I heard it once on the radio from start to finish and haven't seen the video. It sounded very over-produced and poppy but better than most of the stuff of that ilk from Spirit. Lyrically it just seems a little deeper. Musically it is extremely light and fluffy and quite cheesy in parts actually, like when that drum-machine kicks in I winced. And as for this Michelle Branch thread that keep seeming to recur. I don't see it. She comes off as a Christina Aguilera who maybe writes some of her own songs. A typical, attractive enough to put on MTV 18 year old with nothing profound to say. Everything is a commodity these days and they're always looking for a new formula for success. So now they're gonna try to blend two popular recent trends, boy/girl band pop and female singer/songwriters Lilith- Fair-esque. Michelle Branch seems a perfect example of this marketing strategy. I'm sure more are coming The other big popular blend now is funky hip hop influenced R&B chick. ie: Macy Gray, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Indie Arie. Like, we're in touch with our black roots but we wear funky new style type hip hop gear and incorporate a little rap. If I hear more of Standing Still or get around to taking a good hard look at the lyrics I'll throw a commentary out there. I'll be at the Tori Amos shows in NY this week. Her new album may not be perfect but it's damn ambitious at least, something Jewel's will prob'ly not be. In fact, had she made Pieces of You now, a lot of the more ambitious and "different" stuff prob'ly never would have seen the light of day. Seven-minute Harry Chapin-esque story songs like "Adrian" on the Atlantic hopes it's a big seller Jewel album? Hardly. And she(Tori) is touring solo for the first time in like 7 years, something I'd like to see Jewel do before too long as well. Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2001 18:13:00 EDT From: jewelchute@aol.com Subject: [EDA] sjc: a jewel duet idea JOHN MAYER! JOHN MAYER! But you could be right. Trying however makes sense to me, I can't say why, it just does; sounds better. > Working in an office building tall > > > You don't know who's next to you at all > > > But being out here > > > The blood, the guts, the beer > > > Is a test > > > Only time will tell > > > It brings you close, man > > > Closer than heaven I still don't think it's heaven. I think it's hell. Hell definitely rhymes with tell, not any of that half rhyme stuff you were talking about. And closer than hell is not necessarily a bad thing, I think it just means that it brings the guys together closer than anything else could. She's not using hell in the exact sense of the meaning of the word. Plus in the second line, I don't think it starts with you, it just starts with Don't. And this line: > > This week endorsement holidays I don't think that's quite right, but you're on the right track, I have not been able to figure it out myself. I think you're close, but there seems to be something between week and endorsement I think. I"m not sure it's even endorsement, if it is it has an s on the end, the beginning of the word doesn't sound right to be endorsement. I really don't know. And the rest we pretty much agree on except the line in Standing Still, which I have no further comment on because I still think it's goal. Spent quite a bit of time at ground 0, and even went to visit Amy in Jersey City. She's the best :) So, after weeks of requesting Standing Still in Cincinnati, and never ever hearing it ("we don't have clearance to play it yet") I heard it in NYC. And I didn't even have to request it haha. On the way home today I heard it again in Pennsylvania. After the song was played the Dj says "And that was Jewel.... She's BACK!!!" I thought that was nice and great to hear!anyway, feeling lucky, I called the radio station back in Cincinnati and asked them to play it. he said a blunt ok. Then, My friend called to request it. 5 minutes later... Jewel :) Woooohoooo.....3 time sin 24 hours. Plus I saw the new video. I must say... I didn't like the version I heard on the net, I think because it wasn't very clear. Now that I have heard it clearly, and on the radio, I totally love this song. It's unique, catchy, and I like the beat. Anyway, the video is very cute too. ok.. im rambling... im going to bed!goodnight!!!! Subject: RE: [EDA] Sean Hooks replies(Michelle Branch and Standing Still) Actually Michelle writes *all* her own songs and has been playing guitar for over 4 years...well before Britney, Christina, or the others even had a record deal. :-) And I actually think Christina has a better voice. She's trained in that way though. Michelle is more Jewel-like, but with an edgier sound. Would be like Jewel just doing primarily her heavier sounding songs, like Down, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, Rocker Girl, etc. That's the best way to describe Michelle I think. She's really not anything like any of the present female "pop" acts, aside that she's under 21, and female. >Everything is a commodity these days and they're always looking for a >new formula for success. - ----------------------- Many thing are, but not everything. I don't believe there was anyone searching for a new formula, or Maverick would have signed her 2 years ago when she was starting out. She already has a full length CD under a belt, ever since early 2000. But back then no one compared her to the other pop acts...why? Is it just cause she's on a label now? I'd certainly hope not. For she's the same person still, so that wouldn't be fair to her at all. The other big popular blend now is funky hip hop influenced R&B chick. ie: Macy Gray, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Indie Arie. - -------------- How about Blu Cantrell? ;-) I do think Alicia is really talented. She CAN really play the piano, and has some background in classical music. I don't know much about the others though. And she(Tori) is touring solo for the first time in like 7 years, something I'd like to see Jewel do before too long as well. - --------------------------- Don't hold your breath. It took Tori 7 years...so I figure it'll be at least that for Jewel...maybe longer...aside from a few select one-off performances here and there. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #460 ***************************
