Subject: RE: [EDA] Songs ready for retirement > Honestly, how can Jewel not be bored to tears of singing Per la Gloria and > > Who Will Save Your Soul? - -------------------------------------- I don't think she's sung Per la Gloria much at all. Especially not on the Spirit tour. And WWSYS is her token song....I don't think that's ever going to leave the set list...that's probably one reason why she's changed it up so much from 7 years ago...so it *wouldn't* get too boring for her. > Her concert could have a lot more variety in it than the set list for > Germany > indicated; i'd love it if she sang some songs none of us had ever heard > instead of just everything off of her CD and some other well known ones > like Stephenville and Chime Bells. Two years off and no new songs? > Many of the songs she played from the This Way CD *are* new. Remember, the non-EDA's (which is the entire world minus 1000 or so people) most likely hadn't heard most of the songs off her new album before it came out. For us they may seem older, since some are, but others don't realize this. I think her setlist was totally predictable, but not all that bad. Could have been alot worse. Since she has a new CD out now, it's only natural to focus on the songs from that, and play most of them, as most other bands do. (not all, *most*) I think it's good she's till including songs like Chime Bells, and Angel Standing By. Even WWSYS, and YWMFM. I'd much rather here those over again than some of the newer songs. And I think the fact she played 21 songs is totally amazing. That's a really long set list by today's standards. However, my guess would be that the length will be trimmed to maybe 16-18 songs/night by the time she gets to the US leg of the tour. If she keeps doing 21 songs a night, it's really going to take it's toll on her. They could just be playing alot now for practice to see which ones they'd like to focus more on for the remainder of the tour. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 17:41:20 +0100 From: "Seyfhor" Subject: Re: [EDA] Per la gloria d'adorarvi Hi, actually I don't realy know it, but I think it is a part of an opera. It just didn't get to you for whatever reason, as it WAS published last night at 1:05am ET. It is not an uncommon occurance, a few people do not get a copy of a particular digest from time to time. It usually is a problem on your end, not smoe.org's end. You can read digest #50 online at http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/archives/ and scroll down until you find it. You can also order a new copy via email. If desired that way, just head to my EDA page at www.quackquack.net/jewel and then hit the Majordomo School page, which will instruct you on how to email-order back digests. I'm glad she doesn't play a ton of new songs (even though I haven't been to a concert yet heh) yeah, I like hearing something fresh once in a while, but I want to hear things I *know*, things I love already... take Weezer for instance, when I went to their concert in September, I was actually rather bored... they played mostly brand new songs, songs that they had just written (after their newest album), the rest of the songs they played were mostly from the new album... I was disappointed because I was really looking forward to hearing stuff from their other two albums, and for half of their setlist to be stuff I'd never even heard before....well it went from exciting to hear a new song at first, to just plain boring... I love Weezer, but when they came back this way again (today, actually) I chose not to go because I was so bored last time.... if Jewel did the same thing everytime I saw her, I'd pass up going to see her as well! ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 15:03:43 EST From: SeanHooks@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel's first setlist/"set" lists in general I wasn't all that unpleased with the setlist she did in Germany. It had a lot of the new album, as expected. But it also presented her other album songs, and I was very pleased with her acoustic set, which included Deep Water(the band version of this is really bad) as well as Everything Breaks and Stephenville(two B-sides, if you will). Maggie wrote that she was unhappy that more new songs weren't played and that she's tired of hearing Who Will Save Your Soul and Per la Gloria. First of all, Per la Gloria is hardly what I would call "played-out," and 99% of the people seeing her at a show are hearing her do it for the first or second time I'd bet. And Who Will Save Your Soul is a good song, there's lots of other songs I'd remove before this one. As for more new songs being played, or more unreleased songs, remember that it's the first night of the tour. The first night of a tour is where an artist or band should lay down a basic setlist. Some songs will stay throughout the tour, others will change. It's these variant songs that the hardcore fans like ourselves should be looking forward to. And we can't judge how much she's going to fiddle with the setlist until she plays multiple shows. Cymbie then wrote that change is unlikely to occur in the band portion of the set because improvisation is more likely solo acoustic. This is somewhat true but also a large misconception. Yes, I do think as the tour progresses Jewel will have more liberty to be truly free and go to almost any song in her repetoire during the solo acoustic portion. But to say that bands have to play the same setlist all the time is nonsense. Ever hear of the Grateful Dead, Phish, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, The E Street Band, etc?? And before you say that those are bands who were together for years, a lot of solo artists tour with bands and switch up the material consistently. Jewel-esque artists who I've personally see do this include: Tori Amos, Dar Williams and Elliott Smith. All are solo artists without long-time bands whose bands have taken the time to learn many of the artists' songs over the course of a tour. If a band is with an artist for a whole tour, they're an awful sad and untalented band if they can't learn more than the same 10 or 15 songs. These are professional musicians, playing every night just about. Don't cut them so much slack, you should expect song variance in the band portion of Jewel's shows as well.
