Hello, one and all. I write from New York, shocked at the terrible accident that happened yesterday. I just wanted to pull my hair out--It HAD to be an airplane and it HAD to have people on it and it HAD to fall in a "densely populated area", as I heard a reporter say. Never mind the fact there was a gas station around, which would have meant more hell unleashed. It's so sad. :( Actually, the subject of my email does not refer to that, though it very well could. I'm talking about This Way. Aahhhh!! For all-a youse who got the CD, I'm happy for you. Enjoy it. Show off. Because, you know, I'll have to wait until the weekend (hey, I'm a busy person, kinda sorta). OMG!! Shakira's CD is coming out. She's going to be on Z100 (100.3 FM) at 6 pm, for those of you who live around the NY-NJ-CT tristate area. I'm sooooo excited!! Er, anyway, about Juel. I was kind of wondering. Is Cleveland another title for "You're in Cleveland Today"? Or is it just another song? If it's different I hope it's as good as the latter. That's one of my favorite Juel songs. Anyway, y'all, toodles. ===== ~*Liz*~ the Bronx Angel HARMLESS & SHAMELESS PLUGS (if you can, check 'em out!) I flipped out, rinsed out the herbal essences, put on my robe and called the radio station. "How do I win the new Jewel CD?" I asked.... "be caller #9 when the Deejay asks before 9:00 PM." they responded Ok, I can do that-- it was 8:30 PM. So I'm sitting by the radio... and the song ends and I hear MYSELF on the radio. yeah that's right... it was ME!!! They had taped me asking how to win the CD and used it on air... hahah Believe me, the most bizarre thing is to hear yourself on the radio, unexpectedly. So I listened some more (after screaming about being on the radio) and called when the deejay asked. I was caller #3 :( Didn't win. But I was on the radio!! haha..... I should get something just for that.. geez. I hope you all love This Way! I certainly do---- happy day, oh happy day :) Have a wonderful evening.. and I'm glad to be back ~Rachel~ Check out my LiveJournal at http://www.livejournal.com/~rachkat926/ "How true it is that words are but vague shadows of the volumes we mean." Each of Jewel's CDs have a theme that represents what is going through her mind at the time. Pieces of you is very simplistic, sweet-a bridge between teenage years and adulthood. It shows a widened view of understanding of Jewel herself, the world, and her relationships. Spirit gives a slightly different perspective on life. Her songs show a deeper, yet abstract perception of the world with plenty of symbolism and a heavy mood, as well the gnawing hunger inside of her. This Way shows a lot of mental growth and rich musical growth, with a more mature simplicity than Pieces of You, and the hunger that was represented in Spirit, through her growth, has been fulfilled. 1) Standing Still-The imagery represented in the light, pop/rock music and the words of this song is crystal clear. While the main idea of the song is straight-forward, the lyrics provide its simplicity with richness. It's amusing, beautiful, and uplifting. "Do you want me like I want you, or am I standing still?" 2) Jesus Loves You-The sarcastic lyrics of this folk/rock add character to this song. It starts off very calm and as the song progresses more instruments are added into the song. The lyrics are very a great length as this isn't too wordy of a song as some others Jewel has written. The last question leaves the listener thinking. "They say that Jesus loves you, what about me?" 3) Everybody Needs Someone Sometime-The message of this light rock song is very clear. The two lines in this song about Spivey Leeks come from her poem. It's a light, fun song, yet with such a truthful message. "Everybody needs someone sometime" 4) Break Me-This song is breath-taking. The poetic lyrics fit in perfectly with the slow pace & sullen mood of the song. Although this is a slow song, there is a richness shown in the music that makes the words come alive. "Break me...just let me feel your love again" 5) Do You Want To Play?-This playful rock song was played back in 1999 with some lessons such as "Don't ever give away what you can't take back." It is said to have a reference to Anais Nin..Anyone see it? 6) Till We Run of Road-Written by Jewel & Ty Murray, this beautiful song has a moderate pace and its rich lyrics show the feeling of a cowboy being on the road, traveling with his partner, and all of the questions that are going through his head. "Guess we'll just go Go till we're too old Or we run out of road" 7) Serve the Ego-Creativity and exoticness is shown in this jazzy tune. Jewel's voice fills the song with a heavy, mysterious mood. The lyrics are very similar to Jupiter. The "mmm, mmms" at the end are really adorable. "Serve the ego" 8) This Way-Another beautiful song, asking for a promise instead asking the truth of one, like in Standing Still. The music is very soft and calming. "Say that you'll stay forever this way" 9) Cleveland-A cute country/rock song with some great imagery. "You're in Cleveland today" 10) I Won't Walk Away-The hopeful and promising lyrics in this song fill the listener with hope and contentment. "Others will stray, but I won't walk away." 11) Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone-This 1999 tour song has a creative opening and good build up of instruments. "What's the matter..Does your love need a home? Alright then, Love me, just leave me alone" 12) The New Wild West-The somewhat dull melody of the verse of this song is definately made of for by the insightful lyrics. They greatly relate to what's been happening. "A nation of civilized steeples and lonely people. Welcome to the new wild west." 13) Grey Matter-Always been a great song. It was great to see some old school Jewel in this new CD. It was also nice to hear voices of the audience while listening. "I'm flattered by your grey matter" 14) Sometimes It Be That Way-This is a classic for many Jewel fans. The sarcastic and serious, yet comical lyrics will always be remembered. The picture seems almost symbolic. Since Jewel fans always loved this song and wanted it to be on the CD in the picture she is pointing toward us, like, this one is for you. "Oh well, Sometimes it be that way" This is an amazing CD that clearly shows how Jewel's life, as she explains it herself, is like an "upward spiral". She continues to grow with her thoughts, lyrics, music. The impact of her inspiration on others is strengthened with each step. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #569 ***************************
