Subject: [EDA] NJC: NEW TOPIC Did anyone watch any episodes of the show Big Brother 2? If you did, you may remember one of the guys on there named Will...he's a doctor. Anyway, that guy is now $500,000 richer (he won the show/game) because of having the exact same attitude about life in general that I have, coupled with a good sense of humor. There were times when some of the females on the show were cussing him out at the top of their lungs about something one night, and the next morning that same female was shaving Will's legs for him! (he's one of those guys into that thing, I guess like swimmer's do) Anyway, the guy is smart, intelligent, and knows how to read people VERY well. He was nominated for eviction from the house 4 times I think, more than anyone else....never won head of household so he never was able to put up anyone else for nomination. He played the game that way on PURPOSE to put himself in the seemingly weakest position. Coupled with the immature antics of the other houseguests, and his persistence and pride in standing up for what he believed in, he's now $500,000 richer. Also, he was voted most liked among the viewers. And get this...the guy told lies 24/7 while in the house, and even TOLD all the house guests on day one that his strategy was to lie and decieve people as much as possible. It worked! LOL So you can think what you wish about me, him, or anyone with this type of mentality, but the bottom line is that (Even if they won't admit it), people like this become/are very successful in life, and others do admire that. He has the largest fan following of anyone on that show. And at times was the biggest jerk of all...you try to figure that out. :-) It's all about knowing people, reading people, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Nov 2001 13:57:15 -0600 From: "jamie mathews" Subject: RE: [EDA] My friend Derrick.... >"The bottom line seems to be that anyone who doesn't worship Jewel gets >flamed. I may have been a bit obsessed 4-5 years ago, but now I don't think her music is nearly as good as it could be. Sometimes I don't even like her. Most times I still remember why I did. I definitely do not worship Jewel. And I don't think I've ever been flamed on this list. Oh wait, yes I have. I don't want to lecture you all, because you are supposedly adults. So start acting as such. If this makes Derrick happy, let him say whatever the hell is on his mind at that moment. No one is putting a knife to your throat forcing you to actually READ what he posts. TAKE THINGS INTO PROPORTIONS! Here's a thought: Has anyone ever had a discussion with a friend/girlfriend/boyfriend over e-mail that turned heated? Has anyone tried to make a point, started an argument or tried to "yell" at someone through an e-mail or instant message??? For those of you who have, you will know what i'm talking about. For those of you who haven't, LISTEN CAREFULLY! Tones, mannerisms, gestures, actions, facial expressions, etc... are NOT easily deciphered through EMAILS and INSTANT MESSAGES!! In fact, thru a debate its almost impossible to tell how *hard the person is punching the keyboard*. Get it?? My point is: everyone's calling anything Derrick says an "attack".....but thats just because they already got it in their heads that "everything Derrick is saying is out to be negative or cutting" or whatever. If you re-read his posts, viewing them from a LIGHTER standpoint you would get an ENTIRELY new perspective. (((ITS TRUE, DO IT - I read a letter of his twice, each time from a different perspective.))) The FIRST time, I looked at it imagining he was writing in a very sarcastic negative ::rolling eyes:: tone.....and I was like "Ugh. Jerk. Bad email."....so I went back and RE-read it this time thinking "smiling" "playful banter" "a discussion rather than just I-love-jewel-shes-so-perfect-blah-blah mumbo jumbo" and my second impression was fine, it was interesting, analytical (which is a GOOD thing.), fun, & NORMAL CONVERSATION! Here's an example!!!! You can say in a cute coochie coo voice: "good doggie! you're such a cute doggie" OR you can say in a MEAN, HARSH, ANGRY voice: "GOOD DOG!!!!!! YOURE SUCH A GOOD DOG!!!" and the dog thinks he's being yelled at. The things you, me, ANYONE types in an email or instant message should be taken with a salt SHAKER, never mind just a grain of salt. Because the emotion behind it is hidden and it really does make all the difference. I definitely believe that EDAs have taken many of Derricks letters the wrong way. (no one's fault) Hence the flaming begins. More email arguments ensue. Or EDAs bombard poor Mike's because of the way THEY FEEL Derrick meant the letter..... when if taken in different context, they maynot've been offended even in the first place!!!! And another thing! If you're like "Derricks too analytical and he picks on everything!" .....then so WHAT!?? that's a damn GOOD thing. It means your intelligent and you see beyond just the surface of life. Isn't that one of the things we like about Jewel? She analyzes life??? Situations??? Do you think her little quotes like "Life is your emotional perception of it." (which happens to be my favorite) was something that just came to her and happend to sound cool and make sense so she said it?? NO, obviously it's something she's analyzed and OVERanalyzed till she came to that conclusion. This letter goes for derrick as well as any of the other strongly opinionated people on this list who've gotten flamed for people not understanding their posts. Analyzing situations, constructive criticizm, all these things keep us on our toes and ready to IMPROVE our life. Don't cut yourself off from bettering yourselves because you think you've already 'got it all figured out'. That all said....the analyzing and criticizm that i'm speaking of, though, should be respectful. Let's remember that too. So next time you see a post come in from dkaracos@utmb.edu or Sean Hooks or whomever .....don't hate it before you open it. A salt shaker, people. Peace & whiskey! First, there's the issue of thinking you are "just like" some guy on a tv show. In a nutshell -- "_Reality_ TV" ain't. next... Big Brother is a "game" played by individuals who try to manipulate each other. Life is a team sport, and is best "won" by those who cooperate with others. Ponder that for a moment. next... why in god's name would you be proud of being similar to a character on a tv show who is _admittedly_ a lying, manipulative bastard? Winning on Big Brother, and having "fans"... that doesn't translate to being successful in life, and being similar to the winner is really a pretty weak foundation for a superiority complex. The implications of your ramble are frightening if you stop and think about it for a second or two. You've basically just told us that you're proud of being a manipulative liar who approaches life as if it's a game, and other people are merely opponents in that game to be beaten. I don't know about you, but if I found myself writing that to a bunch of complete strangers, I'd really consider it time to reconsider my priorities in life. Anyhow. Not like it'll matter to you a lick anyway, but I couldn't resist commenting. Kevin - ---------- Kevin B. Okay guys, the first 120 or so e-mails about this whole damn situation were kind of funny, but now it is getting a bit ridiculous... I thought this list was supposed to be to talk, learn, and share of JEWEL STORIES and FACTS..... I mean come on, when it gets to the point where everyone's got over 100 e-mails of bitching and moaning, and NONE of it pertains to Jewel, it defeats the purpose of this entire list and ruins the REAL fun for most of the people, excluding the ones who are PUBLICLY contributing to this chaos... I too am about to begin deleting e-mail about this horeshit. It's really getting annoying... AKA It's NOT FUNNY ANYMORE!!! I seriously think that Mike should consider trying to moderate this list to keep this whole argument between the select few private because, and I think I am speaking for a lot of people when I say, it is boring and not-jewel or EDA related. This is now personal. Too much JUNK mail... there, I've said my two cents and Now I am going to go to Jewel's website to see if I can find anything New or interesting ABOUT JEWEL.... Good Day.
