During the peak years of "grunge" music in 1995-1996, radio had little interest in a new musician like Jewel. It was extremely difficult to gain the attention of radio programmers, but it was the relentless enthusiasm of Jewel's online fans that accomplished what seemed impossible. The fans' personal crusade of calling radio stations to request "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant For Me" is what made all the difference and allowed Jewel to continue pursuing her dream. With the new album out soon and "Standing Still" gaining momentum on radio, MTV and VH1, it now is a time where your support is more critical than ever. Our new JeweLink Street Team members are already helping us greatly, but when it comes to calling radio stations, Jewel would certainly appreciate everyone's help. Calling your favorite local radio station and requesting "Standing Still" is the single most helpful thing any Jewel fan can do at the moment. Below, we have some radio request lines to assist those of you here in the states and in Australia, who would like to help with radio requests. Thanks and I leave you with this message from Jewel. MrBB Hey everyone, Well, here we are again. Radio wants to like my new single, but it's just too "different" sounding for many urban pop stations. This is where my grassroots army did so well in the past. If we flood them with calls or emails it makes a huge difference. Also, if any of you fans living in Australia want to email or call your local radio stations, that would be great. I love beating the odds! I can't wait for you all to hear the new CD--it's my favorite without a doubt. Thanks to all--I'll be in touch. I was thinking the same thing yesterday....no kidding! But since you already picked that one lets see.......I don't know if anyone knows the song "The Night's Too Long" it's a country song that was never really very popular, but I think Jewel could really make it sound great by adding her own style like she does. The lyrics sound so much like something she would sing! OR....and this is TOTALLY out of left field....there is an old Lizzy Borden song called "Master of Disguise". The lyrics are AWESOME, but I would want her to kind of de-rock and slow down the melody a little. I mean it's great the way it is, but it just wouldn't be right for her to sing metal. Those lyrics also really fit her. Anyway.....good topic whoever chose it! See when this whole Derrick thing blew up, I was sooooo not paying attention, because I'd glimpsed at the profanity and that sent off a red alert sign on my head saying, Okay, people are going to argue (a lot!) now, you shouldn't really read the posts unless they have nothing to do with the subject. But then poor (but wonderful) Mike sends the list the letter about Derrick kicked off ("The tribe has spoken..."), I was wondering what had happened. Wow! He sure didn't know when to stop. I can't believe Mike had to be MEAN about the whole situation (O the horror!) and that even Dennis Harris, the ol' man (hehe) had to be lured out of the cave to say "You can be part of the problem, or you can be part of the solution", which, I believe, was freaking genius. After this, I won't post anything else about Derrick because I want to be part of the solution. There's another phrase I've learned in life-- "There's always a choice". He could have left things alone, or he could have made it worse. We know what choice he made. So poor Derrick could say anything he wants, Cymbie's right. But he shouldn't have gotten carried away with the sarcasm at all. Anyway--I told you guys no one came trick or treating. I'm glad they finally posted a list of numbers, because that makes it a lot easier to call the stations. I SERIOUSLY urge you guys to call if you live in or near those areas listed.. because it makes a HUGE difference. the reason they listed those stations particularly is because they're in highly populated urban centres, so you're essentially getting the most listeners. And stations that have more listeners are valued higher when it comes to determining to Billboard Hot 100 (which is really what she wants to get on). Anyway... I notice that she's already being played quite substantially on a COUPLE of the stations they listed... so a few calls to those stations particularly would probably encourage the program directors to put the song into heavy rotation. Here are those stations: Atlanta, GA.............WSTR 404-741-9400 Miami, FL...............WHYI 866-645-9100 SF-Oakland-San Jose, CA.KZQZ 888-876-0957 The San Fransisco-Oakland-San Jose station is actually her top pop station right now. They bumped her up by 13 spins just this week to 36 spins... so that would definitely be a good bet, because obviously they're responding to the song. The Atlanta station is her 7th best station...she's at 32 spins there this week (no change from last week) and the Miami station is her 17th best station with 27 spins (down three from last week). Right now on those stations she's getting medium rotation (which is like 20-40 spins a week I guess). The idea would be to call enough to get her bumped up to heavy rotations, which would be like 50-80 spins per week or something.. if they're playing the song at the level that they are, it probably won't be that hard to convince them to push it up a notch... or at least i'm assuming... Another station that might be easy to convince in terms of calling is Z100 (New York, NY WHTZ 800-242-0100) be cause Jewel is headlining their annual Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden - so that gives them incentive to play the song and promote her, and therefore sell tickets. They're also a very influencial station and if they put her into heavy rotation that might be an indicator for other stations in urban markets to do so. As far as the other stations, I'm pretty sure she's on the playlists for most of the stations listed (she's getting widespread airplay, it's just not deep enough) - so it's just a matter of convincing those stations that they should increase the number of spins she's getting... which is easier than getting program directors to add the song to the playlist. So this isn't as difficult as it was when Who Will Save Your Soul was struggling. So, as a final note - everyone on this list that can call SHOULD. I know a lot of us don't give a shit if Jewel is on the radio or not, we love her for being her. I agree with that. However the music industry is such a tough and competitive business, and at Jewel's level, airplay is very important. If and when she becomes a staple of the industry like Bob Dylan or Neil Young, she can forget airplay and just rely on that huge fanbase... but right now she needs to continue to plug away with these radio stations so she can BUILD her fanbase and continue to achieve the success she's enjoyed over the past years. This album is really critical in terms of Jewel's career... and it's VERY good, and deserves to be heard by lots of people. We can help achieve that. So CALLLLLL.. it WILL make a difference!!! Steve ps- I will probably make a website later on this weekend that gives you email addresses and/or links so you can request the song online. That's an inexpensive way for those who don't live in the areas listed (like me! who lives in canada!) to request the song. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #536 ***************************
