She pulls out one of the very worst songs in her arsenal, the loathsome "Hands." Only kindness matters? Yeah, kindness will solve our problems with terrorism, kindness will fix the stock market, kindness will see us through. A few brief good things from the performance: 1)solo acoustic, 2)blue jeans, 3)MAYBE the one line in the song about singing for the voiceless man Let's just compare this shoddy piece of cornball songwriting to two other comparable events on recent late night television. First to Tuesday's Letterman, where Tori Amos performed a stunning version of "Time" that visibly affected Dave and was the very definition of "moving." And, only minutes before, on Leno, LeeLee Sobieski pouring her heart out in poetry. Now, I'm not saying her emotive, college-girl free verse was anything profound. But it was real and honest and risky. Sitting there reading something from your personal journal about such a touchy subject requires a lot more courage then Jewel singing "Hands." Besides being poorly written, the song is another example of how hypocritical this country is. We say there is supposed to be separation of church and state and freedom of, and from, religion, and yet everywhere I turn I hear GOD bless America, or, a day of mourning and PRAYER. Sickening. The recent events in New York City were caused, as are most acts of violence throughout history, BY religion. It pains me to hear Jewel, who once uttered lyrics like "we are that to which we pray," stooping to the bland, ineffectual, Lemming-ness of "we are god's hands." Nonetheless, it was nice to see her standing alone, playing an acoustic guitar. I've yet to hear her new single "Standing Still." What I've heard of it, and the new album en masse, has me wary. Don't like the cover, "Serve the Ego," or "Break Me." That Wild West song sounds promising though. And hopefully she hasn't fucked with "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" too much, a la the crappy Spirit version of "Deep Water." So, that's my take. I think I'm done now. I agree with a lot you say, but Aerosmith had their demons too. The New Kids on the Block, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson... The list goes one. People barely remember their names now, which is what I feel will happen to Britney Spears and co., but Aerosmith persevered nonetheless. I really doubt they had the pressure that Jewel's label is giving to her. And she has gone diamond and multi-platinum!!! I could see if she wasn't making them any money (hey, everyone's got to eat) but that isn't the case. I don't think Jewel will have too much of a problem anyway. I'm pretty excited about her upcoming album, and I haven't heard one song off of it!! So others who have heard her music are probably just excited as I am... Later Christy the Tattoed Angel - --- Kelli Coppens wrote: I just wanted to reply to this post as well as the list: I think it is very possible that jewels managers or record co. or whoever they are might be nervous. Yes, Aerosmith did not have an album for many years; but that was in the '80s, a very different time then. I dont know about Poe.. But that was 5 years ago and in the music media buisness, trends change the times quicker than you think. We are living in a terrible time of mindless pop culture. Britney, Christina, N-sync, even that girlie band (thats not really a talented band in my opinion) called that was on pop stars... i cant think of the name.... Eve something... well anyway these groups are throwing out hits left and right which puts a lot of pressure of real muscicians like Jewel. The trick is, these "non-artists" dont even write their own songs! Heck, most of them like Britney and Eve whatever dont even sing... its all fake! So of course its easier for them to pump out hits because all they have to do is starve themselves and get their nails done. Jewel should be okay whatever happens. She is real. Real artists like Bob Marley or John Denver live on. She can afford to release a cd without a label right?? Well, i dont know if there are legal stuff with that but whatever. She will still write songs and poetry probably for the rest of her life. Being on the Jewel list i am sure we can count on always having a connection with her. ===== "Lend your voices only to sounds of freedom." -- Jewel __________________________________________________ Terrorist Attacks on U.S. - How can you help? She did look very cute though - her hair has been kind of funky lately... It was funny at the end when Dave went to put his arm around her and accidentally started to put his hand on her ass. He he. As for "Standing Still" - it's not here yet! Here would be Wilmington, Delaware ("I want to see a screen door factory!") so we're stupid anyway, lol. There. It was too slow and > it got all weird sometimes. No fuss here...just what I feel is a logical explanation. We already know the song was being played a lot the previous week in light of the recent tragedies, especially so in New York City. That is clearly why she sang it last night. It may have even been requested by the Letterman staff. (i.e. I would not be surprised if they approached her