Fabio ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Oct 2001 00:51:25 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] This Way meaning/album cover/Standing Still Hey Guys Just responding to a couple of recentthreads. Firstly, the cover. I personally didn't like the This Way coverwhen I first saw it, but it's beginning to grow on me. I LOVE the photograph. The high contrast gives it a kind of washed look, plus she looks very goodb&(100x better than in any of the photos done for Spirit). I think the font is a little simple, but it's growing on me. The black background is also nice. The photography that's been done for the album (there are three photos up at Atlantic Records website if you go to Jewel's Bio section, but there used to be about 10; they've since been taken down) is the best I've seen of Jewel in along time. It's very simple, yet expressive, and looks great. The photographer is a woman whose name escapes me, but she has done a lot of art photography. She's not just a "celebrity photographer", which is very encouraging. All in all I think we'll have to see the album cover in person to get the true feeling of it. There could be a lot of textures and detail that we can't see on a computer screen. Also, it's the full booklet and not just the cover that really shows you the artwork of an album. Secondly, the "meaning" of ThisWay. It's obviously difficult to hypothesise the meaning of the title of the album, as we don't even know the full tracklist yet. However, of the songs I've heard that I know are on the record, I think This Way is about two things - I think it's about finding direction first of all. I think Jewel is probably at a place in her life and her writing that could be described as a crossroads. "ThisWay" implies a question about direction. I think a lot of her recent writing expresses that (beginning at Stephenville and leading all the way up to the most recent more political songs like Jesus Loves You and New Wild West). I also think the album title is about perception. This could be just me, but listening to the lyrics of a lot of her new songs, it's very easy to find multiple meanings to a lot of things she says. Obviously all this is subjective to each person, and I could be totally wrong, but the fact that I could be wrong is also a good thing. Spirit had a very obvious theme, and the title reflects that from the getgo. This Way is much more ambiguous, which is nice. I'm sure the title track (if it exists...) will let us know more. Lastly, Standing Still. Standing Still, as I've said before, is a perfect example of an exemplary pop song, and nothing more. Itbs real instruments (as opposed to Britney-esque synthesizers), with an upbeat melody and a catchy hook for a chorus. The harmonies, in my opinion, really elevate the song. Jewel's harmony vocals during the chorus are very subtle (in my opinion), and just slightly lift the song. There's also a beauty in harmony... some of the most beautiful singing I've heard is subtle harmony, where you hear it and you don't, and some notes have more of it than others. I like the harmonies in this song. Again, I think we have to realise that this album is going to have productionb& that is if bproductionb means a band and maybe Jewel singing SOME harmony vocals. We can also take comfort in the knowledge that this material, whilst it is with a band, was recorded live in the studio, not in bits, and that Jewel sings live. She herself describes it as the antithesis of Spirit in that itbs raw and not entirely tweaked, and she also says itbs the only album shebs made that shebs truly proud of. Furthermore, she says every song is different from the last. The album is not going to be 14 different versions of Standing Still. If some of us are depressed that this isnbt going to be Pieces of You Part 2 (as in, all acousticb&), just think about that, and it should make things just a little bit better. That's my rant for the week. Steve ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #456 ***************************
