A as in brilliant. Pieces of You- A's WWYSY, POY, Little Sister, Foolish Games, Near You Always, Painters, Morning Song, Adrian, YWMFM, Don't, Angel Standing By, Amen Spirit- A's Fat Boy, Enter From the East This Way- A'S Grey Matter 12 songs, then 2, then 1. i assume by now that most of you will see i agree with a lot of what sean hooks has to say and derrick k, and disagree with fred and sandy's recent posts. no one is right or wrong, and i certainly understand that different people have different opinions, but the artist i personally fell in love with is long gone. there have been a lot of posts about "growth" and "we don't need any more solo acoustic" and she is changing direction. i disagree with all of them. the songs and videos from the last 2 albums are formulaic, overproduced, glossy stock. sure, there are moments of brilliance, but the emotion is simply gone for me. i fell in love with the girl , her guitar, and her voice. the guitar and the voice are now being droned out by stock session musicians, hi tech machines and glossy production tricks. the girl is blurred by overdramatic blue lit matthew rolston videos and corporate pandering. a lot of people will disagree with me. that's fine, i hope alot of you are enjoying the current direction of her music. i don't feel angry, just disappointed, like when you're dating someone and there is a year of pure bliss and then they subtley change. i'm sure most of us have been there before. when i put on pieces of you, it is like led zepplin 1 or 4, or bob dylan's blood on the tracks, in that just about every song is a masterpiece. that's what seperates the legends from the flashes. songs like painters, amen, or angel standing by can bring me to tears. it just isn't there with the newer stuff. maybe some day again it will be. i was fortunate enough to see her 5 times, and i will always have those memories (like hospitality point, san diego 9/20/97 best show ever). some people will tell me to quit living in the past. i will tell them, sorry, that's where i often like to be. i await future albums, though certainly not with the anxiousness i once did. the last few have left me...perhaps like holly golightly's cat; kicked right out of that taxi into the rain. wolf - jeopardy boy heineken drinkin old school angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 01:00:04 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." If I want to say something, I'll say it. Stop making up your own reasons why others are saying certain things. The REASON I said that was as simple as just thinking it would be neat to see them both back to back. I know Michelle is going to play her new single. And I can tell you that if Jewel broke out with something like Serve the Ego, while the two acts may be totally different, I'd most likely like both of them. So stop assuming you know everything. Everything isn't always about a good and a bad, or a winner or loser...I wish you didn't think that. Too things CAN be compared without one "winning". It's called critiquing. >we know you like the young female artists (shakira, britney?, natalie >imbruglia, michelle branch, and i guess jewel, but i'm not sure cuz you >seem to say more bad things about her than good, - ------------------ *You* think *you* know what I like...but you really don't. I like ALOT of artists. You have no idea. Yes I like people like Jewel and Michelle, and some aspects of people like Britney and Shakira, but I also like bands like Guns n Roses, Metallica, Nickelback, Heather Nova, Faith No More, Kid Rock, Shannon Curfman, The Doors, Black Sabbath, and Liz Phair....just to name a FEW. So you really have no idea what my musical interests are. They're quite varied, to say the least. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 01:23:18 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Yeah I remember you vaguely. And I'm glad you posted everything you did, for if I had, or maybe even a few others, we would have gotten flames galore. So I sure hope you don't. But you said exactly what I've been thinking for years now. That person we came to know and love is long gone, as evidenced by her recent appearances especially. One can only hope that one day she'll be back again. If not, at least we'll have the memories! :-) Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 01:26:21 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] Letterman - take 2 Well it was better than last nights performance, but pretty much anything would have been better than that. So her new single is going to be Break Me? No? Sure seems like it would be, since she's played that song 2nd most next to SS the past few months. It's obviously a song of choice for her. Yet This Way is going to be the new single. Yeah, SURE Jewel has input. haha....right. I think we all know better. It wasn't a really great version of Break Me, and a little rushed it seemed, but it beats another episode of SS anyday. By the way, Michelle Branch is going to be on TRL tomorrow debuting her new video, so everyone check it out! :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 02:42:35 EST From: ABear978@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: Jewel Fanbook! Hi to all who are thinking of doing this project! A fanbook similar to what Tanya is talking about had been done many many ages(years) ago. Its full of stories of EDAs. It was given to Jewel by way of Mr. BB as a birthday present. Granted it needs an updated version of itself. I'd encourage anyone or any group of people to do it. If we do want to get it done by her birthday, we need to start ASAP. Another birthday present that Jewel got awhile back was a star(like in the sky, not on the Hollywood walk of fame) named after her. You can check it all out on Mike's EDA do's and don't page, I think. BTW- Mike wasn't there an EDA projects list somewhere for this type of discussion? Despite this harsh upbringing, Jewel hit the coffee-house circuit running, enjoyed a fling with Sean 'come up and see the etchings in my trailer' Penn and then sold over 24 million albums worldwide and four million copies of her poetry collections, making her the most popular poet in America! Jewel's intimate, intelligent folky songs are what draws her fanbase however, and her latest album, This Way, also features Madonna producer Rick Nowles. Her London show will be a mouth-watering prospect for all the right reasons, and some of the wrong ones. As such, she's firing on all cylinders on "Standing Still," the lead single from her third album and a tender lullaby that polishes the heartbroken lilt of her old hit "You Were Meant for Me" to a teary-eyed sheen. The days of Lilith Fair may be long gone, but radio will always make room for lonely-girl emoting with melodies this pretty. The rest of the disc is a similarly slick roots-pop production that's occasionally marred by overwrought singing and lyrical self-indulgence. Ace producer Dann Huff draws on his Nashville background for the country-rockin' "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime," and Jewel matches him with an extra twang in her voice and a few tawdry tales of roadhouse romance. She's got plenty of other good stories, too; it's her bestselling poetic side that sometimes drags things down. But the songs always sound great, especially the standout ballads "Break Me" and "I Won't Walk Away." The latter sports an engagingly mushy chorus that turns unexpectedly dark at the end, hinting at the serious artist who lurks behind the glamorous veil of Jewel's pop stardom. When active, Letterman tapes M-Thursday from 5:30 - 6:30 PM The Friday show actually tapes Thursday at 7:30 PM (you may notice Friday's jokes are never topical for that day) which gives Dave and his staff a 3-day weekend. Then I woke up at 8am for a 3 hour lab. So now I've realized it's on tonight, but am more excited because I know what to expect-Carson will sit down with her and talk to her about cool stuff. (He had Jimmy Kimmel from "The Man Show', and an old friend of his on last night). Also, I have been reading a lot about John Mayer on this list, and from a few friends.. and I too saw the $7.99 Target deal for his CD, and excitedly put it in the cd player, but thought to my self "he sounds nothing like Dave Matthews or his band." Why does everyone think this? And why did everyone say Coldplay sounded like DMB when they sound nothing like him either? I love Coldplay--but they sound more like Radiohead or Rufus than Dave Matthews Band. Maybe i'm the only one who thinks so, but I thought John Mayer sounded nothing like DMB. I didnt really like what he sounded like either. Im sure he's talented onthe guitar, just not my taste. Maybe people who dont listen to lots od Dave think this? I dont know. I was very please with 'Break Me' last night. If Letterman thought SS was beautiful, I wonder what his reaction to 'Break Me' was.
