All of this > 'she doesn't think she's very good' stuff sounds silly. Sure, she's not > the best guitarist, but she plays well and does it all the time in > concert. > "Pieces Of You" is easily her best album and certainly sold the most. > Someone needs to remind her of that. > I totally disagree that Pieces of You is her best album. Everyone on this list seems to love it... but Pieces of You, in my opinion, is a good FIRST record, shows a lot of potential, and has 3 or 4 remarkable songs with a bunch a couple of seriously AWFUL songs and a few filler type of songs in between. In other words - it's not THAT great. The only songs I still listen to on Pieces of You are Foolish Games (the album version), Painters, and Amen.. and sometimes Who Will Save Your Soul and Angel Standing By... but barely ever. Spirit isn't nearly as good as Pieces of You because it's similar songs, badly produced, without the same sense of raw emotion as Pieces of You.. had Spirit been recorded in the way Pieces of You was recorded it probably would've been a LOT better... but This Way is better than Pieces of You all around. The songwriting is (for the most part) better. There's less naivity and cringe-worthy lyrics. There's nothing quite as unusual or interesting as Painters, and nothing as raw and emotional as Amen (but that's my favourite Jewel song of all time so it's hard to beat that one)... but overall it's a better album. Those two individual songs on Pieces could be argued to be better than most of This Way (except maybe The New Wild West).. but an album is the sum of it's parts, not two songs. Besides, Pieces sold so many copies because it had three hit singles, two of which were re-recorded to be just as produced as many of the songs on Spirit and This Way (particularly Foolish Games). I don't think it has anything to do with Pieces of You being all-acoustic and raw and undone.. and it CERTAINLY has NOTHING to do with her guitar playing (which you have to admit wasn't great). I don't see anything wrong with her letting somebody else play guitar on the record. It certainly gives us a better product as far as guitar playing is concerned (and I really like a lot of the acoustic guitar playing on This Way)... hopefully when she gets more experienced on the guitar she'll be more confident to play on the records. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2001 15:49:31 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] from RollingStone.com A nice little comment about Jewel from RollingStone.com about the Vh1 My Music Awards: Other performers included Nelly Furtado, effervescent if pitch-y in delivering "Turn Off the Light" and Jewel, who sang a sedentary song -- "Standing Still" -- beautifully. "One of the things I struggle with all the time in my job is not being able to have direct contact with who I'm making music for," Jewel said. "It always has to go through the channels, and it gets diluted. You can't really get honest feedback. So the thing I like about [the My Music Awards] is you can actually have direct contact with fans without going through a journalist or anyone else." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2001 16:02:55 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: NJC: Re: [EDA] NJC: odd occurence To all list members, I sent this to the list because *onlist* Derrick irrationally questioned....well, I can't explain it because he must seem to think I do this EDA-thing all day long, which is ludicrous.....read on. If you do not care, please delete now. However, if you read his post with the subject "NJC: odd occurance" and thought it had any merit and too questioned how I do things, I hope you do read on. Derrick again wasted my time by writing: >I sent a reply to an EDA and the list earlier this morning, just before the >other post arrived that everyone saw from me, called "thanks Heather". >However, that other post never made it through. It contained no hot topic >words, unlike one we received this morning from another EDA, that somehow >DID get through ( I still don't know how. I'd like to know why my reply >hasn't made it through yet? And if this is a representation of the >moderation that is going on behind the scenes? How many other posts do we >never see? Makes one wonder. Newsflash Derrick! It's because I, the list owner DO NOT DO THIS 24 HOURS A DAY!!!!!! I get out of the house once in a while, you know...work, buy groceries, shop for Christmas (which is what I was doing since my last email to you this morning), walk the dog, enjoy the weather. All sorts of things. Please, stop expecting instant replies from me in regard to your private emails to me and then get impatient when a reply or answer does not come soon enough for you and make a list post questioning things I do that are WAY off the mark. The simple answer is, your post hit some other taboo and was sent on (approved) a few minutes ago. I do not and will not explain it nor the reason to you or anyone else what the taboo is. I said in my post last night that a VAST majority of the bounced posts make it through. Thing is, sometimes it might be a few hours or half a day. Deal with it, and please stop wasting my time by doing something that forces me to take the time to set right something you did. Jewel, who performed her song "Standing Still," at the show, remarked backstage about the impact the Beatles had on her: "What I appreciated about the Beatles was there was a lot of whimsy and a great sense of humor in their music, and that came from a love of [the music] not from trying to make hits." scott.evans [[mind is DISCONNECTED. but my heart is WIRED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . And I'm not talking about fudging little details or whatever.. I'm talking about flat out lies. Anyone?
