I know it's a comedy movie, w/ no basis for that statement, but it brings up a subject for the list: How does Jewel merit as a poet? I know of people who think Jewel is contrived and fake. Others think she's the one of the greatest. I'm curious as to what the opinion of this list is. Here's my opinion for what it's worth: Honestly when I first read the book, which was in 9th grade, I didn't understand it. I really tried to but I didn't have the basis of real poetry (not Shel Silverstein) to truly comprehend, so I just skimmed it and didn't really give it much merit. Now that 4 years have passed and I have studied more poety to a greater extent, I can say that I atleast understand it now. (That's a good sign). So now, I read the poems again, after a few years, and I love them. They are not the best poems of our time and Jewel is not the best poet. But I believe that they are raw and simple and speak to the masses. Unlike other higher intellect, metaphysical poets, these poems are accessible to the majority and the subjects are universal. There are some that get more metaphorical, but most are simple, almost Dickinson-like. So I guess I 'm saying that Jewel isn't one of the best ever, and rightfully she probably shouldn't have the biggest selling poetry book of all time, but I enjoy them nonetheless and do not believe that they are contrived and/or fake. In fact, they are raw and candid and honest. My humble opinion, of course. I'm curious to hear others. ~Rachel~ the "I am not size six, my legs are not skinny as sticks and dammit, someone's got to pay" angel - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Check out my LiveJournal at http://www.livejournal.com/~rachkat926/ "How true it is that words are but vague shadows of the volumes we mean." She was up against Creed's "My Sacrifice" and Janet Jackson's new video I forgot the name of it. It was very exciting to watch the numbers go up and down. Jewel started in 3rd place with like 16% and then beat Janet at around 20% then Jewel's percentage was literally moving up a point every second as Creed's percentage was going down. Then with like 20 seconds left in voting time Janet had like 11%, Jewel had 44% and Creed had 45%. In the end, Creed won by 1%. It was very exciting watching Jewel come from way behind to almost win. I remember reading a ways back about how This Way was confirmed as the next single orsomething, but was anyone else as utterly blown away by Serve The Ego as I was the first time they heard it? This song is mind-numbingly amazing! It's my fav. song on the whole CD (well there is a special place in my heart for SIBTW but you know) and I think it would make a huge single! Could you imagine the video?? Sighhhhhh... anyway, it's just my two cents :-) ~~Richard Angel in Devil's Shoes ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jan 2002 03:24:53 From: "Long Le" Subject: [EDA] BUY THE ALBUM Hello All, In a way to promote Jewel's new album. If anyone ask me what I want, I just tell them to buy Jewel's "This Way" cd, either for them or for me. If it's my birthday or if people wanted to get me somthing, I would just say, "buy the Jewel album!". I have over 6 copies of the POY album and hopefully have more of the This Way album soon. off topic: I'm backpacking to Florida to play tennis, anyone from the Fort Lauderdale area that could offer some info on the area? I've been imagining a video everytime I har STE..... I imagine her of course at the begiining admiring herself in front of a mirror, looking all vein and stuff... cut to... "underneath the disco lights, everyone is feeling alright...." the club scene, alot of people looking all strung out, tall skinny guys in 70s-80sish clothes and afros (for some reason i like that style... there was a guy at my school who dressed late 70s retro. it looked so cool), and everyone is all into their own thing, but they all turn their heads as Jewel walks by.... in white platform shoes, a short bright turquoise skirt, and a bright pink feather boa, (overall bright clothing)..... "Seeeeeerve the Ego!" she's being carried on one of those bed things, and everyone is fanning her w/ palms and feathers and all that weird stuff, as if she were the queen of Egypt or something.... I don't know, whenever I hear the song, I think of this whole weird concept for a video.... like a really trippy atmosphre, which ends in chaos.... and then she's just walking down a dark road, with the chaos still going on behind her.... and she's just all like "la la la la la la.... the ego...." (you know the part where she's humming and stuff? Explaining everything I'm invisioning is hard... I wish y'all can just watch my imaginations when i'm hearing this song.... hehe cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #1 *************************
