Veronica ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2001 06:03:03 EST From: ABear978@aol.com Subject: [EDA] SJC: An "old school" story(break out the coffee, its long) Hi Everybody! Since the list has seriously mellowed out and gotten friendly, I'll share a story of the first time I met a whole bunch of EDAs, a few later became very good friends. It was September 1997 and Jewel was touring again. She was going to unveil her non-profit foundation -then called- Common Ground at her Hospitality Point show. I want to point out that *disclaimer* because of the long time frame since my story happened, some details maybe sketchy. Got the legal thing out of the way ;-) A few Los Angeles EDAs(SparksMark and "Danny") drove down to my family's house in Santa Ana(about dead center of Orange County) and I was going to drive the three of us down to the venue early to get a GOOD parking spot. We left my house about noon and got to about the location about 1:30pm. I missed my exit to turn into where the show was going to take place. On the bridge-that we crossed about 5 times- we could see the stage set up and the various trucks full of gear. Now knowing where to go, we parked nearby and got out and the first thing I heard was Jewel rehersing LMJLMA, synth organ blaring out like crazy on the solo. Danny and I were thinking of either a)snatching a few "security" jackets that were unattended and hanging out front for awhile b)throwing Mark over the fence into the venue-he weighted probably 120 lbs, small fry ;) or c) go to Java Joes and hang with the EDAs and loose our perfect parking spot/miss rehersals/miss any chance of Jewel walking out front and greeting the early birds/getting stuck in traffic back to the venue. So we thought about it for a nanosecond, lets go to Joes. The spot will be here when we get back-LoL! - So we go to the old Java Joes on oh, what street was it? I can't remember, its two blocks from the new Joes. Anyhoo, we walk in (its about 2:30 or 3:00pm by now)and it looks really awesome. The three of us felt like we were on holy ground -LoL! - the ground that Jewel walked on and played guitar and sang on! And so I sit down and introduce myself. And there was a very talkative girl, I'm blanking on her name. It was her birthday and she was having a birthday party earlier before the gathering, but not many EDAs showed up. Mostly cause nobody knew about her party till the last minute. I start talking to a tall, lanky dirty blonde guy named Jason. I think we somehow got onto the topic of gasoline and crude oil prices which rebounded to something semi-related to Jewel's music. Got to meet the lovely and always funny Gerritt and about 7 or 8 other EDAs. Catty-corner from Joes in a thrift store, they were selling Jewel posters for a few bucks. Some of the girls left to get posters and anything else Jewel related at the store and a band was setting up for a show that night. I decided to wander around Ocean Beach for a few minutes, looking for any remninse of the InnerChange. No luck. *Fast Forward to the show ZZiippp* Danny, Mark and hoped back in my car and drove to the venue and to our discontent, our parking spot had been taken long ago and we had to park far away. So far that we had to take a double decker bus to the show-free ride of course-. As I was walking up to the front where my seat was, I heard some guy singing about corn dogs or something. Lo and behold it was my first-but far from last- encounter with Steve Poltz quirky sense of music. That night, he did "Silver Linning" "Love is a Rose" and "Daddy Shes a Goddess" with Jewel during his set. They told a very detailed version of their Mexico whale watching trip and in it the meaning of YWMFM. While on their trip(jewel narrating), Steve kept saying semi-sarcasticly "you were ment for me" to her and she got tired of it and they worked out the song, of course this writing of their biggest hit did not happen untill after breaking into a beachside vacant motel/getting stopped in their boat by Federales/Federales invite Steve and Jewel onto their boat/get stuck in chase with drug runners/end up catching the runners and buring their marijauna "Steve was a good, helpful Catholic boy who loved hauling the 20 lb bundles of weed to where they were going to get burned" "The woman maning the fire say its only for her arthritis. Yeah, right lady" At the end of his set he said that he had just gotten back from touring Europe and he wrote a song called the "Star Wars Song" over there and wanted to see if the home crowd could roar as Chewbakaa louder than the European crowds. So it took a few timid trys and we proved we could out roar anybody