once they realized she was going to be in town and figured it was a no-brainer choice to have her on singing "Hands". ) Plus I am pretty certain the tempo was purely done out the repesct of the of the solemness of the tragic events. There's no way she would do a rocked out version, we all know that, but I am also certain it's the solemness as to why she didn't sing it even remotely close to the released/radio version's tempo. The city is still quite raw with emotion. The late night talk shows are easing into comedy slowly, and I am certain their musical guests will be easing into thing also. Why is it that Jewel only got to sing one song last night and wasn't interviewed at all? It's like they assumed that she wouldn't have anything to say about the events that occurred last week. I personally would have loved to hear what she was thinking about those things. I realize it might have been out of place for her to plug her new album, but he could have given her at least a short segment instead of making us watch that annoying goofball do push-ups. I mean please! They do that to a lot of artists, just have them on the show for a song, but don't bother to find out anything about them, they just have them sing something popular and barely give them a decent Hello. But, in one sense I do agree with Sean. She seemed to sing Hands because it was the obvious choice, her only mainstream release that identified with the tragedy. I agree that it was 'caused' in a way by religion, and maybe Hands' religious references don't fit with that. There are so many unreleased songs that have a lot more emotion and would probably fit the situation more - Jessica, to me, would've been fitting. It deals with a situation that a lot of people will be dealing with at the moment. And I'd have loved to see her perform that on TV :). I can't think off the top of my head, but there are many more songs I'd have liked to see her to perform before Hands. Even Life Uncommon or Innocence Maintained. Oh well, she did Hands, I'm pretty sure it sounded great (I do like the song)... And I'd have loved to have the chance to see Jewel perform ANYTHING on TV! So count yourselves lucky. First, let me say I was very happy to see Jewel wearing a U.S.A. shirt, I am glad to see her showing her support and patriotism. Hands was beautiful being done acoustically, that's the Jewel I fell in love with. Simple and beautiful. For those of you who missed her performance, I will have pictures of her performance last night on Letterman and today on TRL on my Jewel page tomorrow morning. Please stop by and visit. Subject: [EDA] Hands Just wanted to say I've enjoyed reading the recent honest posts regarding Jewel's performance last night. I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been more backlash from them though, but I guess that's good. I was a bit weary of saying more about it myself since in the past I would have gotten quite a number of flame letters in the mailbox. Not to say these others may not be as I speak. Sean had some good comments to make. I did however like the slower version of Hands..and thought it was appropriate. Of course there would have been better song choices as many agree, but that's what's been playing on the radio there, so Atlantic did what they were supposed to. It's a business, let's not forget that. Tragedy or not, the execs are still thinking about what the best thing to do is. They will capitalize on her new CD in the coming months...there's plenty of time for that still. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 10:13:04 -0500 From: "Kristie Biggs" Subject: [EDA] Well, I wrote to Letterman Please don't flame me anyone, but Letterman kind of pissed me off with his attitude toward Jewel last night so I went to his website and wrote the following, I just thought ya'll might be interested: I am upset about last night's show. You had Jewel on who is one of the more exceptionally caring and genuine human beings on the planet; yet instead of bothering to interview her or get her opinions regarding last weeks events, you made us watch Will Ferrel do push-up. Come on, like anyone cares how many push-ups he can do. If you listen to any of Jewel's music or read her poetry; you will know that she has a lot to say and can do more than sing and play a guitar. I've seen you do this to countless music artists; you bring them on, have them sing whatever song is popular at the time, and then you disregard them as if they are mindless jukebox's there only for your immediate entertainment. She is a spiritual and emotional person and she should be given the courtesy of being able to express her opinions. You also completely disregarded the fact that she has a new album coming out on November 13th. Your tone in mentioning it seemed almost a painful bother. You didn't even have the courtesy to mention the title (which for the record it "This Way") I'm guessing that perhaps you didn't even try to find out that information. I realize that in light of recent events it's not the most important issue to plug a new album, but you could have a least feigned interest. Thank You For Your Time, Kristie K.
