His album is fast approaching POY as my favourite ever... If I listen to him too much I'm scared I'll like him more than Jewel :). His lyrics are simple, funny, and they're so so true... Myself having seen her play LIVE, I can say that none of the above is true. Of course everyone is going to have their own opinion's of everything. I could say the Beatles were the best country band in the world...haha...of course they weren't country, but I could say anything if I choose to. So just keep that in mind when reading the majority of the posts on this list. I've stated some opinions too a time or two. But in this case, I'm basing my writings on experience. What I witnessed. So until someone else does this, it's all just an opinion, with no factual basis to back it up. As far as the r&b stuff goes, maybe alot of it is commercialized, but let's not take away anything from those who have true talent like Alicia Keys. I'm not particularily a fan of her's or that type of music, but I can respect a talented artist. I wouldn't group her into a category with people like Macy and India. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 12:57:01 -0300 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: Re: [EDA] Sean Hooks replies(Michelle Branch and Standing Still) Michelle: Jewel with an edgier sound?? There's an article in today's London Evening Standard criticizing the lack of British stars featured on the cover of November's issue of Vanity Fair. The journalist, Zoe Williams, takes each of the stars (Jewel, Beyonce Knowles, Beck, David "officially an alien" Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Maxwell, Emmylou Harris, Gwen Stefani, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott and Chris Cornell) and gives British alternatives. This is what she has to say about Jewel... "You probably already know Jewel writes poetry - to find out how awesomely bad it really is, go into Google and do a search on 'Jewel', 'Poetry', and 'My breasts'. You will be astonished. But if she's there just as a singer-songstress, there are other women in the world. There is Beth Orton. There is Kathryn Williams. They do not taint the poetic medium with verses about their twin orbs. They make good music" She continues... "I'm not (although I sound like I am) saying the whole list should be English. I'd like to see Eminem on it (with or without Dido). I'm simply saying that music, more so even than trainers is a global business - and America, at the moment, is a bus-ride away from its epicentre." Hey Everyone.... With Standing Still getting out and showing some really good progress we have the power to put it over the top... Jewel gives like 40% of her salary to charity to do her part in making a difference... Now it's time to do ours... If we can take a minute out of each day to request Standing Still on MTV's TRL request page and also by visiting our local radio station websites or by calling in and requesting Standing Still.. We can make a difference and make more money for Jewel.. in turn giving more money to charity and those who need it... We have the numbers to be powerful.. just like we did by helping Jewel win the Valentine's Charity Kiss... Let's come together as a group and make this happen... We are the only ones who can do it.. and it is our duty to do so... Visit the following sites and request Standing Still once a day.... http://www.mtv.com/onair/trl/votevideo.jhtml http://www.104krbe.com/djbooth/requests/requests.asp If any of you have other request sites please share or email me... I would like to organize a website or something to help us quickly send requests to radio stations across the world.. If anyone has ideas or would like to help... please let me know... I think I was looking for some of Jewel's poetry. Anyway....Nicole Blackman (from what I've heard so far) is a poet, and a mighty good one, who reads her poetry while there is "clubbish" music in the background. Some of her stuff was just her reading, but everything I've heard so far is just awesome!!!! Just a heads up! It's very different from the norm, I really enjoyed it. Jewel was saying on a radio >show recently that all of the songs are recorded live in the studio..... >and >rick dees said "but that sounded like a drum machine.." and she said no, it >was live drums. so yeah.. hmmm...yeah, it's quite possible this is the track that josh freese contributed to. he's a rock drummer and judging by the acts attrated to him...i would say a pretty good drummer. A Perfect Circle had some drum 'machine' sounding parts...and i'm sure Guns N' Roses (or mostly axl) hired him cuz his drumming probably sounds drum 'machine-esque' ...cuz the techno sound is what axl is (or at least was) going for (evidenced by 'oh my god' which josh plays on) so my theory is josh appears on standing still...but i could be wrong. tom _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2001 17:03:35 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." No, and I never said anything like this whatsoever. Show me where you read this please. I even SAID I've expressed some opinions over the years, since I have...it's impossible not to. So I said the complete opposite of what you are assuming here. >Your 'opinion' is worth no more than anybody elses. Let people express their >opinion, even when it is contrary to yours. What I SAID was that I didn't like it when people state their opinion as fact, when it isn't. Otherwise, I encourage opinions...it's what keeps lists like this interesting for the most part. >And to restate a few things... Derricks opinion *IS* just an opinion. No kidding?
