Subject: RE: [EDA] A Jewel song not really thought about I'm listening now... listening.. ahh, it's like honey inside my hears... ahh, uhmm, uhhh, arghh... it got stuck in my ears.. ooohh.. what's going on... where I am... gosh , I'm inside an elevator!!!... it's imposible!!! AARRHHH!! wait a sec... let me take out the audiophones... that's better!! ;) kidding... DuH!! hehe... actually I like it... it's very VERY atmospheric... oops! sorry.. I mean.. lirically it's great... the words feel like suspended in air ;) Pablo the heat have been really high today.. so I feel a little "atmospheric" (don't ask!) p.s.: I'm not a psychic... but despite all the ramblings and negativity toward the This Way single... I think it's gonna be a big success... it's simple. straight... mainstream... radio friendly... it's going to have a lot of airplay... radio dj's are gonna love it... I see a promising future for that little song... and a lot of greens for Jewel, of course... I'd really like The New Wild West... it's liricaly complex... and musicaly amazing... but dj's won't ever dig this kind of musical poetry... who is Atlantic here to decide what is good for the people... we're her fans but they don't pay attention to us, that sucks! wonder how they do their demographics or marketing research... a looong p.s. hehe.. never again. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2002 10:00 PM Subject: [EDA] A Jewel song not really thought about > Hey Angels, > > I think many people have overlooked Jewel's song "Shadow's Play" there > wasn't alot of talk about it when she first performed it but I do remember > people saying it sounded like elevator music. I thought i'd add to this. I don't listen to the radio much, so I don't know if they have been playing Jewel a lot or not. But the other day I was talking to my friend and he told me to turn on the radio. It was Jewel w/ SS. So right when that ended... I changed it to a different station and there was Jewel w/ SS again. Thin, soft and completely lacking in any depth. Furthermore - this is one of the few appearances I've seen where she HASN"T lip-synced. I'd say 90% of the time she DOES lip-sync. Or more accurately, she sings along with herself. I had the misfortune of being dragged to a Britney Spears concert a couple of years ago (her first major tour I think it was) - she lip-synced at least 90% of that. It was blatant and horrible. She also lip-synced at least 90% of her current tour based on that HBO special. Plus I know somebody who WENT to the Britney Spears concert just recently (the same person who dragged me kicking and screaming to the one a couple years ago) and even that person, who LOVES Britney, admitted she lip-synced 90% of it. That's not the odd TV appearance - that's two major tours. Get your facts straight before you start saying "i told you so". The only songs she doesn't lip-sync are the ballads where she doesn't dance... and frankly I wish she WOULD lip-sync even those, cause it'd be less likely to make my ears bleed. One final comment - her outfit, the set and the whole performance was probably the CHEESIEST thing I've seen in my life! Come on.... the mantel with the picture of her mother? The WHITE grand piano? Britney is known for her lack of class and taste... but last night was hilarious. It's like white trash trying desperately to be classy... it really doesn't work. Grammys I totally forgot about the awards last night..I caught it like around 930pm, so I didn't get to see anyone, but I did see that they were talking about a lot of the people that were there attending. I think is pretty messed up what Michael Green said about anyone who was on the Ama's last night , could forget about performing at the Grammys, they could only attend . I understand about the performances issue, if you perform the same act on the Ama's that you are going to do at the grammys a couple of week later it would be nothing new for the later, of course everyone wants to hear your hit, but to actually bring out to public like that it was pretty stupid.. they could just have a clause that said you can't do the same act or something like that. One thing that artists hate is repression and not to have the liberty to do want they want to do, it's going to be a terrible grammys. Andboth shows are so different, the voting on the ama's are based in album sales I think and the people who vote are vendors. the grammys are voted by your peers but you who have to have at least 6 commercialy released albums, so it's more prestigious. . And she sounded terrible. Fair enough if she actually sounds GOOD when singing live, but she really doesn't. I saw her on TRL recently actually, we now get that travesty of a show on UK MTV, and she really sucked. She sounded all croaky and flat. So I'm left still having no respect for Britney. Oops. Jewel has a voice. She has creativity. That's why I like her. Tom ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 10:55:19 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Here is the Canadian chart info: ALBUMS: #36 (last week: 42) AIRPLAY: #11 (last week: 14) The album chart in Canada continues to act strangely... Jewel has been jumping around a lot lately... I guess she's increasing again because the single is still doing well. I'd say Canada has been the strongest market for this song in terms of radio play. She's about to enter the Top 10 - which would be really cool! The strongest market for singles sales so far has been New Zealand, but since their chart hasn't been updated since December 23rd I can't tell you whether or not the song did actually enter the Top 10 (it was #11 last time I checked), or whether this caused the album to start to sell.
