I have to admit, I was wondering why she didn't thank us at first -- but then I thought if she singles us out, maybe she alieanates her other fans -- just an added thought. Also, I am always wondering how many EDA's there are! Hey Mike, if the person who normally tally's our ages and locations isn't available to, maybe I'm up to the challenge! Well, i don't know about anyone else, but after that little slip in the beginning, she looked pissed. I mean, what happened? was her band playing the wrong song? was that a cd playing? b/c they jumped right into standing still. She looked soo mad at first. I liked this performance better than the leno one the other night. I dunno, i dont like this song live. I really like the cd version, but not live. For those who didnt get to watch it, the guy did a short like 4 question interview about the cd and then introduced the song standing still. Suddenly everybody needs someone sometime started playing, she sang the first lik 8 words, then suddenly they played SS. oh well ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2001 10:27:23 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] New Review Hey www.bn.com (barnes and noble) have posted their review of This Way. Here is it: Barnes & Noble Though Jewel trekked to Nashville to record her third album with producer Dan Huff, This Way is not the Alaska native's bid to become the next Faith Hill. Instead, it's the best record of her career, short on precious lyrics and long on muscular twang 'n' roll. This Way displays Jewel's keen observational skills in heartfelt songs about the spiritual price of materialism ("Jesus Loves You"), the uncertain path our society is taking ("The New Wild West"), or just flat-out romantic yearning ("Standing Still"). Despite these weighty concerns, Jewel avoids excessive hand wringing, and she uses the rockin' arrangements to cut loose. The exotic "Serve the Ego" employs finger cymbals, Middle Eastern-flavored vocal phrasing, and racy lyrics about dominance and subservience. And the torchy "I Won't Walk Away" recalls her yearning hit "Foolish Games." Elsewhere, Jewel gives Joan Osborne a run for her money as she howls over the slide-guitar-driven rock of "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone." If it seems that the precocious poet has forgotten her past, a pair of bonus live tracks, "Grey Matter" and "Sometimes It Be That Way," with their simple vocal-guitar arrangements, neatly recall the solid folk roots at the heart of this gem of a singer-songwriter. I don't usually get that Jewel is in pain. I actually get: "Jewel's music sucks, but she has an AMAZING voice" or "She should sing POP with that voice". But I could understand people saying that she sounds like she's in pain in POY and ANGELFOOD TAPES (in songs like WWSYS or other old songs like CAN'T TAKE MY SOUL...) but I LOVE the way she sings them. They couldn't say that about her voice in SPIRIT (it is way too polished). YOU KNOW WHO REALLY SOUNDS LIKE SHE'S IN PAIN???? CHRISTINA AGUILERA!! Christina, although a teenybopper, she has an AMAZING voice! She sings much better than the electronically voiced Britney Spears. Ever see how small Christina is? she's short and very petite. You would not imagine a strong powerful voice coming from such a small person. If I were tied up to a chair and forced to listen to any teenybopper vocalist or group, i'd rather listen to Christina Aguilera over Britney, Mandy Moore (who also can sing), and any of the boybands. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2001 12:20:00 -0500 From: "Mark Street" Subject: [EDA] Re: Hype definition "Hype" Definition from "Slangin From Da Side" Dictionary at http://www.lft.k12.la.us/nhs/content_pages/smonteleon/slangdictonary.html Statements made about something before that thing comes out, especially wild statements guessing about the things nature (whether positive or negative). By Richard Chang A toned down Jewel Jewel Kilcher knows fame, exposure and overexposure well. The pop star who once lived on coffeeshop change in a Volkswagen van has sold more than 20 million albums since her 1995, out-of-nowhere debut, "Pieces of You." She's graced the cover of Time magazine, Rolling Stone (twice), Vogue, People, Glamour, Details, Seventeen and Reader's Digest. She has written two books, including "A Night Without Armor," which has sold more than a million copies - a practically unheard-of figure for poetry. And her face has become a familiar sight on MTV, VH1, on book covers and even in movie posters. "I was talking to Moby one day, and we were saying how there are two kinds of artists," said Jewel, 27, calling from her Rancho Santa Fe home. "There's one kind of artist - they want fame and use music as a vehicle. Then there are those that want music, and fame ends up as a side effect." Jewel, who goes by her first name, said she identifies more with the latter, despite what people might think. The Alaska-raised songstress released her fourth album (if you count her Christmas record), "This Way," on Tuesday. It's her first collection of new, self-penned material since 1998's "Spirit." Recorded in Nashville, "This Way" has a much more polished sound than Jewel's previous albums. The record was produced by Jewel with Dan Huff, who helped make Faith Hill a superstar. Although Jewel plays down the country influence, "This Way" definitely has a countrified sound, with Western riffs and Jewel drawling and twanging about "weren't" being "no spring chicken" in "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime," and "gold dust in your pocket" in "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone." "The New Wild West" is a virtual anthem for 21st-century country. Heck, how could she avoid country when she spent the past two years almost exclusively on the rodeo circuit with boyfriend Ty Murray, a Professional Rodeo Association champion? "By the end of 'Spirit,' (music) began feeling like a job, like drudgery," she said. "I pretty much just quit. It's too fun of a job not to have fun with. There's this feeling out there that if you had hits, you have to have more hits. A lot of artists have this outdoing yourself thing - make it more fabulous, more daring. "I was getting confused about what my calling was. I wasn't sure if I was up for running for mayor every time. I really wanted to make a record that was authentic, raw and underproduced." Over the years, Jewel has received some flak from the critics, who have called her music and poetry simplistic and amateurish. Jewel brushes off the barbs and says she intentionally included earlier, teen-age work in her book "A Night Without Armor," to "show kids the process of writing." "I knew that would really open me up to the critics and those types of things. It's not always the most important thing to put your best foot forward. Famous people always try to put their best self out there. It makes the average person feel frustrated. They don't see the nose job and the rewrite." So what about posing for all those magazine covers? They certainly make Jewel look more glamorous than the average singer-songwriter. "I'm a girl - it's exciting to be on the cover of a magazine," she said. "It's fashion stuff. It's kind of a fun thing to do once in your life. It's not like I try to avoid fame." Jewel made her screen debut in the 1999 Ang Lee film "Ride With the Devil," which did not do well at the box office, but did earn her praise. "The movie (studio) got bought out, a shuffle happened, and the movie wasn't the top priority (for the new owners)," she explained. "If my performance was bad, I'd feel badly. But I can't control what movie houses do. All I can do is try to learn, do the best I could in acting." Jewel said she has been reviewing scripts and will schedule time this summer to do another movie. While she has four concert dates scheduled for the end of the year, Jewel doesn't plan to go on a national tour to promote her new album until February. In the meantime, Jewel's going to keep following her heart and dictating her own career path. "People will give you (crap) for everything you do," she said. "You can't live your life worrying about them. You'll never be able to make a single move. "All you can do is go out there and be yourself and do what you want to do." _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #585 ***************************
