Like, would it be fair for someone to send a mint Save the Linoleum to someone, only to receive back a used Spirit from another? I don't call that a fair swap. Most items can be assigned some dollar value, whether it's based on an actual price tag or what the "going rate" is for that item...or how rare, or not rare the materials are that it's made of, etc. There are ways. > ---------- > From: andrea rotter[SMTP:dradra154@hotmail.com] > Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2001 5:41 PM > To: dkaracos@UTMB.EDU; jewel@smoe.org > Subject: Re: [EDA] gift exchange > > it's a white elephant gift exchange you stupid head!(look you can make fun > my immature language woop!) you are suppose to give something you already > have, something tacky, sitting around :) > > > > > > > 'Dra > > "So sing it with me ladies, there's no need to be afraid. I did this a couple years ago but didn't seem to get many replys. So i'm giving it another shot. Anyone who is talented out there... I'm making an EDA page that will have edas either playing an instrument, or singing. And they could be singing covers, or original material. DOESN'T HAVE TO BE JEWEL. So if anyone wants to participate and would like to be on my site, please, if you have any files of yourself on your computer, let me know and maybe you could email 'em to me. If those who have signed up, or want to sign up want to set a limit, that is fine, and we can, but personally I do not see the reason. If you send someone a rare promo item, or something of great value, then: 1: you are stupid (if expecting something of the same back) or 2. You are a generous person who gives freely, and does not let the "me" factor dictate what you give others. The idea behind this is a more light hearted exchange, something to have fun with... I might send a bunch of angelfood, or I might send a weeks worth of lint harvested from the trap in my dryer. Maybe a Life Uncommon video along with pics from EDA gatherings with stories, or maybe fifty-nine ketcup packets from Burger King.. Maybe an old book I have read, or maybe five blank tapes, a book of stamps, some envelops and a list of angelfood to look for from other edas.... Just have fun with it, and if you're worried about seeing a poor return on your gift-investment, then do not join, or do not send some rare, expensive gift... time for bed, Rowdy Ps if Mykle(sp?) was around to be a part of this, would he wonder if he would get something of equal value back? >From: "andrea rotter" >To: cymbaline@bestnetpc.com, jewel@smoe.org >Subject: Re: [EDA] gift exchange >Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 18:56:04 -0500 > >true...BUT... how can you place a dollar $$ amount on a 1/2 eaten >sandwich with EDA spit on it..to me that's price less! and Dereck know's >I'm just giving him a hard time because I can :) > >'Dra > >"So sing it with me ladies, theres no need to be afraid. I am curious as to your opinion, as well as the list's opinion as to what a "sell-out" is in your book. I would think that any event that makes an artist money is doing just that; making them money, which, no matter how much they love the music, is one of the main reasons they are making music in the first place. Period. So, if making Gap commercials for an large sum of cash, that also puts you in the vast public eye unlike appearances on MTV or other niche audience shows would, is "selling out" then I'd say more power to them. What's wrong with them spreading their coverage and getting recognition to an audience that might not have noticed them in the first place? Also, I have never believed that contributing to mainstream venues is "selling out" as what isn't mainstream anymore? That's a good question for you, actually. What do you NOT consider "selling out?" Certainly, if you think Jewel doing a Gap commercial is "selling out" then singing for a very commercialized ball game is "selling out" as well as playing large venues that all of the "pop" bands play, oh and having a record label that isn't a well-kept secret.... Just asking for thoughts... I don't even really believe in the concept of "selling out" anymore. It's nice and highminded to romanticize artists, but as the last person said, it all boils down to money. I've never actually run out to buy something from anyone that I've seen in a TV commercial, but it may be that way for some people so what the hell. I think as long as the artist is making the kind of music they're good at, and that I like, then whatever other activities they do is none of my business. I could care less really. And if I don't like the artist to begin with, the lack of caring is invisible on my radar it's so low. It was said that the Sex Pistols sold out when they signed to a major label. Well, as John Lydon has said, they wanted people to hear them. Selling out? Isn't that what we all have to do at some point? "Bohemian until graduation" indeed. :-) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #620 ***************************
