HOLLY MIRANDA Hey guys and gals, Holly Miranda is a new singer/songwriter on the scene and NY's Village Voice called her "a fine young singer-songwriter who will draw many a comparison to Ani and Jewel." Just watched her appearance on 'TV Total', which is kind of a comedy show. No live performance though. Ok, so Jewel was on for a few minutes. Which is good, because this show has the highest ratings in it's timeslot. The host (Stefan Raab) did a small interview with her, nothing serious. Her swiss ancestors, her boy friend and squeezed bull balls :-) Don't ask for details. In the introduction he messed up facts, saying she grew up in Canada :-) They did sing a swiss song. And Jewel really managed to impress him. She sang along with him just listening to his lyrics/melody. Very impressive I must admit. They showed a short clip from SS, then sang a Garth Brooks song together which they both didn't know the lyrics of :-) And advertised 'This Way', which will be out next monday in germany. Summary: She show her great talent. It was a pretty relaxed appearance. And I think she managed to sell a few more CDs next week (though I doubt she will reach the Top 50). While EDA list email is going through, we ARE having some problems with behind-the-scenes email at smoe.org today, and it may or may not be related to some overall "internet problems" that have surfaced today. Basically, email sitting and waiting for people with smoe.org email addresses (like my mikec@smoe.org email address) is not working well. What this means is, is that any email you may have sent to jewel@smoe.org since late last night that has NOT yet appeared on the list likely "bounced" for approval for one of a variety of reasons. Since those emails get sent to my mikec@smoe.org email address and that address is not fully working right now, I am presently unable to retrieve your "bounced" post and send it on. So, if any of your sent email to jewel@smoe.org has yet to appear, just sit tight and as soon as this problem clears up, I'll be able to get to it. Who else would you like to work with? LANCE: "We;ve always wanted to do something with Shania Twain. I think that would be different -that a country singer and a pop group. We've also always loved Jewel and Janet Jackson and, oh gosh, Lauryn Hill." Sorry if this was already brought up before, but I thought it was cool that the like Jewel. (Hey they have good taste in music!) I know some people would rather die than hear Jewel do a duet with Jewel.....but I still thought it was intersting. Oh yeah......My sister also has that Nsync computer phone thing and in one of the trivia games Jewel was one of the choices for an answer to a quetion....I can't remember what question she said though! Well EDAs take care It is good to have you all back! Happy Valentine's day! Beth ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 19:18:16 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] band sets Hey Personally I agree with Sean - I think that Jewel's "band" should definitely be well-versed in her music enough to be able to play different songs in the band setlist. I mean I think a "setlist" is somewhat required for the band sets each night.. just cause on each song the guitarists and jewel play different guitars that are tuned differently, and the sound engineer probably does different things on each song... eg - on some songs jewel plays lead guitar, on some she plays more backup.. so the volume levels are different. Also there's certain lighting cues that are planned for each song... So if nobody knows anything and Jewel just goes onstage and randomly decides what to play... then that can be kind of difficult for everybody else working with Jewel to make the concert look/sound good... and tight. I mean there's a difference between the loose relaxed tone Jewel usually takes, and just being purely unprofessional. However - there's nothing stopping Jewel WRITING the band sets before each show. I mean she now has two albums that have significant amounts of band material from which she can work... plus a slew of unreleased material that can work with a band. I'm sure this tour will be a lot more varied than the last one. And I hope she switches the order too. So far all the shows she's done with the band (the shorter promo shows in the states last year) have had extremely different sets in terms of sond order. I mean the whole point of This Way is that each song is different from the last, so it's not like there's any "logical" order... the songs can just be played however they want. Also she can throw in Life Uncommon one night and Down So Long another and Do You another.. and whatever... However there will obviously be a few things that stick. I think she'll continue playing the new wild west and who will save your soul at the end. I kind of pictured that in my mind anyway. We'll see. Only time will tell. I'm certainly very curious to see how the setlists develop. Anyway, he's a really good photographer and is going to give me some pictures! Sorry, just a little cool coincedence I thought. For a little more Jewel-oriented talk. I just saw the DirectTV taping of the Humphrey's show and I have decided that the second night was definately better than the first! I was