The reviews in the UK have been quite bad - - one guy said that she has turned into Sylvia Plath, and that the new album was just mellow junk. But I say go and buy it. The best song is probably the first single "That Day" ( although is was co-written by... oh no - Patrick Leonard!). The CD single is great with some cool media content and unreleased songs. I can pick it up for anyone who wants me to send to them... I just don't see that occuring. Although I wish it would. I think we'll be doing good to get 3 or 4 solo acoustic songs each night. How many did she do on the last tour? Anyone remember? I only recall maybe 2 or 3 per night max. She opened with Near You Always often...and I think there was maybe one or two others she interchanged depending on the night. I mean totally acoustic. A couple others were sort of borderline...thin instrumentation maybe. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2001 09:22:06 -0800 (PST) From: Joe Eggleston Subject: [EDA] EDA -- NJC White Elephant Aye, Rowdy, I'm for wantin your idea to come about! It's always been encouraged in the past as it's a way to bring everyone closer and allow those without angelfood, or with very little, to add to their collection. Tape trees aren't forbidden! LOL :-) Now if someone were going to try to tree an authorized copyrighted item, then that's different. As that would then cause Jewel to receive less royalties from her sales. > ---------- > From: Kristie Biggs[SMTP:KristieBiggs@bankunited.com] > Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 11:33 AM > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: Re: [EDA] tape tree idea > > Didn't we all get in trouble the last time we mentioned doing a tape tree? > > >>> "Karacostas, Derrick W." 11/26/2001 11:33:04 AM > >>> > Rather than the secret santa approach to the holiday activities, I think a > simple tape tree would be more practical, and would reach more people most > likely. Whoa, multiple posts from me in one day. Scary stuff. Why? I have listened to mostly folk and what's known as filk for years, Society for Creative Anachronism musicians, medieval compositions, Chinese folk and chamber music, etc. I generally prefer it because it is rougher-sounding (the folk & filk at least) and lyrically sometimes simple but very honest and, well, it just rings true for me. Jewel's voice gave me chills once I got past YWMFM and heard some other stuff on POY, especially the live tracks. Then the words that this incredible voice was delivering, the thought process behind this person's pretty eyes, really hooked me. Notice I say "behind the pretty eyes" because I tend to pay more attention to substance than appearance and an ugly Jewel would still be beloved in my eyes. I didn't dislike Spirit all that much, simply because I enjoyed the lyrics immensely. So a bunch of people whom, I had hoped, all felt somewhat the same way, who gave of their time, sweat, tears (let's hope no blood), and perhaps even cash to bring about changes in the world for the good, that drew me to the list. Time has partly vindicated my assumptions about you - er, us. Thank you. Joe "'A man of violence will die a violent death.' Gap ads. I don't care how "cool" a TV spot is, hell, I gotta admit that mini-cover of Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit" is catchy, but appearing on a Gap as is one word - SELLOUT. It's sad and pathetic. Period. Jewel selling clothes to preppy kids to make money for a multi-million dollar corporation, no thank you. And yes, it is a hard mantle to keep. In the last 40 or 50 years of rock and pop music there are VERY few artists who should be applauded for their strength of character and choice NOT to sellout. Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Tom Waits. That's about it. I'm not counting younger artists because they haven't really been around long enough. Feel free to mention someone I my have missed. But nothing is sadder or more pathetic than hearing a truly great song accompanying some freakin' commercial. The word "angelfood" is really just our list's little code for bootlegs. Would I rather see them traded than sold on a list of this type, sure. But to say that people should not be allowed to sell Jewel bootlegs here makes no sense to me. We're the market for rare stuff. If someone has something that is truly rare, and they want to sell it instead of trade it, I can't make them trade it. Hell, I'd pay good money for a Jewelstock Tape 4, that Michigan show from '96 where she does "House of the Rising Sun"(yes I'm still looking for this show damnit, it's a personal quest of mine that I post about from time to time). Bad taste on the list. I'll address this mostly to that Derrick Karacostas guy who posts all the time. Natalie Imbruglia's new album is not a "long awaited follow," she's a one-hit wonder already peppering those Best of the '90s CDs. Michelle Branch is teen pop with a guitar. You've talked about your fandom of bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit, guy, that whole rap-metal hybrid thing stopped being original about ten years ago. The Judgment Night soundtrack, sure. The first Rage Against the Machine album, of course. But this new meathead fratboy rock is crap. And you even went so far as to mention that you're a fan of Creed. Creed! Mother f'in' Creed?!?!?! Is there a more corporate, sellout, cheesy ass mainstream band than Creed? Hell I'll give Scott Stapp props for making it out of an oppressive household to stardom, but their music is gar-bage. Yech. In general, it would be nice to hear more talk of Jewel in the tradition of Liz Phair, who you mentioned but only to say she still "looks hot" or Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez or even contemporaries like Dar Williams and Lucinda Williams. That's just not a very nice thing to do. No one on this list should ever have to pay for something that many others have already received for free...that's the bottom line. > Bad taste on the list. Evidently you haven't taken the time to research this much though. But I'm sure once she has 3 or 4 more hit singles, you'll just come up with some other new lame excuse to back up your supposed theory. > Michelle Branch is teen pop with a guitar. You've talked about your fandom > of bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit, guy, that whole rap-metal > hybrid thing stopped being original about ten years ago. > Have you seen her live? If not, then you're displaying ignorance. And Sean, I never once said I even liked bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. I don't even own any of their CD's. About the only reference I think I made once regarding them is that it would be funny if we all heard Serve the Ego on the radio sandwiched between songs from bands like that. That's all I said. And by the way, I am a Faith No More fan...you know, that rap-metal band that was around in the late 80's and early 90's? So I don't need someone telling me things that I already know. Did you have a bad night or something? :-) And while I don't own any Rage CD's, I also like some of their earlier songs as well. > But this new meathead fratboy rock is crap.
