I'm looking for info and help... as some EDAs know, I am friend and manager to a singer-songwriter, Allison Crowe. If, like me, you're a fan of Jewel, Pearl Jam, Tara MacLean, Janis Joplin, Sarah McLachlan, Beth Orton, Counting Crows, Tori Amos, Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco and other artists with integrity, you may enjoy Allison's music. She and her trio are already selling out 200-300 seat clubs and theatres in our corner of the world (Canada's PNW) and I'm now planning our first cross country tours. Our goal is to trek across Canada, and dip into some nearby U.S. cities (such as Seattle, Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, NYC etc.) on two different tours in 2002. The first trip is being planned for this April. Rather than just plugging into the traditional bar/club circuit, I'd like to also find, whenever and wherever possible, cool venues where people love music. For example, in Toronto, I'm aiming to book the Church of the Holy Trinity, where the Cowboy Junkies recorded their great album, The Trinity Sessions. And in other towns, I'm looking at community theatres, recital halls, and other alternative type venues. If you know of any places - anywhere in Canada - where you go to hear your favourite musicians, I'd welcome hearing about these places. Great clubs, too, are worth noting. And if you're in the U.S., initially I'm looking for performance spaces in those cities close to the Canada/U.S. border (eg. Boston is not hard for us to reach, and I've heard about Club Passim and the Kendall Cafe there...); any and all leads and info is appreciated! you can email me privately at management@allisoncrowe.com (and one day, I'll be searching the entire continent and globe for venues!) thank you, cheers, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 08:50:20 -0500 From: "cymbaline" Subject: Re: [EDA] njc Poetry.com - ----- Original Message ----- From: Christy To: Sent: Monday, January 21, 2002 5:46 AM Subject: [EDA] njc Poetry.com > They picked one of my poems to be in their book too. > I did buy it (for $50+), and it is kind of neat to > have, but seeing everyone else that is in there > definately takes away from the specialness... There is a book you can guy called "the Poets Market" which has a listing of a TON of publishers who will publish your poem(s). Such as literary magazines, or magazines that have a poetry section even. People like this will be honest and choose the poems/writings they think are the best to have published. You won't get scammed. The book also has an index of publications in your region.... such as for me, "the University of Florida Literary Journal" or something like that. Check out Barnes and Nobles magazine/periodical wall... i think its ion the "Hobby" category, (or maybe they do in fact have a "literary" category) They have small literary "magazines" (which are in fact kind of like small books.... card stock cover and all... they're quite a few bucks though) that you might want to send something to. i haven't written hardly any poetry since 1998... which was my peak. i wrote my best stuff that year.... i haven't really been inspired to write since.... :( anyways, this angel is off to work. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 02:22:51 +1100 (EST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Sean=20Hilton?= Subject: Re: [EDA] last call/poems turned into songs erm... hehe the rain set early in tonight the sullen wind was soon awake it tore the elm tops down for spite and did it's worst to vex the lake i listened with heart, fit to break when glided in porphyria straight ;) robert browning's 'porphyria's lover' was a great poem turned into a song - check it out! ;) ===== "it is the year of death wielding his instruments stealth, sovereign reaper touching us with ease" Opeth - Blackwater Park http://my.yahoo.com.au - My Yahoo! - - It's My Yahoo! Maybe...some places don't publish you if you don't buy the anthology and how would you know because you don't buy it...they are a money-making business; Poetry.com, Iliad Press, Famous Poets.com, etc. etc. they don't care AT ALL about poetry. Rule of thumb; you should never have to pay someone else to publish your work especially not the outrageous prices they charge. Now I can understand a university Literary journal which are reputable but...don't fall for these...everyone is published. -eric "why do I like you? 'Cause I do why do I like you? To start with, we are obviously biased in some form. I'm sure there is a Mariah Carey list somewhere screaming injustice about Mariah not being there. I, in my opinion, feel that she should be there, and for many reasons which I'll refer to later. What makes someone a top 100 artist? I will be honest, I didn't see the entire show because of time constraints as you can imagine. I didn't necessarily disagree with what I did see though. But the artists I did see were not all top album sales women. So if that's not a prerequisite then what is? Possibly there impact to music. Did they make people stop and think? Did they influence an entire genre of musicians down the road? If so, wouldn't that make Debbie Gibson a top 100 women artist for being the first "really" pop female vocalist and being the first of future spawned acts like Britney, Christina and Mandy Moore and others like that? If that's not it, then is it because they are revolutionary and went against the grain of contemporary music and rebelled in there music? Alanis Morrisette received a lot of acclaim for the ex-boyfriend tirade in "You Outta Know," but before that she was a Debbie Gibson act anyway in Canada and used to be an actress on "You can't do that on television." I love Alanis, don't get me wrong. I'm just citing one example that was brought up. If that's also a standard then Meredith Brooks would be right there singing "Bitch" right? Or what about that group that sang about how they wished there boyfriend was a beer? I'm not kidding, that's an actual song "I wish you were a beer." If "That's" not it, then is it musical composure. Being a music writer/producer would be pretty amazing and be able to juggle both. But there are artist's that did and were left out of that too. Since it was an example before then again, Mariah Carey, who wrote her own songs and co-produced a few also. I sight this example because Jewel would be too easy. The problem here is, I could go on and on about what "seems" to be the reasons why but after reading the reasons I still don't see where Jewel "Doesn't" fit (I apologize for the million " marks). She seemingly fits every category from above so the only question I have is "What do they have that Jewel doesn't." Without getting in to a bias opinion and using only factual information, Jewel has sold more albums than many of those artists, has been revolutionary by introducing a folk sound to a time when grunge was the only thing going and thrived on it. Has proven to be a consistent artist, although not matching her first success, has still maintained a mainstream audience as well as an underground audience also. Being a top-selling poet must mean that her lyrical content has to be somewhat artistic to say the least, right? So she's obviously a talented songwriter as well. How many other artist's on that list can say they have a top-selling poetry book? So where does Jewel fit? Again, this is my opinion but I truly feel like she's accomplished so much in such a short span of time that to not have her on "any" list of top influential women of our time makes me question the validity of that list. Women like Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Melissa Etheridge are prime examples of well-respected artists to me and I think that Jewel is a younger version of what's to come to represent these fine artists. I'm not even that big of a Madonna fan, but I wouldn't argue that she hasn't made a major impact as an artist also. I'm not saying "I'm a Jewel fan and she should be on that list," I'm saying "I'm a music fan and Jewel should be on that list." Thanks for reading this long entry. Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. day and I hope that everyone takes a second to recognize his contributions as well. Because without people like him we might have been without a lot of those women on that list that we speak of. It's always nice to see Jewel going solo acoustic, especially after a few months of SS performances. I must say I do agree with Kelly on one thing, Jewel's voice can sometimes haunt you, and whenever she does Break Me acoustic, it haunts me. I guess its just the way all you can hear is her voice and her guitar. And then all you see is her, lost in the song, lost in her own lyrics. Knowing she's feeling every word she's singing. Anyways, back to reality... One question though, does anyone know why they kept referring to Break Me as one of her new hits? She hasn't released it, and as far as we know she isn't going to, This Way is next. Just wondering.
