VH1 right, you show 'em girl... go on with your bad self!... never underestimate the power of the cleavage... she has nice t's.. But why oh why does she still get shy when she performs on tv shows? she's so cool and natural when she's live... I know, let's call Tony Robins and do a number on her...she sang great and I loved the whole background stage thing..it looked awesome! but she didn't let go , you know? like you could tell she was a little bit uptight.. night Uri ps: Nelly Furtado, great! shows you how hard it's to move around and sing without lip-synching , she tried , but it's impossible to do both things.. that's why Britney doesn't sing live. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 22:44:06 -0500 From: "Sheila56" Subject: [EDA] vh1!!! So even Mike himself >realizes this topic is a controversial one. I'll just say it rhymes with "a >portion". :-) The topic of abortion has long been tabooed on this list for obvious reasons, or reasons that should be obvious anyway. Most people are VERY passionate about their views on this topic and I cannot allow discussion of it on this list as it will ALWAYS get out of hand. Even though Jewel mentions the topic in one of her songs on This Way, it is not a license to openly discuss the issue here. Mentioning the topic/word in passing in relation to its' inclusion in the song will USUALLY be fine, but any such post will be held up for approval/disapproval. If I feel it has a likelihood to induce discussion of the topic (which will likely turn heated), I will not be able to let it though. Sorry, but that's the way it has got to be. Please, do NOT try to circumvent this policy by trying to sneak a post by intentional mispellings, codes or rhymings etc. It only shows that you KNOW you are doing what is against list policy and THAT get's me mad (and I do not want to be mad at all during the holiday season) Mike - EDA list "owner" P.S. This does NOT mean the list is moderated. It is not. It means it has some topics that are not allowed for various good reasons and posts relating to those will likely be nabbed by the listserve software to be held up to be approved/disapproved. A VAST majority of the posts sent in get through unabated, a scant few each day get held up. Subject: RE: [EDA] VH1 awards I agree...there was very little memorable about Jewel's performance...well, except her chest. Look for more appearances of it in upcoming issues of tabloid magazines. :-) I think New Wild West is going to be the next single...based on what she said in the music connection mag interview. Of course she's been known to stray from the truth before, so I guess we really won't know until it's out. My vote is for Serve the Ego though...I sure hope that's a single at some point. - -----Original Message----- From: Maggsleys@aol.com To: jewel@smoe.org Sent: 12/2/01 9:01 PM Subject: Re: [EDA] VH1 awards Hmmm, if i had watched that, not having Jewel's CD and not having watched any of her other performances, i'd forget about it a few seconds later. I'm not saying she should've done crazy gimmicks to be more flashy (no 50 baby oiled dancers for her!) but I wish it could've been a bit more memorable. Maybe this is just my prejudice against Standing Still showing through... In the back of my mind i was hoping she'd say "I was supposed to sing Standing Still, but recent events make me want to sing this instead" and then sing "The New Wild West." Oh well. Still letting myself hope that is the next single, that or Serve the Ego just to see what the video would look like! It would be awesome, no? Shane---The Yoga Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 22:48:19 EST From: ChrissyPf1@aol.com Subject: [EDA] VH1 I'm a little dissapointed in the performance tonight. I felt like she was off key a little at certain parts-- and she really wasn't into it-- I also was hoping for something (anything) other than standing still-- which I like, but is not her best live song. I have to agree with Derrick on one point he has been making-- she should do something different with her hair. Appearances aren't really that important-- but I just don't think that this new look is flattering for her. I went back through some old tapes and saw that Politically incorrect show from last year-- and she did look beautiful-- I know that she is trying to look moe edgy in an "I don't care" sort of way-- but I'm not feeling it-- it looks a little greasy and knotty. Anyway I know that was a lot about her hair-- and I know some people get mad when we talk about her appearance, but I've been thinking it for a while and I thought I'd just throw my opinion out there. I'm not feeling this new band either-- The electric guitar was way too loud-- It kept sounding like the song was going to end early-- I know Jewel is an aweome live performer-- but it didn't really show tonight-- I think her best live performance of SS was on the Garth Brooks special. While I was looking back at old tapes I remembered how