Jewel is NEVER better than when it's just her, alone on stage with her guitar and a microphone. That is when Jewel is the greatest pop singer alive. With bands it's always great, but a lot more hit and miss, and never (in my opinion) as marvelous as her solo performances. np: Jewel "This Way" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Nov 2001 19:42:56 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Why should Jewel be sick of playing 'Standing Still' all ready? I just joined this past week so if it's all ready been discussed I didn't see it. Has this song been performed on the last tour? I mean, she hasn't done so many promo appearances as to wear the song out has she? As I said before...she played 'Foolish Games' on every tv and concert stage known to man for a few years. I can't help but think of us in comparison...most people work at jobs and/or careers doing virtually the same thing day after day after month after year...so wouldn't it be a bit self-absorbed and precious to tire of a song after a few months or so? I would hope thats not it...unless she never wanted the song released in the first place but faced record company pressure. I'd just like some background and rationale as to why anyone would guess she's tired of playing the song. Thanks! :-) Sean ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Nov 2001 17:58:21 -0800 (PST) From: Mirko Serkovic Subject: [EDA] re: imagine this Hi! I wrote to MrBB regarding this and he said that Jewel put the band together three weeks ago for the promotional phase.. but the concert touring phase is still five months away and that she still has plenty of time to determine the actual lineup of the concert band between now and then - so i think it's safe to say that this is definitely not the "final band"... whether or not she uses any of it's members is yet to be seen I suppose. I've never seen so much pure speculation based on literally 30 seconds of television footage. I know that if somebody watched my body language and movements for 30 seconds they could get a whole bunch of weird shit out of it that's totally out of context and irrelevant. Frankly, if Jewel was gonna have "words" with Conan I doubt she'd do it on the air in front of two other guests... that would be extremely unclassy and in very poor taste... And besides that, she didn't look like she was having "words" with him in the first place.. it looked perfectly civilized from what I could see. I think the only thing we can infer from the whole performance is that she was tired and would rather have been somewhere else - understandably. The rest of it is pure speculation and is getting to the point of being ridiculous and just funny. 'Jesus Loves You' is in my opinion the strongest studio cut, but I can't imagine it as a single. Is it a great song? Well, probably not a great one, but a very good one. It would be a commercial mistake for her to drop it at any point on the tour unless the "This Way" cd just dies and she ends up playing shed dates for the faithful, a circumstance I don't imagine happening. As for it being a studio only song, well, a lot of bands (most of them veterans) play far more intricate and complex songs than 'Standing Still' with remarkable aplomb live; look at U2, Asia, Steely Dan, Yes, King Crimson and to a lesser degree REM. All you need is a skilled, proficient band and it falls into place. Maybe Jewel is just discouraged with how the song is being received; maybe she just thinks WE don't like it. That, and her band, might be depressing her right now. Is it necessary to analyze why jewel was in a bad mood, or even IF she was in a bad mood? Is it necessary to determine that she hates singing Standing Still, and that she's uncomfortable in short skirts? (Just for the record she's worn mini skirts many times before and never looked the least bit uncomfortable with herself) We don't know her. We may THINK we do, but in reality we just know a face. a voice. the music. But do we know her deepest thoughts? her innermost feelings at any given moment? Only one person can know what she thinks and feels for sure, and that's HERSELF. Let's please stop trying to psychoanalyze her based on facial expressions or whatever that was shown on 5 minutes of TV. Also, Is it necessary to assume that she's not happy with her new band? Or even be wondering why Steve Poltz isn't playing in her band, and wondering whether or not they're even friends anymore because he's not in her band? I have 2 things to say about *that*... 1)Steve has a singing/songwriting career of his own... he cant just spend the rest of his life being in Jewel's shadow, when he can be pursuing an extremely successful solo career. 2)Her management team most likely decides on a tour band, not Jewel. I'm getting tired of reading post after post "I can tell jewel's not happy with her band. she should find a new band" and "I can tell jewel was in a bad mood." "maybe she had an argument with ty" and "jewel probably was self conscious wearing that short skirt" reading posts like that over and over gets pretty old. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #606 ***************************
