Now the problem is British and American culture is incredibly different. Like over here if i peeved my mum off or gave my sister some greif i would get the living shish kebab kicked out of me by my mum or my old man. Im 19 and this happened even after i moved out. If i popped round to see my mum and dad and spoke out of line i'd get shouted at and a clip round the ear. And it DOES work. It is basic Classical Conditioning. Just read up on your Pavlov, and make that bad = pain association to your 'pupil' and all will be sorted. I tyhink that Americans tend to run to councilling to easy or to situation 'management' groups when a lot of these things can be sorted out in the home place without all the carry on of seeing therapists. Can't you see that in most cases therapists aren't needed? Why is a therapist going to tell you to sort it out and stop going? He's making money ut of you. Therapy is a relatively new phoenomena that since it's conception seems not to have solved the world's probs but creatd more, and more. Therapy is cool, it's popular, you are a no one unless you have had it. These are not the messages we want to portray. So in conclusion i would be tempted rather than going to therapy you sit them down at your place and you try taking an active role in their guidance, help them establish themselves. And if one of them swears, clip them round the ear etc. As long and maybe meaningless as this is, I hope it helps, Nick ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Nov 2001 12:20:00 +0000 From: "M B" Subject: [EDA] Dreaful Derrick (a final note) I know we all want to move past the Derrick thing, and I didn't want to get involved, but I just wanted to say that I feel a bit sorry for him. He was a personality on the list, and his emails did often contain a load of rubbish, but they were also often interesting - mostly good for a laugh and nothing else. I'm not defending him, (I've only been in contact with him once) as I don't know what he's done to a lot of people, especially Mike and other of Jewel's people. I did think Mike's email was bad - firstly because I don't think any of us like to see Mike like that (nor ever have before), but also because Mike is a role model for what can and can't be done on this list, and his mail opened a floodgate of swearing and nastiness. I must say that in all of that, I never saw Derrick swear once, nor tell anyone to "go to Hell", nor wish anything bad on anyone. He simply defended himself. Again, maybe I'm wrong, he may have done in private. I guess all of it shows that there can even be a black sheep in a group of Angels. Anyway, best to leave it alone now, what's done is done, and all I'm saying is that I was looking forward to Derrick's take on "This Way"!! It would have been a laugh... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2001 04:54:58 -0800 (PST) From: Abigail Greif Subject: [EDA] Clarification I have sent December a private message, and as Shachar put very well, I did not mean not to share things with the list, only that we should all think before we hit the "send" button. I don't think this is what gives the list it's heart or character, because back in 97' (which is when I joined) it had plenty of both. Back then, people discussed things that were not jewel related, but because there was moderation, not every little thing someone felt like saying was on, and it was much much easier and more pleasant to read. Also, as an oldtimer, most of the people I'm friends with nowadays are those same people I met back in 97' and 98'. Things back then were a lot friendlier. does anyone today still even know what the AAN is?... I still remember my "mom" on the list very fondly. Also I had three "daughters" of my own, which was great. It's not really that it was more intimate (which is natural, since there were fewer people) but it was a JEWEL, and JEWEL RELATED list. Not that it was ALL we talked about, but it was the subject of the list. It's been like two years since I had heard anyone on the list write an email and tells about his volunteer work. I doubt some of the EDAs nowadays have even heard of the EDAF. Call me nostalgic, but I miss the friendly little list. With this week bringing an end to baseball and a beginning to basketball, patriotic songs are at a premium. But at Game 2 of the World Series, there was no anthem. Ray Charles did a rendition of America the Beautiful, instead. And God Bless America - crooned this week by Harry Connick Jr., at the Knicks' season opener and by Vanessa Williams at Game 2 of the series, to highlight just two - seems almost to have knocked the national song out of the country's consciousness since the terrorist attacks. It's become the new traditional seventh-inning-stretch tune. Still, it's Whitney Houston's 1991 Super Bowl version of Francis Scott Key's Star-Spangled Banner that has been the nation's best-selling single for weeks. But just about anyone who attempts to tackle the famous song will tell you it isn't easy. Jeffrey Osborne has sung the national anthem between 45 and 50 times at L.A. Lakers' games and has opened the Lakers' home season for 21 years, including Tuesday's game against Portland. "To me, it's not one of the greatest melodies ever written, so it tends to be kind of on the boring side. That's why singers try to do so much with it. But it's best if you try to stay as legitimate as you can," he says. Celebs taking a stab at the song through the years have had their star-spangled flubs. Roseanne Barr in 1990 was vilified for her now-historic off-key rendition at a San Diego Padres-Cincinnati Reds game, following it up with a crotch grab aimed at a booing audience. More recently, Macy Gray made news in her hometown of Canton, Ohio, when she attempted the song this summer at the National Football League's Hall of Fame game and forgot the words. "I blew it," she said. Jewel sang a sweet rendition to kick off the World Series Saturday in Arizona, but she explains that it's not as easy as it looks. The song covers a wide range, and the stadium presents sound problems. "It is hard because you can't hear yourself," she says. "I don't care how many times you've done it, your heart is still pounding. It's so loud, and you've got two baseball teams staring at you. No matter what, you feel a little bit out of your body. It's surreal. You're halfway through, and you're suddenly not sure what words you've been singing. It's a trippy experience." "It's a very awkward, difficult song," says opera star Denyce Graves, who sang the national anthem at World Series Game 4. She was also asked to sing its rival, God Bless America, which she says is "more melodic, more singable," at Game 5. Singing in a stadium can mean a delay of as much as a measure and a half, says Graves. "You remember Row, Row, Row Your Boat and singing it in a round? It's like that. You have to focus on your own voice and keep going." Jewel uses an ear monitor to hear her own voice, but last Saturday it was so loud that all she could hear was the crowd. Plus, the song itself covers an octave and a half, which requires most singers to switch registers. "Whitney Houston can belt it and hit those high notes. I sing it quieter and sweeter. You have to do it according to what your voice can handle." Vanessa Williams, who sang God Bless America at Tuesday's Lakers game, says singing at a sporting event right now is "very fulfilling. It's inspiring. People listen and sing along." The key, she says, is not to try improving on the original. "You scratch your head and say, 'How am I going to make mine different?' " Don't bother. "Get back to the essence of the song. It's about the country and how we're supposed to feel about our country."