great she can be n TV-- (unplugged, hard rock, story-tellers) I just haven't been feeling it lately-- I love the new album-- I hope that she releases New Wild West next to remind people what a great artist she is, and she's passionate about that song, maybe that will help her live performances. I know that a lot of you seemed to like the show tonight- I'm glad to see her-- but I know that she's got more energy and passion to share-- we've all seen it-- like in Nashville-- that's what I want to see-- - -- Chrissy PS-- she said that she surfs the net-- maybe she does check us out sometimes :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 22:50:16 EST From: ChrissyPf1@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Old Kilborn When I was watching some old performances-- I saw that old Kilborn show where she was asked 5 questions-- She did sing that night! So musical guests can get the 5 questions, although she didn't this week. - -- Chrissy PS-- Her 5th question was will you sing for us? and she sang What's Simple is True. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 22:52:53 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Guitar Thing Hey Jewel played guitar on two tracks of Spirit - Enter from the East and Fat Boy. I think that's because those tracks were recorded as kind of acoustic versions (much like the last 2 tracks on This Way), and therefore it made sense for her to play. The rest of Spirit's acoustic guitar was done mainly by Jude Cole. I think Jewel refrains from playing guitar for the most part on her records because she doesn't think she's a very good guitar player. She wants to instruments to sound as good as possible on the records, and she doesn't think her skills are worthy. Definitely the guitar playing on Spirit and This Way is much better now than it would be if Jewel was doing it, although she's not a bad guitar playing - particulary for quite, kind of intricate stuff that she does in the acoustic songs. Although it's still in question as to whether she played guitar on This Way. You'll notice that some songs don't list an acoustic guitar in the credits when there is clearly an acoustic guitar in the song (ie - LMJLMA)... so maybe they left out every instrument jewel played simply assuming people would assume (notice that none of the songs give vocal credits to Jewel, although obviously she sings in all of them... and in the credits for the two live tracks no acoustic guitar credit was given although obviously she played acoustic guitar on both). So yeah.. it's very much in question. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 22:57:51 EST From: ChrissyPf1@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Sorry three posts in 10 minutes! Oh -- by the way the comments I made about Jewel's hair-- I was talking about from all of her recent appearances-- not just tonight-- because while is was messy tonight-- it wasn't as bad as Friday on Kilborn-- Are there a lot of No Doubt fans here? I know that she wanted to use the vocal takes that she did with the band in the studio (rather than re-doing them afterwards in a booth). If you play guitar AND sing in a band song the vocal takes tend to be less good because you're concentrating on the guitar as well and it's just not as strong (also you're bobbing up and down with the guitar and that can kind of screw up a vocal take in terms of singing into the mic and stuff). I know that the reason a lot of lead singers of bands (who do play lead guitar as well) redo their vocal takes in the booth afterwards is to get them sounding perfect, because when they were playing the song they weren't fully focusing on the vocals. Now Jewel didn't want to do her vocal takes in a booth, so it's possible that she opted out of playing instruments so that she could sing live with the band while they layed down the instrumental part of the track. That could be why she didn't play guitar. But I still think it's because she doesn't think she's a good guitar player. You have some serious issues with your tastes in music and your views on women in general. Put those 3 things together, what do you think? Dang, I'm sitting here tryin to figure out what in tarnation Mr. Hooks means by the the above paragraph. Just this afternoon I was watching the great Shakira video (WooHoooo! Gotta love that woman!) and I told my girl to get me a beer, like right quick. Well, to make a long story short, the beer a little warmer than I like, and the Shakeera (That's what I like to call her.)video ended, so I slapped her around a bit. Nuthin rough, but I did get a little mascara all over my new wife-beater. Man, that woman just don't get it. So right now I'm trying to calm down a bit by listening to my two favorite tracks from 'This Way'. You know, 'Break Me' and 'Serve the Ego'. Ain't nuthin wrong with my taste in music, so I just don't know what Ms. Hooks is talkin about. He must be one of those there sensitive males from the 90's with a broken calendar.