at the first night, but couldn't make the second and now I feel a little saddened that I wasn't able to go to the second night. The band chemistry was better AND she sang Rosy and Mick on the second night. Also, her the guitars worked! So yeah, Happy Valentine's Day y'all! Me and my friend Natalie who came with me went round the back of the hall to see what was going on because there were video cameras and lights and stuff (they were filming a German soap or something). Anyway, there we were standing there and out of a door comes a blond and two guys. I did a double take but then thought 'nah, can't be'. Well upon looking at the mystery blond pulling out in a car, it was definitely Jewel :). Hey she was wearing a hat, I couldn't see her properly! So we did the logical thing and waited til she came back... Which she did. And I asked for her autograph, told her how much I love her music (she said 'thankyou, i appreciate it') and asked her to play Boy Needs A Bike. She said she would if she could remember it. I said I'd help her out - she didn't play it in the end though. She couldn't stay for long, this guy was pushing her inside, but she was very gracious and nice. She's sweet, I was so nervous that she'd be a bitch like people have said on the list but she was great. She's so cute as well, she's small and looks really fragile, while on stage she looks so strong :). OK, so we got inside and sat down, and who else should sit in front of us but two crazy Dutch fans who travelled up with the Dutch fan of all Dutch fans, Michiel. I can't remember their names but we talked to them and they were pretty funny. Kept us entertained before the show started. And the show was awesome. The setlist was, as has already been said, not perfect. But, taking into account that this tour is really to showcase her new album to the European market, it was OK. No matter what the setlist was though, Jewel was on top form tonight - perfect voice, a lot of fun banter with the crowd and she was so appreciative that we turned up :). THE BAND. The band were actually great! Like many other EDAs, I've had a bit of a problem getting used to Jewel with a band, especially now there's no Steve, but they really did seem like they'd rehearsed a lot, and they were finally comfortable with each other. So don't worry people, the band's OK. The sound for the new album tracks, as well as Hands, was pretty similar to what it sounds like on the album. The instrumentation is pretty much unchanged, but it does seem a bit more raw. She did play Break Me with the band though, which I'd have loved to have seen acoustic. That said, the acoustic sets were the best part of the night. She took requests - she did Stephenville for me (yay). In Deep Water she could barely remember the chords and forgot the 'seeping out like cheap gin...' line. I shouted out 'seeping out' but she still couldn't remember the rest of it :). You Were Meant For Me was the most incredible version I've ever heard of it. She was so seductive :). Everything Breaks was the biggest surprise of the night, and that was possibly my favourite song of the night. Great, powerful version. Jewel's really working on that wail! She's so good at it now. It was used in a few songs, notably Life Uncommon (another great version, with some great wailing), Love Me Just Leave Me Alone of course. And Who Will Save Your Soul. Wow. This gets better and better with every tour. It started off with a pretty similar sound to the Spirit tour version, and she did the little guitar copying thing... But then she let out this long, powerful scream with the band pumping behind it, it was possibly the best moment of the show, she really let rip :). The New Wild West. Another incredible performance. This song has the markings of a true Jewel classic, not least because it sounds equally as good whether it's acoustic or with the band. On Conan she was brilliant acoustic, but with the band this song has so much energy and, well, I had to get up and dance a bit... Great, great song, by far my favourite on the new album. The first encore really sent shivers down my spine. Per la gloria d'adorarvi just shocked everyone, including me - even though I'd heard it before I still didn't expect it. And then Chime Bells. If you're bored of it, be prepared for the a capella version. She's changed the melody a bit... At first I thought she was off-key but nooooo, this version is, if anything, even better than the old one. And the yodeling is always fun. Second encore - Foolish Games was, as always, great. And then the last song, Angel Standing By, which is something I've always wanted to hear Jewel play live. That and Everything Breaks were the 2 songs which almost, almost, brought a tear to my eye :). So there you have it. I'm by no means sugarcoating this, I see enough concerts to be able to be objective about them... But Jewel last night was incredible. She definitely hasn't lost her touch. Her audience interaction was great and the songs were even better. Even Natalie, who doesn't even like Jewel that much, had to admit that it was fantastic. So who has a spare ticket for Amsterdam? I need to go :) Cheers, Tom. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #53 **************************
