I was in my car and SS came on the radio, I turned to another station and SS was on that station at the same time, then I turned to the big pop station and SS was on that station at the same time too. It was so cool, SS was on 2 adult contemporary stations and the pop station all at the same time. She's getting a lot of play on the radio here in St.Louis. I hear SS pretty much everytime I turn on the radio! Just thought I would share. I highly doubt that for the follwing reasons: 1) we've seen her on TV recently in several apperances, and her teeth are the same. 2) you can't just take a plier and pull a few teeth to their straightness. in other words you can't get perfect teeth overnight 3) *braces* straighten teeth. Jewel does not have braces. if there was a miracle way to straighten teeth quickly without braces, many people would be using this option, rather than having metal brackets on their teeth from 12-24 months. so thinking logically, there is no possible way Jewel's teeth would have gone from crooked to straight in such a short time, ESPECIALLY since she does not have braces. cymbie. tree hugger. ** if love is a river heartache is a desert. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, December 18, 2001 5:15 PM Subject: [EDA] Teeth fixed? > EDA's, > > I just wanted to confirm this. Britney was wearing a white lacy shirt that looks like the one that Jewel was wearing. Just my 2 cents. trust me, there is no special technology to miraculously straighten teeth overnight. You can make skin look darker with makeup, thats nothing new. but nothing other than braces can straighten teeth, and it takes at least a year depending on the severity of the crookedness. cymbie. tree hugger. ** if love is a river heartache is a desert. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 21:51:06 -0500 From: "Sandy" Subject: Re: [EDA] Teeth fixed? > 2) you can't just take a plier and pull a few teeth to their straightness. > in other words you can't get perfect teeth overnight > > 3) *braces* straighten teeth. This is not entirely true (and not picking on cymbies post, but it was the last I read that said this). You can get perfect teeth virtually overnight *without* braces... the only reason that people don't run around rampant doing this is because most average, or even "well-off" people wouldn't be able to afford it.... Jewel, on the other hand, could. I'm not saying she did, but it is possible to straighten your teeth in a short amount of time as long as you have lots of time & money to spare to get it done. She also could have had her teeth fixed without getting them straightened.... she could have had them filled & filed to just appear straighter, or she could have had invisalign for months and months now and her teeth are starting to straighten themselves out.... Frankly I don't give a crap either way - I mean, I don't think she *needs* to fix her teeth, but if the girl wants to fix her teeth, let her, who here who's had crooked teeth hasn't wanted them straightened? or who here who is/has been 10 or 15 lbs overweight never wanted to lose it? or had a mole they wanted removed? It's natural for people to want to fix what they view as their imperfections. People shouldn't be disappointed in Jewel for being human, and wanting to be able to give a great big smile to the camera without feeling self concious....and on that note, someone posted an interview not too long ago from recently, where Jewel said that she would consider getting her teeth fixed....so it's not out of the realm of possibility.... ~ Sandy http://www.envy.nu/angeloflove ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2001 01:12:02 +0100 From: "Mr. Moon" Subject: [EDA] Reheating Break Me/Serve The Ego lyrics thread OK... since whenever there is a time of heavy traffic on the list, I get seriously behind on my reading and there are always piles of digests I skip to get to the current discussions and then when everything dies down a little, like today... well then I try to get through the older ones. And so since we had such a thing recently, I only came about Sean's post analyzing the lyrics an hour or so ago. I checked the following digests to find replies and I read them, but none of those satisfied me completely... so i decided to reheat this subject if only for a few minutes, which is how long it'll take you to read my post. And I'll go with a direct reply approach. I always look forward to Sean's posts, cause whether I agree with them or not, they make sense and are decently argumented (for my taste)... but most of all it's usually some alternative to widespread straightforward "it can not be any other way" thinking. But this I think is the first one that bugged me to a point that I can not believe the same person wrote it... even though it's recognizable in style and topic. Here we go: >Here's a quick >analysis of the lyrics of both. Much like a witness at a criminal trial, I'd >like to state my credentials. I have a BA from Drew University, with a major >in English and a double minor in Writing and Sociology. So, I think when it >comes to analyzing song lyrics I am pretty well-versed, educated, what have >you. I think the ability to think would be the only credential one needs to state their opinion about something. Same for analyzing lyrics. Those majors and minors of yours give you little if none at all in that department. I had a teacher with a Ph.D. in Computer Science who had no idea XOR logic existed and taught us about the LRU (which she said means Last Recently Used) algorithm for managing Virtual Memory as "the data we used last is expected not to be used again soon and is selected for replacing"... Those of you who know a thing or two on the subject need not pointing out how ridiculous this is... but when I pointed this out to her and said that LRU stands for "Least Recently Used" as we replace the pages that we're not currently using... she said it could be but that she didn't have the material with her and that she will check it at home. If she had the ability to think she'd realize that VM that would constantly replace data last used would result in constant misses and would slow down our computers significantly... I'd love to see that technology used in cache... now that would be fun. Anyways... I'm not saying you, Sean, can't think... far from it... just that titles on their own don't mean anything. However those titles are evident in your writing and ability to express yourself as you are one of the most articulate people on here. What I'm saying is that you took the straightforward road this time... > Break me. Most of the song isn't inherently self-degrading, it's merely > mediocre writing and typical "love" cliches. This typifies the first stanza. I agree with somebody who said that love clichis aren't really evident here, but rather in This Way (the song)... which I think is the worst song on the album (I haven't submitted my review of the album yet since I just recently heard all the songs, cause, as you know, it's not released in Europe yet... and those responsible should be shot!... so my review will come soon). I'd like to see more lyrics... but