[Lee Garner ] Re: [EDA] freedom's just another word... ["TSUNAMI" Subject: [EDA] Rosie show My review...it wasn't a horrible performance of SS. But I wish she'd start playing something else. I guess someone heard the EDA's fussing about how the guitar player couldn't sing backup since on her very next performance, he wasn't singing backup! LOL I have no idea who that lady was though...does anyone know? Has she worked with other artists before? Contrary to what another said, I think she SHOULD tour with at least one, or better yet, two back up singers...just to make it sound closer to how it does on the album. I think the fact we're seeing at least one now, on a TV show, is a sign of things to come. :-) I think the guys bailed out and just flat out said they don't want to sing backup...and they really shouldn't have to, since they aren't "singers". I notice that she hasn't been putting her guitar down the last couple times now at the end...maybe this is how it will be from now on. The interview was ok, but Jewel was being rather weird I think. Especially in that whole 5 things about you deal. Maybe she was playing around, but it just wasn't working very well. I wouldn't be surprised if people start saying how cocky she is, etc. as a result of that segment. We may know that's just how she is, or can be, but I don't expect the average viewer to realize this. I thought it was funny though that she didn't know the running time of YWMFM. I wondered if Rosie was referring to the album, or single version though? I think they are different running times. Then there's the other mix also. That was sort of a trick question. I wish Jewel had asked something like "which version?" to put Rosie on the spot. LOL Like she did with the "someone sprayed you with something" question. Once Rosie said maybe it was spit, then Jewel knew who she was talking about. Anyway...nothing really stood out other than these things. Just an average performance. She did seem not to be as off key as she has been in recent performances though. So that was good. Saying she's a wild sort of woman who needs a good man to calm down her wild ways. That's the way I personally would interpret it. I certainly don't think Jewel is into the S & M thing, although ya never know! LOL ;-) If this has all been said before I'm sorry for duplicate posts. Everyone have a great day! Kristie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 18:07:16 From: "Gerry Lipnowski" Subject: [EDA] re Break Me Hi folks, Here's my two cents on interpreting "Break Me," which I consider to be a perfectly lovely song. Seeing as the song was written for Ty, a professional cowboy, I always thought "Break Me" referred to the expression for establishing a relationship with a horse. When you "break" a horse, it means you can ride it and create a partnership with it. Until you break it, it's just a creature lovely to look at, but you can't get too close to it. So I just reckoned it was Jewel's way of reaching out to him, saying "okay, now you can break me....." or "stop breaking horses Ty, and break ME!" I don't personally see it as asking to be dominated. Although horses can be broken somewhat violently, I have personally see another far more gentle method which is based on earning the horse's trust. (It was impressive.) I take the view that it is that more gentle method that would be the appropriate metaphor Jewel was creating. But then again, I'm no cowboy. That's just the way I see it ;-) To me, it's a playful, sensual love song. Nothing wrong with that in my book.... Howdy y'all, Today turned out to be a complete disaster for me. I just found out that I am disqualified from joining the Army :( Get this...I was charged this past April with simple possesion of marijuana in NC. I went to court, and was told that all I had to do was pay $190 and do 24 hours community service...no problem, nothing new to me ;) The problem is, my record now shows that I'm on unsupervised probation until this coming April because of the charge...I WAS NEVER TOLD A THING ABOUT THIS!!! Is this at all legal? Anyways, I cannot join up because I ommitted this, and this is the first I've heard of it...I usually get kissed before I get...well, you know. Anyways, there's a former EDA named Beth that lives here in Spartanburg, SC...she was on the list up until about 2 years ago. I never knew this, so does anyone else remember her? We are both regular customers at the same coffeehouse here, but either of us ever knew the other was an EDA...how ironic, wouldn't y'all say? I hope Mike doesn't mind the illegal references in this, otherwise I'll be hearing from him, possibly in a manner I'd rather he not need to resort to :) Lee Garner Confederate EDA (Angel of Dixie) "...maybe if we are surrounded in beauty, one day we will become what we see..." Howdy y'all, Wow, I'm posting twice in the same day...haven't done that in years :) Anyways, the S&M reference made me think about something...Metallica's S&M concert. What is JEWEL did an album with a symphony, or orchestra? I wonder what that would be like...I believe I would really like it. What do y'all think? "boring" is not the word - try "refreshing" In light of his insensitive and ignorant verbal attacks on a mother and her young daughter, Derrick should consider himself lucky that he wasn't banned from this list for much more than a month. Mike gave him a break and made D's penalty only 11 days on the sidelines (but, geez, the fresh air on the list made it seem like a month!) Was he chastened or wisened by the experience? Apparently not. He thinks it's ok to say stupid or mean things as long as he adds emoticons to his messages, indicating he's smiling or joking. Imagine a man or boy, in the non-virtual world, who goes around punching people, or spitting on them, and then asks to be excused for his actions because he was smiling when he hurt people. Can anyone truly be so lacking in self-awareness? When an obnoxious bully shows sits down at a dinner party, even polite people need say something to curb the cruelties. When someone on a mail list, like D does here, attempts to continuallly force his opinions on others, dominate discussions, start negative threads, and basically says "look at me" all the time, it can really be... tiresome. Hmmm.. now