Everyone with basic cable knows the storybook tale of one Jewel Kilcher, the porcelain-voiced siren who grew up in rural Alaska and pilgrimaged to San Diego, living out of a van and working to make it big. She did in 1995 with the under-produced but emotionally precise "Pieces of You," a record half tracked in a coffee house, that ended up storming the charts with hits like "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "You Were Meant For Me." 1998 saw the release of her follow up "Spirit." While certainly not recorded on the cheap, "Spirit" retained the simple sound of Jewel and her guitar and only used accompaning instruments and knob tweaks when needed. It seems the black hole of Nashville has swallowed the young songwriter with "This Way." The album is her most tweaked and polished to date. None of the rough edges of "Pieces of You" can be heard, which is disheartening. Part of Jewel's appeal has always been her ability to create intimacy on a listener by listener basis, from radio stations to arena gigs. "This Way" amps up her sound into a wall of mix station ready pop but does nothing to engage the listener. It's not to say that Jewel should be confined to coffee house musings, she's entitled to kick out her jams, but not at the expense of the material. The only full-band constructed track that works is "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone," a bluesy rock anthem that ends with the famous porcelain voice screaming out in frustration over a wall of wah wahs and drum rolls. It works because the noise is needed, but even it suffers from the buff and polish job that's so common in Nashville producing. Rough edges are sometimes needed. Aside from the locale of the recording, the subject matter also leans toward the cowboy way. It's more than a given that Jewel is more than fixated on the life of her rodeo champ boyfriend, as evident in "Till We Run Out Of Road." The track is her best attempt at George Strait's "Amarillo By Morning" but gets too mushy to objectively look at the lonely bull-riding life. While you may be sick of Jewel and her VH1-ready backstory she's still one of the most promising young songwriters today. If Neil Young broke now all his trappings would seem just as pretentious. The same goes for Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and all the other truly melodic songwriters in the history of folk-rock-pop. If Ms. Kilcher can learn to deal with burnout and find a more acute commentary, her future is wide open. Atlantic Records needs to stop pushing her into a clichE= and let her write music. Her productivity (three albums since she finished "Pieces" in '95) compared to her overexposure as a celebrity is disheartening (Note: this doesn't account for her marathon touring scheduling, something admirable but occasionally counterproductive). Photo spreads don't make great songwriters, but a long career of hit and miss studio work does. The intimacy and fragile feminism of "Pieces of You" doesn't need to be revisited, but its authenticity and spirit does. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2001 12:56:25 EST From: LAJEWEL10@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] If you could design JMerch... As with her first Conan performance (my fave TV one), I've always felt she's looked better with darker hair. If you compare a picture from the WWSYS video to one from the SS video, it doesn't even really look like the same person anymore. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2001 16:23:59 -0500 (EST) From: space_bandits@webtv.net Subject: RE: [EDA] NJC: alisa/adrian/arguments on the list >"i'd rather sh*t in my own mouth" GG Allin wannabe's are everywhere these days...lol Received: from smtpin-101-12.bryant.webtv.net (209.240.198.33) by storefull-614.iap.bryant.webtv.net with WTV-SMTP; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 12:07:54 -0800 (PST) Received: by smtpin-101-12.bryant.webtv.net (WebTV_Postfix+sws) id 4A0DC1A35; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 12:07:55 -0800 (PST) Delivered-To: space_bandits@webtv.net Received: from smoe.org (jane.smoe.org [66.89.201.78]) by smtpin-101-12.bryant.webtv.net (WebTV_Postfix+sws) with ESMTP id F38D81A55; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 12:07:53 -0800 (PST) Received: from smoe.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id fB8K7ORj023156; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 15:07:24 -0500 (EST) Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16/submit) with SMTP id fB8K7F9u023151; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 15:07:15 -0500 (EST) Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.10); Sat, 8 Dec 2001 15:06:38 -0500 Received: from smoe.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id fB8K6ZRj023110 for ; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 15:06:35 -0500 (EST) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16/submit) id fB8K6Y6Q023109 for jewel-outgoing; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 15:06:34 -0500 (EST) Received: from is2.utmb.edu (mx1.utmb.edu [129.109.195.3]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id fB8K6PRj023104 for ; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 15:06:25 -0500 (EST) Received: from exchange3.utmb.edu (email.utmb.edu [129.109.52.245]) by utmb.edu (PMDF V6.1 #38124) with ESMTP id <0GO100JGEJU8KF@utmb.edu> for jewel@smoe.org; Sat, 08 Dec 2001 14:06:08 -0600 (CST) Received: by exchange3 with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id ; Sat, 08 Dec 2001 14:04:10 -0600 Content-return: allowed Date: Sat, 08 Dec 2001 14:06:51 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Not only do I agree with the whole natural thing. But mainly cause it was the first time I saw her =) I was at a friends house and their we're a bunch of people there. The tv was on mute and I first noticed it half way through, one of the black and white parts where she is sitting in the bathroom. I was thinking to my self "wow, she is really cute!". I had no clue who she was or what she was singing though.
