it return to the setlist one day, even if she has to fish it out of the trash... Don't doubt this year's tour. As someone who's seen a sneak preview, it's looking pretty good so far! And she was in full character - laughing, making some really good jokes, having fun with the band... Messing up the guitarist by delaying her singing in the intro to LMJLMA (which she sang the 'missing verse' to, btw)... The WWSYS jam, T-Bone was fun and the drummer was crazy... Even if, god forbid, the setlist stayed static for the whole tour (which it won't) Jewel's obviously having a LOT of fun up there, and that's more important than anything... YEY that the list is back! :) Has anyone seen the new shakira vid. "underneath your clothes" I think its called. Mannnn... I swear its almost exactly the same as Jewel's Standing Still. I was watching it and thought...man, she's a huge copy cat. It has the same theme about how she's spending too much time on tour rather than with her boyfriend. And thats what Jewel based her video on. Then at the end, it shows her with like a guy figure.. like a shadow I think (i didn't see the whole video). And at the end of Jewels video, Ty comes out. I just think it was a huge copy of it, and I was really upset. But I don't want to make a big deal out of it. Anyway, I recently saw the movie Shrek. And if anyone noticed the part where the princess, (I forgot her name) came out of the cave where they spent the night after shrek rescued her. She was singing, (humming) and then came upon a tree where there was a little blue bird. She sang something, and the bird would sing the same exact thing, then she sang something else but higher this time. (higher, not louder). And the bird would do the same thing. Till she went soooooooo high, that the bird tired to do it, and blew up, lol!!! It was funny! Anyway... I think that was kind of/ could be considered a tribute to Jewel 'cause ya know of WWSYS where she does one thing and Doug? (the guitar player from the spirit tour) tries to do what Jewel does on guitar. Jewel always beats out the guitar, so I thought it was kinda like that! :) Anyway...enough from me. I think we should realize that Jewel is in the music business. To be successful, you cannot release a CD and then tour to promote that CD and not sing the songs on that CD over and over again. It wouldn't make sense to sing obscure songs. As much as we EDAs would like Jewel to cater to us all the time, I think her goal is to gain as many fans as possible and sell records. We should be ecstatic for the few unreleased numbers she does every once in a while. Making money is not a bad, evil thing. This is just my personal opinion, but I believe that Jewel sings for herself first, not for us. She might sing because it makes her happy that she touches people, or she might sing because it makes her millions. It doesn't matter...We are her fans, she is not ours. I know I'm going off on a tangent, but I wanted to mention something else as well. I don't believe in the term "sellout." I'm all for Jewel, or Tori, or Sarah, or Dido, or whoever, mixing and remixing the heck out of their singles if that is what THEY WANT. It's their music, they should be able to do whatever they want to it. It's ok if some people don't like it, but they wouldn't do it unless they felt it would be beneficial to themselves. People don't do things for no reason...they do things for themselves, and that's perfectly ok. Jewel may love singing to the fans, but it's her passion for touching people that drives her, she doesn't sing because it makes us feel great, that's just a bonus. She sings cause it makes HER feel great. (: That's all...how does everyone else feel about this? - - Guillaume ps...those poor Sarah Mac and Dido fans probably don't even get as much "new" material as we do! ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #54 **************************