they aren't really clichi... cause if they are... there are is no description for "love be still, love be sweet... stay forever and forever... etc.) >Then comes the chorus: "So break me, take me, just let me fill your arms >again" >To be broken and taken. Does this sound pleasurable to any sound-minded human >being? No. This sounds like a masochist. Someone who enjoys being hurt, >invaded, damaged. The key word is right there in the title. Break. Is a >broken leg a good thing, a broken heart, a broken spirit? No. So why the hell >would any sane person want to be broken? I think there could really be something with that "as a horse" theory... as in to tear down her defenses. I still have a feeling that this song is written from a perspective of getting back with somebody whose heart you've broken, just because you've never really given it a chance and then realize how they were right for you and would do anything to have them back... like get rid of all the walls and become the awesome yet fragile person on the inside. Can you find a line that would contradict this theory? Second of all... falling in love... that's masochistic by itself... cause we all know that huge majority of times it does not work out and you get seriously hurt... but time in between is sometimes well worth it. I'd think you should have enough personal experience by this age to kinda get this. So if it's how I said in the above paragraph... then there's nothing wrong with being broken... but if it's like this, then I guess sometimes you're just willing to adjust yourself for the sake of love... men and women do this equally... yet time will show if it's worth it. I personally don't believe in compromising yourself for a relationship, but I don't think it's degrading either... and if it is... it's not solely women who'd something like that. > Take me is similar. To be taken >implies that you are being moved against your will. You are taken to prison, >taken into custody, taken in for questioning. A kidnapped child is taken. - - "Take me Garth!" - - "Where? I'm low on gas and you need a jacket." I bet the chick (the name of Kim Basinger's character for some reason escapes me at this very moment), really wanted Garth to make her suffer. I think this clearly shows that taking somebody can be other than against their will. You can take somebody for a walk, to a ball game and yes to bed... and they won't mind! :) Especially if they ask to be taken. > And >then the fill his arms again part is again, mostly just cheesy writing, but >to fill someone else's arms implies that the woman is not an individual, but >a thing, a treasured object whose use is to fill the man's arms. I can't even begin to describe how silly this is. Cheesy writing? Perhaps. But to go as far as to say that this line objectifies women is ridiculous. There's no indication that she wants to be an arm filler at best... but to be held by someone is not a worst thing you might want. Heck I want to fill somebody's arms every day... do you feel I degrade you (as a fellow male person) into an object... or only myself... I really don't see the logic behind what your saying... I think you're reaching... when it doesn't fit. > Then comes: >"I'll let you make me Just let me feel your love again." >I'll let you make me? This is a blatant oxymoron. If he's making you, you're >not letting him. If you are made to do something it again implies being >forced, against one's consent or choice. When you're a kid your parents make >you go to church. Your boss makes you get him or her coffee. Being made to do >something is not pleaurable, it has a negative implication to any logical, >sane, not-masochistic human being. Sean I have a feeling your dictionary sucks... cause it obviously has only one explanation for each word. YES! I'll let you make me. Just as you can let somebody make a snowman in your front yard... you can let somebody make a whole new You. It's a more complicated process, granted, but it can be done. I'll refer to what I wrote under the "break me" line and apply it here as well. This clearly goes hand in hand with break me... in the meaning of arranging one to your liking... again with approval of the person. > Serve the Ego. This song isn't even close to having such double meaning. I'll skip the lines you used cause it's of no use... and go directly to bigger picture. > She has good love ballads. I'll put Jessica >or Emily up there with anybody's best. But again, these songs don't find >their way onto Jewel's LPs. I absolutely agree with you. Jessica is her finest song IMO and it can make me cry... which I can't say for her released stuff - well certainly since Spirit. And it seriously is a crime that it hasn't been on any of her albums (yet). Although I think it's better this way, cause she has this habit that makes me so pissed off at her, cause she butchers the lyrics and changes the tune (speed, mood)... and if she did that to Jessica it would just kill me... and it does have plenty lyrics... which is a serious threat! > So, if you like songs like "Break Me" and "Serve >the Ego," so be it. But to deny that they are about submissiveness and >subjugation is to be blind to the on-the-page lyrical content of the songs. I wonder who's blind here Sean. You say: "Then the whole thing about a woman saying it is her destiny to be controlled by a man, that's pretty scary." She never once mentions a man! Where do you find that she's singing to a guy? I went over and over the lyrics... and can't see it. She starts with "mirror mirror"! I am confident that she's talking to herself... her ego... like you said for the song Break Me... the key word is right there in the title... EGO... looking yourself in the mirror thinking you're all that, definitely has something to do with your own ego. >And, contrary to what some have said, they are not satires. >Rocker Girl is a satire. Kiss Your Ass is a satire(Both, AGAIN, unreleased). Break Me is >clearly not. And Serve the Ego does have a hint of sarcasm to it, but not in >the lines I quoted above, and especially not in Jewel's "About The Songs" >section of the liner notes. Well I agree Rocker Girl & Kiss Your Ass are great satires and that Break me is definitely not a satire... but there is definite satire in STE. Yes even in the lines you quoted and in "About The Songs" section... perhaps simply, cause it's NOT about a man... it's about an ego. And how you failed (fail) to see that is a mystery to me. As for serving a man... why not... now and then... I think everybody should dedicate a few moments of their lives to simply serve somebody... even if just as their birthday present. OK, that's it for me on this topic, which I still can't believe got started by Sean Hooks. Well anyway... I'll post my This Way review in the next couple of weeks as soon as I get a clear opinion on all the songs and I'll say some of this and more then! l8r - -- Have fun and stay beautiful Dr. RomeAntic, an angel with the worst stroke of luck and a flash of revelation "Heaven's kinda far but I swear that when I'm coming it's close Cuz we sin so well Lead us not into temptation Oh, but what a way to go!"