else. Jewel came on after a break and if there was a roof- it was outdoors- it would have been blown off! She did her-which I love- break in the middle of a song to tell a story and then jump back in to where she left off a few times. There were some obnoxious pair of middle aged women who were laughing when Jewel sang "Fat Boy" cause they didn't listen to the story of the song. And then all of a sudden, she whipped out a black electric gutar and proceeded to rock out. I remember she got Lenedra out on stage to talk about her non-profit foundation and they sang "Face of Love" and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"-I thought this song was SO childish, ah well no serious complaints. I think she got Atz down from Alaska too and they did "Yo" but I maybe that was from watching the VH1 Hard Rock Live one too many times. Alan, did Atz make an appearance at a Jewel show in September of 1997? :) I remember for her encore, she did Amen and she allowed the crowd to mingle at the front of the stage. Near the end of the song, a guy jumps up and puts his arm around her and I hear "I love you Jewel" mutter out of his smiling mouth through the sound system as half a dozen flash bulbs go off. At this time Jewel had her eyes closest and fully in the moment. A second later after the cameras went off, a security guy almost throws the kid on the stage floor and proceeds get him off the stage with a lot of pulling of his clothes. Afterwards I heard the kid-he was probably about 20-ish- boast about his accomplishment. The three (Danny, Mark and I)of us preceeded to find the other EDAs that we met earlier in the day. We all jumped onto a doubledecker bus to our cars, said our goodbyes/exchanged email addresses and went home. Over time, Jason and I would keep chatting-but not about gasoline prices usually- and we've become very good friends. I don't think he's stayed at my house, but I do know of many living room concerts were the floor, a heavy blanket, and pillow or two were my bed in his house. I loved it, except for the other EDAs in the room who started snoring when their head hit the pillow and the kittens tromping between the kitchen and the bedroom all night long. :-P If you made it this far without skipping, CONGRATULATIONS! Adrian, is very right to say that the EDAs are not -and probably will never- the same. At least we can still make new memories with new and old EDAs alike, except for Dennis cause he rambles to anyone within arms length so much that you forget the memories that just happend and try to shoo Dennis onto some other unlucky EDA. Just Kidding Dennis! :) Wish I went Woody roping with Atz Jr. in OB back in the day....Will Woody ever travel again? Peace the Kung Fu Angel Alex Long live college radio! Semester is over with! First off, Most of the CD's being made today, that you buy in a store are made from transfered analog tapes. Unless your buying Sharika new's disc. anything prior to 1990 was done on analog machines. Let me tell you. When I transfer my tapes onto cd. They sound exactly the same. and they will last longer and are much more convenient. I can skip thru the tracks and not worrying about wearing the cd out. I can play it a million times and it will still sound the same. You play a tape 100 times and it will not sound the same. So there is really no debate whether tapes are better than cd's. Because cd's will win every time. Oh and did i mention the fact, that i make perfect cd clones, while cassettes loss sound every time you copy them. If you prefer to listen to hissy deteriorated tapes, be my guest. I think I'll listen to my perfectly digitized cd's. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2001 10:36:46 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: RE: [EDA] Jewelstock copies Did you read Mike's post about this? Obviously not. Your CD copy is not better than my tape copy, I guarantee that. And you are listening to the same analog version I am...only probably of lesser quality. You aren't listening to digital sound, so the fact it's on a CD is meaningless. It's analog audio in disguise. When you buy a new CD, *that's* digital sound. *That's* different. You can't compare that to this application. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2001 11:36:05 -0200 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: [EDA] first #1!! It's highly unlikely there will ever be another "Jewelstock" as we've come to know it. The one exception *may* be if Jewel's popularity diminishes to almost nothing, years, and years from now...and she then organizes something for those EDA's still into her music at the time. Maybe sort of like a reunion thing.