THAT is "boring"! I received lots of private thank yous from EDAs for speaking up a day or so ago, and I know how most people don't want to take any more of D's abuse - privately in emails or on this list. It's unfortunate that one person can create so much bad feeling. Mike, when you give people breaks - like you gave D - I sure hope they'll appreciate it more in future ( : peace and cheers, Adrian (the tired-of-negative-ecocentric-emoticon-or-not-pains-in-the-butt Angel) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 10:55:56 -0800 From: "billy streeter" Subject: [EDA] Alice in Winterland review Sorry, I've been sick and not in the mood to write. I feel better now but I'm not good at writing so bare with me. Jewel will be towards the bottom for those who just want to hear about her. My friend and I got there about 5 minutes before the doors opened to see this big line and we still had to find parking which took 20 min. When we got inside we thought we would get crappy seats. We were walking around deciding which table to sit at, in the back, when someone asked "is there just two of you?" we said yeah. Then she told us to go to the front and an usher will seat us up there. We ended up sitting three tables back, the closest you can get with out being on the special reserved list. Also it was 21+ but nobody carded anyone all night. The first act was unannounced. His name is Matt Nathanson and can I just say this guy is the s*@& ! Sorry I wouldn't normally have to bleep out words on here but he rocked. He plays acoustic guitar and had a chello player with him. Not only was his music excellent but he was absolutely hillarious. Towards the end of the show he had the entire crowd of 650 people singing along to Bon Jovie's "Living On A Prayer". Personally not one of my favorite songs but it was awesome. I usally don't jock people like this but if you have a chance to see this guy live I strongly suggest you do so. I belive he is doing a west coast tour and he's playing in SF (he's an SF local) again on saturday. I would see him again then but it's my bro's b-day. You can check his web site at- www.mattnathanson.com Next up was Shelby Lynn. She has that song on the radio, Wall In Your Heart I think it's called. After everyone had a great time with Matt, Shelby comes out acting like some musical superstar. She's as skinny as a twig and in my mind and others she was tweeking hard core off coke or crystal meth or something. Even though she had the wrong attitude and stage presence I feel sorry for what happened. By the second song the entire back area of Bimbo's was in an uproar with people talking, luaghing, hooting and hollaring. After that song the bassist and drummer kept a slow quiet beat and she was saying things like "I've got time", "can I get a littel respect" and " I'll remember this when I come back". They finally just went into thier third and final song which at the end of she threw her mike, stand and all, to the ground and stormed off the stage. Leaving her band behind looking at each other like what do we do now? I guess she has done this before at a concert with the same radio station but that time she walked off in the middle of a song. Well what ever, Jewel was next! So the moment we've all been waiting for... She appeared on stage with the hood of a black sweatshirt covering her forehead all the way to her eyes, very cute I thought. She took that off and was wearing a black tee with I believe gold color writing on it. As she started to strum her guitar their we're very few people talking and she stops and says "be very very quite" just like Elmer Fudd does when he's hunting wabbits. At that point you could have heard pin drop on a bed of feathers. She madd respect unlike Shelby Lyyn. My memory isn't what it used to be so the set list goes something like this Near You Allways Rosie And Mick You We're Meant For Me Cold Song Jesus Loves You WWSYS encore Ava Maria Break Me Those are the correct songs but the order may be a littel off so check the web site later on and I'm sure they'll have an accurate list. Jewel was absolutely money that night. She was on key, very talkitive, and she even busted out with new stories. This show was a great plublicity move. I'm sure most people there like Jewel's hits but weren't that into her but by the end off the show just loved her. One guy sitting at the same table as I had been making littel jokes and comments during Shelby and Matt but by the end of Ava Maria I heard him say "WOW! that girls got talent". Then after she sang Break Me and left the stage the Standing Still video was played on the big screen and only like 50 people got up to leave. I was sitting there and I looked around at 600 people with there heads glued to the screen. Well, that was the show. I do have one question though. Probabley only for bay area EDA's but if anyone knows or has an idea please let me know... My friend was listening to the morning show of the radio station (Alice 97.3) who put on the concert the day of. She said they we're talking about the last time Jewel did a show with them, the Now and Zen festival I'm sure, the morning show guy, Vinny of Sarah and Vinny, said or did something to Jewel that either pissed her off or embarassed her. So much so that Jewel made the radio station promise not to ever talk about it. My friend said even the traffic lady was asking and they we're like "we cannot talk about it, callers DO NOT CALL IN ASKING WHAT HAPPENED BECAUSE WE CAN NOT SAY". Then the Vinny guy was doing something that had to do with it and Sarah said "not funny Vinny!" and he did it again and she said "STILL, not funny Vinny!!!" For the love of god what happened???????? I was at Now and Zen but I don't know what happened. If anyone has an idea please, please tell me. Thank you. By the way I'll send the address of where to see pictures of Winterland when they're up. bye - -Billy - ---------- >From: Fredsteve@aol.com >To: jewel@smoe.org >Subject: [EDA] Alice in Winterland? >Date: Wed, Dec 5, 2001, 6:52 PM > > Hey > > Did anybody get to go to the Alice in Winterland concert in San Fransisco? > How was it? Subject: [EDA] NJC: Michelle Lit up! :-) Ok, it's probably not what you're thinking... I went to see her (Miss Branch) last night in concert