Hey EDAs... What was brought up is quite interesting - with regard to what music Jewel listens to at her own leisure and what bands she is aware of. I would be curious to know if she likes any of the bands that were mentioned like the Beatles (RIP George Harrison), Floyd, The Who, Zeppelin, etc.. I grew up listening to classic rock (what my folks listened to), and I guess my mom's hippy-ness rubbed off on me into liking Jewel :) But I'm also into other stuff including classical and some jazz, but most of all, it's "all about heavy metal" :) LOL, I'm kidding. I play drums in a band called Skrypture, although at the present moment we're struggling with finding a vocalist to complete the group. But that's where my passion is. If I wasn't a drummer, I probably would be sitting on a stool on stage at the 313 Gallery (next to CBGB's here in NY) singing and playing acoustic guitar to Cat Stevens covers or Simon and Garfunkel or something. If I may, just for the hell of it, I would like to recommend the following 10 songs to Jewel and to everyone on this list just because I think you all might actually like them. These are somewhat "ballady/folky type metal songs", so open up Audiogalaxy and give it a shot :) Maybe this will open you up to something new to explore. 1 - Blind Guardian [check out "A Past and Future Secret" on the "Imaginations from the Other Side" album or "The Bard's Song" on "Somewhere Far Beyond"] 2 - Rhapsody ["Forest of Unicorns" on the Legendary Tales album] 3 - Manowar ["Master of the Wind" on the "Triumph of Steel" album] 4 - Testament ["Trail of Tears on the "Low" album] 5 - Iron Maiden ["Wasted Years" on "Somewhere In Time"] 6 - Dream Theater ["Peruvian Skies" on "Falling Into Infinity"] 7 - Iced Earth ["Melancholy" on "Something Wicked This Way Comes" 8 - Demons & Wizards ["Fiddler on the Green" on self-titled album] 9 - HammerFall ["Remember Yesterday" on "Legacy of Kings"] 10 - Metallica ["Low Man's Lyric" on "Reload"] I have plenty more I can recommend for those who are really interested. I was really glad to see a new back up singer who is way more quiet, and way more compatible with Jewel. Recently, Mike, our list manager took the extraordinary step of banning you as a consequence of your abusive postings. I noticed that during the month that you were off the list, conversations on this list became more positive, and more varied. Go back and check the historical digests for empirical proof of this. Sure it took a few days for the rancor and controversy you'd stirred up to float away, but it did! And then more people started talking about music, and a wider range of things that actually have to do with Jewel, art, life. Since your return, we've seen the prolongation of asinine threads, such as the one about "Jewel's wage"and similarly negative, and pointless, keyboard noodling. It is true that at times your posts tend to dominate this list - whether that means you're 20 percent or 10 percent of a digest, you're taking up space that used to be filled by dozens of more open-minded and positive EDAs. That's the truth. I don't know why you feel so compelled to dominate discussion on this list ~ at times a reader would think it's the Derrick news and discussion board (with a subdirectory for Michelle Branch); this list used to be more about Jewel and EDAs; and, hopefully, one day it will return to a broader based discussion forum, for folks who don't want, or need to be, the centre of attention. peace and cheers, Adrian (the-since-you-asked-I-gotta-say-it Angel) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 15:10:30 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Rosie Hey Jewel was good on Rosie today. Wow that belt buckle is huge. Standing Still was nice and I don't know if you noticed - but it seemed to me that her vocals were a LOT louder for this performance. I've always felt that her vocals for the live performances have been too soft in the mix (it's not her singing, just the levels). I think they turned up her vocals in the mix and it's sounding a lot better. Also, they brought in a backup singer instead of having the band guys do the backing vocals. Sounds better also... although I don't like backup singers generally - i hope she doesn't tour with one. I doubt she will. She was also really good in the interview. Jewel can be kinda hard to interview at times but I felt like she was a lot more personable and funny in this interview! So that was good. We don't need derrick to have hostility