Hi all, I dont know if this has been mentioned before but, Has anyone seen how Pieces of you is being marketed on Q magazine's internet site? -As one of the best miserable albums of all time. I guess any publicity is good publicity and with other miserable artists such as Radiohead, PJ Harvey Nirvana and Pink Floyd there as well it can't be that bad. Funny though, although pieces of you is quite a depressing album as they go, its always made me feel heppy. What does everyone else think? Is PoY miserable. Don't mean to go over old ground or anything, but with only what, 6 days left i might as well ask while i can. take care, Jim ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Nov 2001 13:46:39 -0200 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: [EDA] CDNOW review Less a return to the sound of her breakthrough, 1995's 11-times platinum Pieces of You, than a refinement of her original coffeehouse principles, This Way does for female folkies what the Backstreet Boys' Millennium did for teen pop: It questions the very form by diving headlong even further into it, exposing in the bargain all its facets and limitations. And this time, she finds what she's looking for: a dozen WB-ready theme songs that slay in that charmingly plastic way. Jewel's wordsmithing remains precious and heavy-handed -- and two bonus live tracks, "Grey Matter" and "Sometimes It Be That Way" do little to suggest otherwise -- but she's developed an uncanny ability to blend into her surroundings, and the arrangements by producer Dann Huff boast a radio-ready sparkle, a subtle blending of gauzy rock, pop, and country. Jewel may ponder materialism ("Jesus Loves You"), celebrity ("Serve the Ego"), and bull riding ("Till We Run Out of Road," but she doesn't question a decent melody: She rolls ("Cleveland"), she rocks ("Everybody Needs Someone Sometime"), and even pulls off a foray into quasi-spiritualism ("New Wild West") thanks to swirling violins and hip-hop drums. It sold over 10 million in America. On her second album "Spirit" she had no control and the result was a label fueled record of what they thought Jewel fans would purchase. The logic failed. On album number three "This Way", Jewel has taking back control of her sound and the result is an album that has her personality and passion put back in place. What was so intriguing about the first album was originality and "This Way certainly has both originality and growth. Two tracks in particular "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime" and "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" are adult rock, akin to the sounds of Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge and (dare I say) Janis Joplin in case of "Love Me". Jewel is having fun again on "This Way". While the introduction to the album "Standing Still" has been obviously placed to not ruffle any feathers, the album quickly acquires depth for the singer songwriter. "Jesus Loves You" is a simple acoustic piece that in concert I can hear as a showcase number. "Break Me" is moody but "Do You Want To Play?" is a a much bigger band number with a story. The quieter numbers touch you. "Till We Run Out Of Road" again highlights the lyric by stripping back the sound. This is where Jewel has always been at her best. "Serve The Ego" even gets a bit Eastern although Jewel said in her interview with Undercover that it was just her playing around with sounds. She calls it just cheesy loop on a keyboard. The title track "This Way" targets where she is going with this album and would make a complimentary single to "Standing Still". "Cleveland" and "I Won't Walk Away" are the produced plush band sounds but it is feel of "The New Wild West" where Jewel truly excels. Bonus live tracks "Grey Matter", "Sometimes It Be That Way" and "A Long Slow Ride" highlight her ability to melt with her audience in concert. They make an interesting contrast to the studio component of the album. Fans of her early work that thought she became a little too polished on "Spirit" will find "This Way" a pleasant experience. Hopefully, the stripped back and fun elements of this album will be further expanded on her next album. ET Pop singer-songwriter Jewel has scheduled a slew of personal appearances surrounding the release of her latest album, "This Way." Her itinerary includes stops at radio concerts in Detroit, San Francisco, Hartford, Conn., Miami and New York. She will be backed by her band for most of the performances, but some solo acoustic shows are also planned. Jewel will appear on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Tuesday (11/13). On Wednesday (11/14), she is set to perform at the New York Civil Liberties Union Celebration at New York's Irving Plaza, and the next day in that city, she will be honored at the Rolling Stone Do Something Awards. The singer has also scheduled appearances on MTV's "Total Request Live" (11/15), NBC's "Weekend Today" (11/17), NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" (11/23), "My VH1 Awards" (12/2) and HBO's "Def Poetry Jam" (12/14). On Tuesday, Jewel and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs are scheduled to announce this year's American Music Award nominations in Los Angeles. Three works from Jewel were released on Tuesday: "This Way" (Atlantic), the DVD version of the documentary "Jewel: A Life Uncommon"--which covers the Alaska-born singer's career from her beginnings in San Diego coffeehouses through her Spirit tour in 1999--and the paperback edition of her collection of poems and stories, "Chasing Down the Dawn" (Harper Collins). "This Way," which features the first single "Standing Still," was produced by Jewel and guitarist-producer Dann Huff (Megadeth, Faith Hill). It marks the first time that Jewel has worked as a producer. [Note: The following tour itinerary has been provided by artist and/or tour sources, who verify its accuracy as of 07-Nov-2001. Hello EDAs, (Be careful, approximative english :)) The new sound of the album is definitively commercially oriented and songs like Standing Still are a bit (more ?) fast written with really easy written lyrics that does not really correspond to Jewel past work (except hands). After a - 2nd book, that is not really a good one, - -an audio version, anyone really listen this? - -an a christmas album that, in my opinion is the worst thing she done - -a new album with != bonus versions, aiming fans to boost album sales - -a 'viral marketing' team, asking people to work for jewel, saving lot of money on promotional plan - -plus all the little other things that many people here have noticed the only goal of this seems to be the record company sales rating. So make money, money, money. Jewel already got millions, she would be allowed to take a good break to make a real album. No reply on the list please, there's a lot of people blindly defending Jewel that would deny this and the # of msg / day rate is high in this period and i would like to save mike time.
