(yes, thats the story she wrote about in chasing down the dawn, but she didnt know he was drunk...) yeah, i could smell him, they pulled him out of the crowd after he started crying out of control over jewel... it was very strange to say the least. if only jewel could know he was so messed up. they took him away during foolish games and jewel gave him a really sad look. at first she told them to leave him alone, but he got way out of control when he kept screaming and crying. i think he was on some drugs. jewel was so distracted she had to start foolish games over 3 times. my point... JEWEL HAS SHITTY DAYS!!! GET OVER IT!!! that shitty mood moment i saw of jewel only made me respect her even more... she doesnt hide behind fame... she doesnt care if shes on conan, she doesnt have to be bright and cheery all the time!! Selling Out-- I define a sell out in the music business as someone who makes their music concentrating on how much it well sell, not on how good the music is. I really don't have a lot of respect for those artists who are basically glorified marketing tools; they're the fast food of the music industry. I think Jewel generally concentrates on writing good songs, but sometimes the versions on the CD are produced in such a way as to be accessible and buyable, not in such a way as to make it a quality version of the song. It's cool for Jewel to gain exposure through the Gap, because then more people will buy the CD and then be benefited by her music, etc., etc. However, it does worry me because it seems that the more artists get involved with big corporations like the Gap, the more control these corporations have over them, and the less freedom this artist now has. There has to be a balance: artists want to expose their music to many people, yet at what point does their music become not worth exposing? I'd like to see Jewel become increasingly free to experiment musically as her career matures, and doing a Gap ad just isn't really an indicator of that. Star's Responsibility to Fans-- Well, many are saying that the star owes it to the fan, because the fan is buying their CD. Stars fulfill whatever responsibility they have by creating the music. Isn't that the trade in buying a CD? Money for music. Not money for music and the guarantee the star will give me autographs and pictures if we meet and be completely sweet to me no matter what her mood happens to be. Once we start buying Jewel's CDs and realize they're blank, or not very good musically, then we have the right to complain. And then there's the point that stars know what they are getting into with the whole fame thing, and therefore should accept it all with open arms and a smiling face. This seems ridiculous to me. Every job has ups and downs and almost every person, unless they happen to be extremely enlightened, celebrates the perks and complains about the drawbacks. In stardom it's a bit more extreme with amazing perks and some pretty awful drawbacks. Obviously it's a hard life for Jewel, which is exactly why she did take some time off, like many were saying she should if she didn't like it. No one can say she doesn't appreciate her luck; she is always thanking everyone and saying how grateful she is. But she still has as much right as any other person to complain and even be bitchy about the horrible aspects of her job. Common Jewel Phrases-- I think the most blatant has got to be on Spirit. "Inside my heart there's an empty room. It's waiting for lightning. It's waiting for you." (Absence of Fear) "My heart has four empty rooms. Three wait for lightning and one waits for you." (Enter From the East) Also on Spirit the phrase Fragile Flame shows up in Innocence Maintained and Fat Boy. On This Way we have disco, deity, neon, gold dust, barbed wire. Lots of common themes, which is one of Jewel's odd quirks. I never see that in other artists quite as much. I could keep writing forever, but i think you've all had enough of my ranting. Hope i contributed something valuable to these discussions though! Wonderful wishes to all of you, especially Barry! Maggie "The tears of the world are a constant quantity.
