First is that "Hands," be it "inspirational" or not, is still one of Jewel's worst songs. It's hamhandness and theism does not inspire me in any way. Although those who live in the NY area know that Z100 is the worst of mainstream trendy crap anyway. Some of the other songs mentioned in this post I felt were very moving though, especially "New York Minute" by Don Henley, the lyrics there are eerily fitting. Two other notes. The version of "Hallelujah" is by Jeff Buckley, but it is not his song, he is covering Leonard Cohen. Secondly, and most egregiously, is "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen. This is NOT a flag-waving anthem. It never has been, and Bruce himself has said that anyone who would interpret the song this way is a fool. It is a borderline anti-American song about our terrible treatment of American soldiers as they returned home from Vietnam. The "Born in the USA" chorus is IRONIC! The fact that radio stations are playing it now is an example of the dangers of jingoism in times likes these. (jingoism means blind patriotism) This post is intended to discuss Jewel and music. The fact that it secondhandedly references the recent tragedy is, well, a secondhand reference. I agree with list-manager Mike Connell however that general discussion of September 11, 2001 is best conducted in forums specifically designed for it, rather than hear, a Jewel mailing list. Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 05:30:25 EDT From: NEW24PHILLY@aol.com Subject: [EDA] TO THE OWNER AND EVERYONE ELSE HEY THERE- NICE TO BE BACK-I JUST WANT TO TELL THE OWNER, AND EVERYONE ELSE, I AM SURE YOU HAVE NOTICED ALREADY BY THE LATEST POST THAT ALREADY THE NEGATIVITY HAS RESUMED, SEAN HOOKS@AOL.COM, HAS ALREADY PLACED NEGATIVITY ON THIS LIST, BY HIS OPINION ON HANDS, MR HOOKS THIS IS AN OPINION POST AND DISCUSSION LIST. I think Mike is right about not truly reading the posts, and Jake is just an example of that in this case. Please reread Sean's post, and you will find that it is quite valid, and to the point. As for this being a discussion list... Well, it would be very hard to discuss something such as music without having opinions. And just because Sean does not care for Hands, I fail to see how this makes his post negative. You may not like Ride Away (Boy Needs A Bike), but Sean probably counts it as some of Jewel's best... That is just personal taste. Talk of removing list members because they do not agree with most of the other list members is just plain scary, and in my *opinion* wrong. All that will come of that is the downfall of this list, leaving us with perhaps a small saccharine (sp?) list, of people with completely boring views, or people afraid to post their real thoughts because of the chance of being "voted off the island." We do not need (and again, this is an *opinion*) or want such a junior high mall clichii. Besides, if everyone always agreed on everything, life would be very boring. There has always be debate on this list. Some people like some things, other people like other things, and they talk about it. Go look in the archives from five years ago. The list was a very different place (and some would be quick to add "a better place") back then, but there were still different ideas and *opinions* being tossed around, and not all of them that jewel was a Goddess, or that her newest color of nail polish was the greatest. And I'm willing to bet that while looking through the archives from back then, you will come across more than a few posts from Mr.... Hooks, and that quite a few of those posts you would not agree with. He has his own standard of music and of life (again, opinion, as that I of course cannot know the inner workings of someone I've only met online) and does not allow the mainstream fads of the time compromise them. Which if we were to sing his praises, we could say that is the independent spirit that Jewel's music talks about, or use phrases like "life uncommon"... if we all agreed with his views. Or if we wanted to assault his views we could call him stubborn, afraid of changes in music, narrow minded, etc. These labels seem all to depend on your personal tastes, neh? Please do not let your personal bias get in the way of honest judgment. I know we've all talked about people getting bashed because they did not like something that jewel did, etc, so I'll wrap this up now.. Rowdy PS as for z100 playing mainstream crap, I've not heard the station, so I cannot not say, but if it is like the majority of format radiostations in the country, then Sean is prolly right. >From: NEW24PHILLY@aol.com >To: jewel@smoe.org >Subject: [EDA] TO THE OWNER AND EVERYONE ELSE >Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 05:30:25 EDT > >HEY THERE- > >NICE TO BE BACK-I JUST WANT TO TELL THE OWNER, AND EVERYONE ELSE, I AM SURE >YOU HAVE NOTICED ALREADY BY THE LATEST POST THAT ALREADY THE NEGATIVITY HAS >RESUMED, SEAN HOOKS@AOL.COM, HAS ALREADY PLACED NEGATIVITY ON THIS LIST, BY >HIS OPINION ON HANDS, MR HOOKS THIS IS AN OPINION POST AND DISCUSSION LIST. >I THINK THAT WE MAY LOOK AT THE IDEA OF REMOVING PEOPLE FROM THE LIST THAT >ARE TO NEGATIVE TO BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE SUCH AS THIS INDIVIDUAL. So I got in my car to drive one of my daycare kids to preschool and I started to flip through the stations....and what do you know I hear Jewel talking!! They were talking about when she found out about the tragedy. Then the Radio guy and her started goofing around with each other. It was too cute!! The radio people even commented how cute she was after the interview! Of course they played Standing still after that. It was awesome. I am disapointed though cause I did miss the first part of the interview.....and I heard them say something about doing a "beautiful live version of hands" I think they said something about it being a little different to go with the tragedy. I am going to call the radio station and beg them to rebroadcast it and to play standing still!! Take care every one! I've gotten lots of tips about good songs that are being played on local radio stations from different people in different parts of the US over the years, and 2 or 3 weeks later the song becomes a huge hit on our radio stations down here. (Here being Houston, but I think this rule applies for most of the south) Does anyone else find this to be true? Just curious. I actually heard it on a rock station (104.5 Philly?)...as is the Sarah McGlachlan song ("Angel") that is also getting so much. Has anyone heard "Show Must Go On" by Queen? That is a very fitting song, especially since it was written by Brian May as a tribute to Freddy Mercury, and Freddy Mercury was singing it in anticipation of his own death. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sheila56" To: Sent: Tuesday, September 18, 2001 9:36 AM Subject: [EDA] life uncommon > did you guys hear Jewel's song "Life Uncommon"??? As far as I know, any song that is released can be nominated for a grammy...whether or not it will be is another story. I don't really pay attention to when the grammies air each year, I just see the previews and tune in, but I think alot of an artists chance of being nominated has to do with when the specific song was released - not necessarily intentionally, but songs that were popular, say, right after the previous years grammy's, usually have worn thin on people by the time they come around again, and probably lessen's that person's chances. I'd say that if Standing Still isn't nominated (again, not knowing when the next grammy's are) that there is a good chance that another single from her album might be. ~<3~ Sandy - - lavender haunted you, so I could only laugh in yellow - jewel - ..... http://www.envy.nu/angeloflove ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #414 ***************************
