It shows her record company that her fans haven't deserted her. We all know that Atlantic was afraid everybody had forgotten about Jewel, and they had reason to be afraid. In today's mainstream music scene, being gone for 2 years is like death for a career. Being gone 6 months is bad enough! The public is FICKLE as hell, and we know it. It's very unfortunate, and indicative of the way mainstream music is today (a sad state of affairs), but it's true. Jewel has proven to her record company that she HAS a fanbase, and that her success isn't just based on media hype. I mean think about it - an artist who's music sounds NOTHING like what's "popular" right now, who has been out of the scene for two years, whose single isn't any huge hit, and who has done (or had done at the time) relatively minimal press and promotion still managed to debut in the Top 10. How amazing is that? I mean at the time of This Way's actual release, Jewel had done a radio tour, appeared on the tonight show, and been part of a Vanity Fair music issue... that's it. She basically did JUST enough press to let her fans know she had a record coming out. Compare that to the hoopla that surrounded the release of Spirit. Even better compare that to the hoopla surrounding the release of Britney Spears' latest record. Frankly, it proves to Atlantic that Jewel is a long-term artist. No matter what the state of music, her fans won't desert her. And that's GREAT. Because it means they'll support her in all the musical endeavours she chooses... because they know her fans will still be there. If you look at Atlantic's slate of artists right now... I think you'll see that Jewel is pretty much their only major artist with long-term potential. I'm going to try and make it. I am gonna cut it really close on time though, so I'm not sure I'll be able too. It looks like I may have an extra floor ticket, if anyone wants it (I got two but no date yet). Hopefully, I won't get a third ticket from the cops. If you see a sheriff giving some guy driving a black sports car with a HGH sticker in the back window a speeding ticket, pull over and try and help me talk my way out of it! I'd actually love to hear her play Hands. I hope she sticks with the same set list as in New York. =) - Alex the geek angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2001 21:59:38 -0600 From: "Eric Levenchuck" Subject: [EDA] JewelStock Offer Update I am no longer taking requests for the three CD JewelStock set. Mike, how come we aren't allowed to re-tree >Jewelstock? This makes no sense to me 5 years later. Actually, considering the #1 main reason that "can never be treed again" rule was put into place when we distributed the tapes originally, it makes complete sense, _especially_ so "5 years later.". The main reason we had that rule? Bootleggers. True bootlegs, the kind that get mass produced like DDDelight and others were. Back then (1996) while there was a fear JewelStock would end up on a mass-produced bootleg CD, we made most of the rules of the tree to hopefully prevent a bootlegging, turning that fear into a mild fear. So far it has not been fully or majoratively booted from what I have seen, and in fact as far as I know only two tracks from JewelStock ended up on a mass-produced bootleg CD. I may be wrong about this, but I have often checked and have not seen one yet, then again, I am not exactly in or near any MAJOR metropolitan areas. I fully attribute this due to those rules and stipulations we employed on the JewelStock tape tree, the process we used to select the tree's branches, the fact that it was cassette tape only, and the overall co-operative effort by the EDAs as a whole to "protect" the tapes, per our/those same requests/rules/stipulations. Treeing JewelStock again right now, especially so on CD (I shudder at the thought), would be only asking for it to end up being mass bootlegged. Remember, those tapes were a gift to the 1996 EDAs by Jewel and Lenedra, and they made some special requests (i.e. "rules"). I and the list of 1996 agreed to the requests, made a promise to abide by them, and I fully expect us to do so.
