Today's Subjects: ----------------- [EDA] OK, let's start this EDA list back up! :-) ALL please read. [Mike C] [EDA] FWD: JeweLink: Next Stop Germany!/This Week's TV Schedule [Mike Co] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2002 21:20:05 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: [EDA] OK, let's start this EDA list back up! :-) ALL please read. Check.......check check check testing testing 1 2 3 4 testing testing 1 2 3 4 check check check... OK....seems to be working alright :-) Sorry for the delay in starting this list back up folks. Long story and I shant bore you with it. However, I do have to address some things before I throw the switch. First of all, I apologize to the new list members who have joined this list and/or the digest version since the temporary shutdown came into effect three weeks ago. Some of you I did not write explaining why you would not be getting any posts for a while. I DID write some of you, but not all. Again, I apologize. Secondly, I also apologize to the approximately three-fourths of you who wrote me asking "what's up?" that I also did not reply to. I was preoccupied. Thirdly, when I shut down this list three weeks ago I said it would last about a week while I reviewed the problems that had plagued it the last few months or so. It of course lasted three weeks....and, to be perfectly honest with all of you, due to circumstances beyond my control, I did not review one darned thing. I did however discuss some list related topics/issues with some list members via AOL Instant Messaging and on the phone, but other than that I pretty much left the list issues on the back burner. So, not wanting to NOW start reviewing things and further delay a restart, I am going to go by memory to address some of the things that, as I said, plagued this list recently, some major, some minor...but they all add up. Most importantly....the bickering, flaming and downright rudeness, of which I myself had been somewhat guilty of last November. (which, by the way, was one reason I hesitated to step in earlier). Long gone EDA of yesteryear, Chas Watkins (remember him?) perhaps said it best in his signature for most of his posts: > Share publicly, flame privately, > " 'Cause anyone can start a conflict > it's harder yet to disregard it ". There's been way, way, way too much flaming and/or disagreements/bickering going on, especially of the NJC (No Jewel Content) variety. It really does have to stop. So, let's all make it stop. :-) It's one thing to have differing opinions about the topic of this list (Jewel), but when it has nothing to do with her or evolves into having nothing to do with her and is sometimes heated or mildly heated, it's pretty much a thorn in everyones' side. We all have to have the presence of mind to be aware of what we are about to post to roughly 900 people. Do they really need to read this? Usually the answer is "no". Am I taking this post I am replying to the wrong way? Often the answer is "yes". Should I really email this privately to the person(s) involved rather than the whole list? Very often the answer is "yes". A lot of it has to do with the misuse of the "NJC" on this list, and it is partially my fault for not addressing this issue sooner. Basically, any post that you send to this list that has nothing to do with Jewel should have a subject that leads off with the three letters NJC. It acts as a clue to the other readers of this list in order to help them judge if they want to read it or not. However, use of the "NJC" in your subject is NOT an open license to post anything you want. It really should be, as we list owners say, "in the ballpark". Stealing from the "welcome to" for the Joni Mitchell list here at smoe.org, it addresses NJC this way: >) Post from within the ballpark: One of the first lines of this message >explains that the JMDL is an unmoderated discussion of anything and >everything related to the life, art, music, and times of Joni Mitchell". We >don't always talk about Joni but we try to "stay in the ballpark". You >will find that many members tolerate and enjoy the NJC on the list while >others cringe at it. If the list strays to far from Joni for your tastes, >be proactive and introduce a new topic to bring us back home. Same applies to our list, just replace "JMDL" and "Joni Mitchell" above with "Jewel". Still, *ALL* NJC is not acceptable. "In the ballpark" pretty much means music or other musical artists that likely will or just might appeal to the Jewel fans here. Also, due to the history of this list in regards to our many "EDA gatherings" (get-togethers) either at Jewel events or just for the heck of it, "in the ballpark" includes any such events, the planning of such, the reviews of such etc etc. It's natural for some fans of any musical artist who happen to subscribe to the same online forum to want to meet up from time to time, and this list is certainly no exception and quite likely has had some of the largest such organized "online community" gatherings the last six years. "Not acceptable" NJC of course is a very wide category...do NOT post asking if anyone else saw "ER" last night or "Lord Of The Rings" recently. Do NOT post asking for a recipe for strawberry-rhubarb pie. Do NOT post asking for help with your trig homework. Do NOT post if anyone wants to read your term paper. There are other forums for such things. Also, please do not post too many NJC items over a short period of time (i.e. a day). If there's three other "in the ballpark" artists you want to post about, mention them all in one NJC post, do not send three posts. It just wrankles some list members and rightfully so. Other not-acceptable NJC is an on-list reply to something NJC someone else posted that you or others might take objection to. Not to pick on anyone specifically, but one recent case that comes to mind is when a list member had in their post some information about doing "donuts" while driving in a snowy parking lot. More than a few people replied ON-LIST and took objection to the practice. Whether the "parking lot donuts" were the right or wrong thing to do is not the list issue'here, the fact that there were on-list replies debating this practice IS the issue. They just do not belong here. We need them to stop. Also, personal attacks about someone's opinions, NJC or not, are not tolerable either. It's one thing to disagree, but to attack...that's bad and cannot be tolerated. There's more to cover and I am running out of time before I have to hit the sack for the evening, so, I am going to "steal" some more text from the "welcome to" for the Joni Mitchell list. PLEASE read it all....some of it addresses items that were recent problems on the EDA/Jewel list to which we all subscribe. Please abide by it. Please follow it. If we all act nice and follow the list guidelines, this will be a much nicer place to be. The other text from the Joni list is below. (edited for the Jewel list) Sincerely, Mike