on the list. Derricks not the one who is hostile, but anyone who doesn't like his opinions or sense of humor gets hostile. If I say "I like Michelle Branch" people will be like "oh yeah... she's really good" but if Derrick says "I like Michelle Branch" y'all will say "take your michelle branch discussions to another list jerk-off! this is a JEWEL list!!" and the fighting begins. >Since your return, we've seen the prolongation of asinine > threads, such as the one about "Jewel's wage"and similarly negative, and > pointless, keyboard noodling. That's the truth haha..... thats funny. people always associate alot of posts and alot of negativity to derrick. haha. what about sean hooks? now there's a jerk. he never has anything nice to post. derrick has alot of positive things to say. . and i don't recall derrick starting threads about "jewels a bitch, she has to sign sign autographs whether she likes it or not" and "jewel's a liar! how dare she say that! we KNOW its not true!" "anyone who likes break me or serve the ego has horrible taste in music" I also find it funny that everyone complains about Derrick, other people send 10 one liners in a row, in a time span of 3 minutes, or post WAY more often than derrick does. >I don't know why you feel so compelled to dominate discussion on this list~ >at times a reader would think it's the Derrick news and discussion board >(with a subdirectory for Michelle Branch); Also, so what the Derrick likes Michelle Branch? So what that he makes comments about her music, and seeing her? I know of plenty other EDAs who like Michelle Branch. Oh I get it... Thi is a JEWEL list... and a majority of people on this list only like JEWEL, and they don't listen to other music right? So we can't comment on other arists because it might offend Jewel's loyal fans who only listen to her? and because they're competing w/ Jewel for record sales... am i correct? Just want to make sure I understand.... because if being a fan of Jewel, and being on a Jewel mailing list means that I can only listen to Jewel, and can't make any reference to any other music talent... I don't know if I want to be a fan of Jewel. I don't want to limit myself to liking one artist. >hopefully, one day it will return to a broader based >discussion forum, for folks who don't want, or need to be, the centre of >attention. haha... this is funny too. You know, if you (and other people) will stop posting about "derrick has a big ego, he's a negative jerk, and he likes being in the center of attention" you know what? he won't be in the center of attention... haha, its finny how you say that. its not derrick who brings attention to himself, but everyone else posting about how much they hate him, (or his opinions). y'all are the ones who bring attention to him. As for your analysis. I couldn't agree more with all of it. =; However, your conclusions are, in my oppinion, completly missing the= point of two of the only redeeming songs on the album. I person=ally believe the contradictions in these songs are intentional for effect.&=nbsp; As you know, in literature when things (or devices) are repeated= it's usually to point out it's significance. To quote Jewel fro=m some other song: "Love is not a rational thing." I t=hink she is trying to capture the rapture (forgive me for amusing myself) o=f the irrationality of 'love.' If I may reference Ayn Rand, it's= "man worship" that she is describing. I personally th=ink it is a fleeting and 'cheesy' phenominon. I pe=rsonally hope for the sake of her music that her a Ty break up. =(Before anyone mentions how selfish that is, remember I evolked Ayn. &=nbsp;Be careful not to 'serve my ego.') ;) You go on to mentions 'love cliches,' and I agree again. Love is= one giant cliche. Again, except to those who believe they are i=n it, if you will. You want to talk about cliche's, what about all these PC spoutings about wo=men not subjegating themselves. I would agree with you on your s=ocietal observations. However, I believe it is hyporcritical to =look down, or for that matter judge at all a woman's right to subjegate her=self to a man, if your going to talk about women's rights at all. &nbs=p;As silly as it is, and as much as I wouldn't tell a girl I cared about to= do it, isn't that the relationship we are all fooling ourselves that we're= looking for? Mutual worship. I'll be the first to admit that I was not as articulate as I would have lik=e to have been. I know if I get into a battle of words, I will l=ose.
