The first single from the album, Standing Still, presents her as the tough-as-nails girl with an irrepressible spirit, sweet soul and soothing voice. Jesus Loves You is a cheeky insight into the Christian faith and Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime is a catchy bit of country rock. Serve the Ego uses congas, triangle pings and craftily worded lyrics to prove Jewel's flair for writing is still on song, while the track Break Me is one of the delicate and sentimental acoustic ballads on the album. She remains at the top of her tree. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 21:48:39 -0500 From: "Bob Hedman" Subject: [EDA] Jewel on tv and calendar Hi Angels, Can someone please tell me why several Jewel appearances have not be released. I know for a fact, two times within the past week Jewel was on tv and people have just happened across it. Is that difficult to release this info so we (her fans) may actually get a chance to see her. The first appearance I happened to come upon, she sang the national anthem on 11/25/01 the PBR World Championship on NBC and now the Rockefeller Tree Lighting. Is it just complete incompetence or are there legitimate reasons these appearances have not been mentioned before they happen? The Jewel Team, MUST be aware of her appearances! Perhaps if they had Jewel fans working for Jewel, they would realize that others would like to know this information. I am VERY FRUSTRATED now that I know I missed Jewel... again! Right now it is around 55 degrees at 11:30 pm. I'm definately not complaining because I hate the cold and snow. I'm a Senior in high school, and in the past we usually got out of school for 2 weeks or so and had to make up the days at the end of the year. I'm really hoping that it doesn't snow anytime soon so we will get out when we're suppossed to, ya know. First off, do we "Really" know what happened? Do we know if she said it in a sarcastic tone, and that's if she even said it at all? The situation "could" have been that she was overheard talking about a different subject, or she could have just been "having a bad day." It happens to everybody. Does anyone remember the beginning of the non-album version of "I'm Sensitive" when she told someone "Shut up, I'm talking?" Just hearing that you would assume she was a bitch, but then when you hear the rest she laughs and says she was kidding. Another scenario is "what do we really know about the relationship between her and that DJ?" What if he was just being a pain in the ass all day and wouldn't leave her alone until finally she just had enough of him? I wouldn't blame her then. Also, do we listen to this DJ all the time and at every moment. It could be possible he was slanderous towards Jewel at some point and it got back to her. The point being there are so many possible scenarios that we don't know what happened. There is a simple term called "context." I hear so many stories every day about how mean spirited celebrities and we believe every word of it. And why? Because it's more interesting that way. Just look how much dialogue Jewel created with the list when she, presumably, made those comments. Also, DJ's need crap that's controversial or else they would be dull, just look at Howard Stern who makes a living off of bashing celebrities. People want to hear it to either be angry or get a good laugh, either way it draws emotion and ratings. My bottom line is, whether she said it or not "I don't care." I'm not a fan of Jewel's because of what she has to say in her personal life, I'm a fan because of what she has to say in her professional life. We need to stop putting her on such a high pedestal and expect her to be Mother Teresa and solve world hunger. She's human and probably under a lot of stress right now. I know I would be with her hectic lifestyle. I would probably tell everybody to go to hell three times on Sunday. Think about it this way (I always say that). Why didn't anyone give the Sex Pistols any grief when their lead man was a rude son of a bitch? Because it was expected. Can anyone tell me they liked Oasis because Liam Gallagher was a "stand up guy with high moral fibers?" Or why is it when Tina Turner or Stevie Nicks act bitchy it's considered "stylish" and their making a feminine statement about how they expect to be treated. So one last note before I go. I consider myself a nice guy and nice to just about everybody, that deserves it that is. So I say to all of you in my most soothing, calmest, nice guy voice and tone "Go to hell" :) But only because I like you. Keith (the go to hell angel) "Having my picture in a magazine makes me special, how special are you" b Jewel "Jesus Loves You" (What a bitch for her to say something like that . . . right?) I just want to make a point of it. THE > ARTIST KNOWS THIS WILL HAPPEN BEFORE HAND! They know what they are getting > themselves into. but do they really? come on now, I'm sure everyone of them *thinks* they can handle it... they probably think it'll be fun to be recognized, and they'll always have time for fans, and it's worth it for the fame/money/experience, but then reality hits when they actually have to put up with it 24/7, and it's absolutely much worse then they ever thought.... I mean like most people, I often think I'd like to be famous...but would I think ahead of time that if I decide to go to the deli to get a chicken in butt-crap nowhere, that I'm going to be mobbed by fans? and how much that will irritate me? probably not, because I'd be too busy thinking of all the good things like fame and money to think about how it will really affect my life and how I'll actually have to deal with every single hour or every single day.... so yes, logically, they have every idea of how fame is going to make them a public spectacle, but it doesn't really sink in that it's a permanent thing, and that they can't just take a break from it without completely altering their life.... ~ Sandy ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #627 ***************************