for a Christmas show. I won't run down her whole set list, but will mention a few highlights for those who are into her music. The first is that she played a cover of the song "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit! Could you imagine Jewel doing this?? HAHAHA Anyone who says Michelle doesn't rock is SO wrong. I always knew she did, and really had alot more potential to more, but this confirmed it. She sounded just like they would, with a female vocalist. It was so cool, and a huge crowd pleaser. Another highlight was her playing a newly written song called "Standing on the Edge". It's a really good sounding song...not very rockin', but I think it could have single potential if it makes it to a future album and would get played on a variety of stations. One more highlight was her doing a cover of the New Radicals song called "You Get What You Give". This was a really popular song a few years ago that some of you may remember. The end of the song got alot of criticism for them talking about Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson, saying he would "kick their ass in", etc. But it's a pretty cool song nonetheless. I think she sang it cause there's a Hanson reference in there, since she's friends with them too. I may be wrong, but this is my guess. It doesn't really seem like a song should would take the time to learn otherwise, but she covered it well and really emphasised the "kick your ASS in" part! It was SO funny! The whole place roared. We're talking an 18,000 seat arena. She got tons of applause from everyone so that was cool to see. There was mostly r&b and hip hop bands on the bill so I wasn't sure how well she would go over with the crowd but they all liked her alot. The band sounded really good too, even better than when I heard them outdoors a couple months ago. She seemed to be in a better mood also so I'm sure that helped....not having to get up at 4:00am and fly across the country would make things better for most anyone I think. As she had done last time before her show. After show comments... It's a really cool feeling to have an extremely popular artist recognize you before you even say "hi" to them. :-) I wasn't even going to stick around afterwards since I wanted to get out of there early, and especially after seeing the 100+ foot long line of people waiting for her autograph. My thinking was that there was no way in heck she would take the time to sign all those people's items. This was far more than what I had seen in Dallas a couple months ago. I wasn't even going to bother standing in line cause I figured she'd leave before I got up to her anyway, so I just kind of hung out off to the side and watched her sign for awhile. I kept waiting and waiting, and people kept coming and coming. We're up to like 40-45 minutes now at least. Michelle's still sitting there signing things! So there's only about 10 people left in line now and I merged in after the last person. A few came in after me then they cut the line off. So I get up to her, she looks at me and goes...."hey I know you! You're the guy in the pic with Steve!" Ok so she didn't remember my name, but hey, I never put it on that picture either, so that's my fault. hehehe I gave her a picture of me and Steve 2 months ago. I figured she'd toss it right after that show or at least not remember it the next day. Especially since I was too absent minded not to write anything on the back of the pic. I was so wrong though. Michelle remember exactly who I was and that I had given it to her and said she still has it! I didn't even know what to say at that point. For someone to acknowledge something like that, at least in my opinion, is pretty cool. I always got the impression that once artists get "gifts", or whatever after a show, they never see or think about them again after that. Which I'm sure is true for most artists. They simply don't have the time or space. So it had been 2 months since I last saw her. Yeah we talked some before, but it wasn't a ton. Maybe a couple minutes. So this really surprised me. I was like "yeah, that's me!". LOL I told her how cool it was she remembered that, and still had the picture. So we get to talking once again, only this time there's like a TON of security around the table, so right after she signs some stuff and takes a pic this security guy was like ok move on move on...hehe...when there was only like 5 people left after me. They were being real jerks about it all though and I think Michelle could tell. So I was just like ok thanks, see ya around! She had like this "I'm sorry" look on her face cause she could tell what jerks those guys were being. But I guess that's how it goes sometimes when you have alot of people and have to have some crowd control. I just think they could have been a little more patient. She never said she had to go or anything but they were the ones who kept rushing people through. Anyhow, it was a really cool time. And this convinced me even more that Michelle takes the time for her fans! This line was much longer than the one in Dallas, and *I* didn't even expect her to sign everything. I mean she was there like almost an hour doing this....but once again, signed each and every person's item. They did cut the line off right after me and a few others, but at that point there really wasn't many people walking over there anymore...mostly just curious onlookers mingling around. Plus I'm sure she had other engagements to attend to on a strict time schedule. I was really impressed. It's great that there are artists still around who try to be as personable as possible with their fans. Especially at the level she's at. Tara is another good example, but she's nowhere near as popular as Michelle is now. So with her it's a bit easier...but of course no artist *has* to be that way no matter the level of popularity. So it's cool either way, but I really wasn't expecting this from Michelle, at least not now. I just hope it continues...she'll only gain more fans by it and I'm sure it'll help her career tremendously. She's a great artist, and just a great person in general, and I think a really good role model for the younger generation as well. :-) Derrick ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #660 ***************************
