I've been hanging out = for this, for oh, about a year and a half now - and damn, it is one = MOTHER of a book (979 pages, trade paperback, ie, it's huge!). I = suppose that'll keep me busy for a while! Oh, but its going to be sooo = worth the wait, i can't wait to curl up in bed tonight and read it. Any = other Diana Gab fans on the list? Just curious. All i want to know is, = where the hell is my Jamie Fraser hmmm? *sigh* .... The second pressie? JEWEL'S NEW ALBUM!!!!!!!! And i got it a whole DAY = early - bonus!! So, as soon as i got home from work tonight, I = practically skipped down the hall to my bedroom singing "I've got = Jewel's new album" in my head (like a little kid or something... lol). = I couldn't contain my exitement - and i did a little dance just before = loading my new baby (This Way) in my cd player. Then i sat down on my = bed with my dinner - pressed play, and listened to the album non-stop = from start to finish - aah, bliss. F**KEN AY this is a good album!!! I'm sorry, but it even beats 'Pieces = of You'! (despite its produced-ness). I can see why it's Jewel's = favourite album so far. And get this Americans - the Australasian = version has THREE live tracks! We get 'A Long Slow Slide' as well - na = na na na na na! And yes, i'm poking my tongue out right now. Geez, i'm = supposed to be 21 years old - i get Jewel's new album, and suddenly i'm = six again - go figure. =20 Being a fan of solo-acoustic Jewel, the live tracks are my fave songs on = the album. It was just so neat to hear SIBTW again, even though the = 'goldilocks, well she knew three bears..." verse is missing. At = Jewelstock in '96 when Jewel said "I think this one (SIBTW) is going on = the album, but you guys will be sick of it by then!", who knew it was = going to take another five years? [the 'album' she was referring to = must have been the never-released "Fritz Creek Store" yeah?]. Grey Matter ... one word - WOW. The acoustics on these live tracks are = amazing, you feel like you're actually at the live performance. And i = know so many people say this, but it's never rang true for me until now = - - listening to the opening lines of Grey Matter gave me chills. I = physically felt a little shiver go through my neck and shoulders and = then run down my back. It was surreal - I can't wait to be at a concert = and hear this song, its been a favorite of mine for a long time, and now = i love it even more. "And I meant every word" - yeah, i know what Jewel = means. But what's with the people laughing in the background? Its a = big contrast - since grey matter is defintely not a funny song... hmm... = someone must have said something amusing - i'd love to know what it was. = Its interesting that Jewels sings the wrong lyrics at one piont (you got = moth holes in your pocket/ you got moth holes in your soul), yet it was = still included on the album. I like that though - it shows the world = that Jewel isn't afraid of her inperfections. But afterall, our = inperfections are what make us human. Of the new songs (new wild west, Jesus loves you, etc), A Long Slow = Slide was the one i loved the most - so i was just stoked to see that it = was track no. 15 on 'This Way'. I've always been a sucker for Jewel's = sad love songs, so i guess it was a give-in that i'd love this one. I = especially love the Bukowski's widow reference, because that poem is my = fave from ANWA. LMJLMA is just awesome. I couldn't wait to hear the Janis Joplin-esque = scream ... but it was so good! I love it. I remember hearing Do You = Want to Play? years ago, but i only listened to it once or twice, and i = could only vaguely recall it before hearing the 'This Way' version. The = original version made me smile, this one makes me want to dance. The = ones i see as future singles are DYWTP? and Till We Run Out of Road. = I'm just in love with Jewel's vocals on TWROOR - they're so pretty, and = so funky at the same time. Serve the Ego, Break Me and The New Wild = West - i much prefer these ones live, they're just not the same on the = album - but still, they're all great songs. Serve the Ego is groovy - = you can dance to it - and you can't dance to that many of Jewel's songs, = so this scores points with me. (I love dancing, can ya tell?) You all have to load This Way into your computers and watch the video = (its an enhanced cd remember?) - its fabulous. Its Jewel fooling around = in the studio during the recording of Break Me - singing, doing stupid = dances, pulling little grins and faces at the camera... it'll make you = smile. Ooh, and its very arty too - a mix of colour, black and white, = and sepia shots - very cool. Well, that was my little review - congrats if you've made it this far = ... i can't write short-anything (short-stories, short text messages, = short emails) to save myself. I was even writing novels in primary = school... lol. I'll leave you in peace now .... This Way Rocks. But then, how could = it not? ;) Stace xxoo =20 [demime 0.97c removed an attachment of type image/gif which had a name of jewelthiswaybanner.gif] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2001 08:18:02 -0500 From: "cymbaline" Subject: [EDA] criticism okay, my view, criticism is alright. but some people go to the absolute extreme when criticizing Jewel. Some people post criticisms for extreme, (like their expecting Jewel to be perfect, release a perfect album to their liking, and when she doesn't that pisses them off) I can't help but come to her defense... which does not mean i worship Jewel... but some people being too hard on her. anyways, for my criticism. I got This Way from my brother this weekend. I don't know where he got it, he said he "has his sources". Anyway, I was listening to it, I like it all mostly, but I REALLY hate what she did w/ LMJLMA.... the beginning absolutely is horrible, I hate the twangy slide guitar and how she sang the first few lines. It does pick up and get better, but then it gets worse... I like the scream, then they "oh baby" fine LIVE... but not for a studio cut. This used to be one of my favorite songs... and I'd hate for someone hearing it for the first time on This Way having no clue what the song used to be like. Then again that's MY opinion... if you think other wise, please say so. Other than that, I pretty much like the whole album, although I liked the DYWTP chorus better when it was just OeeeeO.