Connell - EDA list owner aka ducksoup@quackquack.net you can IM me at duckofprey on AOL or AIM. >LIST ETIQUETTE: >As mentioned, this list is unmoderated - that is, no one approves or denies >each post, they all make it through unrestricted to the list. Because of >this, a few rules of etiquette should be taken into consideration. > >1) ALWAYS USE "NJC" IF APPLICABLE!!!!!: This is THE most important thing >you will hear about on this list. What is NJC? It stands for "No Jeweli >Content" and should be used as the first three characters of the subject >line of any post you send to the list that contains no Jewel >content. For example, if you are responding to a thread on the virtues of >Yanni , the subject line of your post should be labeled something like "NJC >- Yanni is the greatest." This allows those that aren't interested in this >topic to skip it or even delete it without reading it. > >2) Watch your subject lines: When posting, make sure to check your subject >line and insure that it is relevant to the post itself. We often see >Re: jewel-digest V7 #41" as the subject line or some other vague or >outdated description. There are those on the list who choose to read only >those messages whose subject lines appeal to them. If your subject line >has nothing to do with your post - you may be causing a lot of unneeded >frustration with the other members. > >3) "Quote" effectively and efficiently: Quoting is important and >encouraged. If you are responding to a message from another member, it is >essential that you quote the relevant part of the message so that the rest >of the members can follow the thread. As you might expect, there are a >number of threads at any given point and, without proper quoting, it is >difficult if not impossible to follow the line of thinking. > >With quoting comes another responsibility, however, and that is to quote >ONLY the relevant portion of the message you are responding to. Often, we >have seen entire digests copied back to the list when the person could have >simply quoted a few lines. Nothing frustrates list members more than >having to wade through lines and lines of irrelevant quoted text. > >4) Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance: To debate is divine, to personally >insult really sucks. We love debate! We love a good conversation - a good >discussion of the issues. We do so with respect for all involved. There >are people from many countries and many cultures on this list. There are >also those who are diplomatic, and those who aren't. There are tall ones >and short ones and ... well, you get the idea. We are a very diverse bunch. > >In a nutshell, respect another's opinion and they will respect yours. It >is not acceptable to personally insult someone publicly on the list. If >you feel the need to do so, go listen to the "Pieces Of You" album or >JewelStock and calm down. If that doesn't work, take your differences off >the list! > >It is quite simple in an email forum to read (or write) a post that invokes >a quick, angry response that is later regretted. Email is a unique forum - >one in which the intended context or meaning of a post is easily >misinterpreted. You may be trying to make a joke and on the other end it >is read as being serious. > >To aide others in understanding your true meaning, you may consider using >"emoticons." For example, looked at sideways: > >:-) is a smile >;-) is a wink >:-( is a frown and >:-D is a laugh. > >There are many others that you will discover along the way. If you are new >to email discussion lists, this may seem silly at this point. But, I >guarantee that you will see the value of them once you've been around awhile! > >5) Don't throw "crumbs": People sometimes tend to use the discussion list >as a chat room. By this, we mean that they will post a simple "Me too!" or >"I agree" in response to someone else's post - and that's it. There are >cases where this is appropriate and effective, but mostly it just takes up >space and irritates those who oppose NJC. > >6) Post from within the ballpark: One of the first lines of this message >explains that the Jewel list is an unmoderated discussion of anything and >everything related to the life, art, music, and times of Jewel. We >don't always talk about Jewel but we try to "stay in the ballpark". You >will find that many members tolerate and enjoy the NJC on the list while >others cringe at it. If the list strays to far from Jewel for your tastes, >be proactive and introduce a new topic to bring us back home. Note from Mike - please pay special attention to this next one. >7) Please do not post another's private email to the list without their >permission. If you feel you are being privately harassed, intimidated, or >abused by another list member as a result of a debate or discussion that >began on the list, I suggest any or all of these steps: > >- Ask them to stop. >- Ignore them. >- Delete their mail unread and/or filter their mail automatically into the >trash. > >At this point, if you feel the harassment, intimidation, or abuse persists >and needs to be further addressed: > >- Contact their ISP and ask for help in stopping the mail. >- Email me a representation of the nature of the problem (copies of >messages, chronology, etc...) and *CC the offender*. Please do not expect >me to get involved and mediate the case. Rather, based on my knowledge of >this person's history on the list, I'll make a decision as to their >continued status as a member. Another note from Mike - I will try, but cannot promise I can or will make a *prompt* decision as to the continued status of a person as a list member in cases as described in the above paragraph, however I will now state that I do fully intend to have less patience with "problem" list members and/or habitual/chronic offenders of list guidelines, policies and/or netiquette. It's not that I will be "keeping score" (someone suggested to me a "3 strikes and you are out" policy), I do not have the time nor energy for that, but I will deal with such transgressions. >Hopefully, this will end all but the most severe cases of abuse. In those >rare cases, we will need to personally discuss procedures. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2002 21:22:35 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: [EDA] FWD: JeweLink: Next Stop Germany!/This Week's TV Schedule Here is the latest issue of JeweLink, directly from Jewel's "people", if you want to get a copy of this directly as each issue comes out, you can sub- scribe to it by sending a blank email to join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com ******************************************** JeweLink - The Official Jewel Communications List ******************************************** In this edition of JeweLink: ***NEXT STOP GERMANY! ***JEWEL ON TV: THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE ******************************************** ***NEXT STOP GERMANY!
