His fame is absolutely inexplicable and undeserved. That said, I was happy to see her on, happy to see her do "Do You Want To Play," happy when they came out and chatted and seemed like old friends and Jewel was very funny and warm and sarcastic. She was correct in her criticism of most talk shows in that they interview actors but not musicians. So I thought we'd actually get 30 minutes of Jewel in a legitimate interview. Alas, Mr. Daly isn't exactly Charlie Rose. He isn't even John Stewart or Lauren Hutton or Tom Snyder. He dwelled on the sex thing and the cow castrating for like the ENTIRE INTERVIEW. Asking her the weirdest place she had sex as a first question was fine, funny and spontaneous. But then he tried to milk it for another 15 minutes. He showed his lack of polish and MTV roots in his obsessing over vaguely sexual personal details rather than asking Jewel anything truly interesting about her art. All in all though I guess it was better than seeing her play a song and then not talk at all. "Do You Want To Play" was decent, it's a decent song. The backup singer BLOWS. Are back-up singers ever good?? I'm trying to think of one single artist or band who has ever benefited from the presence of a back-up singer or singers. I can't think of one. And duets don't count. I mean annoying (usually female) background singers. I'm sure there's a couple, maybe the Stones are an old John Mellencamp song or something, but most back-up singers I've heard are just pointless and annoying as hell. But again, it was nice to see this song live. And I agree with most people who are saying that this version of "Standing Still" was better than most of its live airings. So, all in all it could've been better given what it was, but it's still nice to see something lengthy about Jewel. But if you take out the two songs and the overdone sex/castrating cow bit, there was maybe all of about 2 minutes of legitimate question and answers. And she didn't come across whorish at all, to whoever said that. She has sex with her boyfriends, probably pretty often, she's 27 years old, what do you expect? And she was frank in discussing it but in a fun way. The one whorish thing she did was the shameless self-promotion at the end, asking people to call in to Z100 and request her song. This is more naivete than whoring, of course, it's just sad how clueless she is about that kinda stuff. Saying that makes her look like a total puppet to the record company. Respectable artists of her ilk just would NOT even think of doing that. Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, people like this, would be urging viewers to support a worthwhile cause, or asking them to listen to ALTERNATIVE radio like 90.7 WFUV in New York. Has Jewel forgotten her folk roots this quickly? I didn't want to make this a negative post, but that comment at the end just irked me. Stop trying to be a pop star. Jewel incorrectly groups herself in with the other crap on Z100 by begging to be played on it. You're already a multi-millionaire, be an artist instead of a commercial for a minute. Later, Sean Hooks bTo me the great hope is that now these little eight millimeter video recorders and stuff are coming around, some just people who normally wouldnbt make movies are gonna be making them and yab know suddenly, one day some little fat girl in Ohio is gonna be the new Mozart yab know and make uh, a beautiful film with her little fatherbs camera-corder and for once the so-called professionalism about movies will be destroyed forever yab know and itbll really be an art form.b - -Francis Ford Coppola ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 12:23:10 -0800 (PST) From: Michiel van Gorkum Subject: [EDA] standing still can be requested on dutch the BOX TV hello Jewelfans, Jewel is featured with Standing still on the MUSIC TV broadcaster the BOX...when you dial a phonenumber and a clipcode you can get a request that they play jewel4s newest song. that is good news in advance of the release of the new single isn4t it! And i have definitly caught myself thinking that Jewel can do no wrong, she is god etc. But i know that is not reality. What really got me hooked in the first place was the sarcastic bitch side of jewel. Smug...yes. But how many celebrities aren't?? Maybe i don't know what jewel is "really" like, but how many people can say that they do, on this list anyway. You know she joked on last call about the tin soldiers, call the stations!! ha ha. But i do, at least i do online because i'm in BFE and i have no radio stations. But i bug my friends to call in, i make them listen. I look at it this way. I'm so into everything jewel does because i want to see her succeed. She did some much for me many years back, and i'm grateful. But hasn't she succeeded? She's sold millions of CDs, she can't be called a one hit wonder becuase there were three off of POY alone, but as of now i would call her a one record wonder. The longer she is on the music scene, the more people she can reach. Maybe in two years someone will feel the way i did so many years ago, and maybe that person will find something in jewels music. I'm just saying, i know that Jewel is human. I know that she is not perfect. But i will support ANYTHING (within reason) that she does because she did so much for me. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #33 **************************
