Hi folks Please read all of this, as it has to deal with this mailing list, what happened last week both on and off list, and what direction this list is to take in the coming weeks. The list is officially back open. Sorry for the delay, but I was debating a few things about it while absorbing the thoughts many of you wrote to me during the shutdown and the thoughts of people I approached looking for opinions/advice. Basically, this is what I feel we have to do and the course the list must follow, at least for the near future. The tragedy that unfolded on live television throughout the world last Tuesday most certainly has stunned, shocked, saddened and angered all of the subscribers of this list that live in the country where this mailing list is based, which is the United States of America. I am also quite certain those events have had the same effect, perhaps at lesser levels, perhaps not, on everyone else on this list, whether they watched live or not. Especially so for those that live in countries where terrorism has either struck and/or has been a daily threat to them all of their lives. Thirty-seven countries lost citizens and over five thousand lives were lost last Tuesday in New York City, Arlington Virginia and Somerset County Pennsylvania. I have cried more than a few times since then. I am sure most of you have also. As I began to say, I was debating if I, as list owner should continue to allow the open discussion of what happened that day, and what is still unfolding as each day goes by. I strongly feel that it is my duties to try to keep this list mainly on topic, along with the ability to openly follow the course of accepted off-topic discussion it has taken since its' inception in 1995. How could I stop this EDA community of friends from discussing the events of last Tuesday and the ongoing ramifications of that horrific day? All those people were shockingly murdered that day and the short and long term repercussions will undoubtedly effect each and every one of us, our relatives, our friends. However, I cannot ignore what did happen on this list last week (even if it was mainly a relatively few people), and what has happened on this list in the past with "hot topic" discussions. In my opinion, the #1 main reason these heated discussions occur is simply because many people do not take the time to read, REALLY read, analyze and understand the post on the monitor in front of them, and usually take something totally wrong, or make assumptions. These same many people then post something either heated or something others reply to with flames and bang, we have a fight on our hands. I myself have been guilty of that at times my entire online life. I think we all have at least a few times. The trouble is, we have about 1,500 people here, and that's a lot of potential misunderstandings. Of course there are other reasons heated discussions occur here....especially with passionate topics where people have varied opinions and are VERY fervent about it. The main thing is, the aftermath of last Tuesday's attack is sure to be controversial on various fronts, and controversial topics are best discussed elsewhere. As I said, there are already many online forums where discussion of last Tuesday's attack are the main topic. Some are on AOL and quite easy to find, many are on various news related websites like CNN.com or USAToday.com. One of my favorites is at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/h2/h2.cgi?state=view&board=greatdebate.uscrisis but beware if you go there. It's on the BBC website based in the UK, and there are more than a few people posting there that are siding with the people who unleashed those attacks. (so if you want some heated discussion at times, I can think of no better website to go to. It's not heated most of the time, but there sure have been some verbal wars there) So, let's get this list going again...but please, let's not discuss the events of last Tuesday. This really is not the place for it. List history has shown that. We all know what happened last Tuesday, we all know where and how to give assistance. If you forgot, just turn on the TV, it's still 24/7 news on many stations....or head to a news website. Oh....I almost forgot....please feel free if to post asking if anyone has heard yet from various New York City area list members that hadn't yet checked in etc. That of course is more than OK. December ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 20:28:03 -0400 From: "Scott" Subject: [EDA] Pollstar.com - Catching Up With Jewel Catching Up With Jewel Updated 06:22 PDT Sat, Sep 15 2001 What better promotional tool to use than yourself? Jewel sets out to woo radio stations in person, supporting her new single "Standing Still." Her new album is due for release on November 13 - the same day the paperback edition of Chasing Down The Dawn, a collection of stories taken from her journals, reaches stores. The schedule she has lined up could be just about as intense as a full-blown tour as the singer/songwriter visits several radio stations each day to perform an acoustic set. Pollstar has information on dates from September 17 through September 21, with more to be added in the near future. Along with live performances, Jewel is also scheduled to participate in morning show interviews. A typical day, like the first on September 17, has her in the San Diego area hitting stations KFMB, KHTS, and KXST-FM. For fans looking to catch Jewel on the airwaves, be forewarned: Not every station will be broadcasting the performance live; some air the following day. On September 22, Jewel will join Alanis Morissette, Nelly Furtado, David Gray, Coldplay, Shelby Lynne, Barenaked Ladies, Everclear and other artists for the WMBX Mixfest 2001. The event takes place at Foxboro Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. scott.evans [[mind is DISCONNECTED. but my heart is WIRED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . Yahoo! KIIS in Los Angeles produced a tribute version of U2's "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" and are also playing a tribute version of Enya's "Only Time" and Faith Hill's "Star-Spangled Banner." "We were looking for something to help, songs that touch the heart, that help you reflect and make you feel good," KIIS program director John Ivy said Friday (September 14). "We are playing tributes that make sense and don't sensationalize the events in any way. Our listeners are calling for them." WHFS in Washington, D.C., produced a version of Moby's "Porcelain" that opens with the line, "Freedom itself was attacked this morning," from President Bush's address to the nation. Other sound clips interspersed with Moby lyrics such as "In my dreams I'm dying all the time" include "there was chaos everywhere" and "firefighters were crying." The tribute can be heard on the station's Web site (www.whfs.com). WVRV in St. Louis produced a tribute version of Annie Lennox's "Why," and are also playing a tribute version of Don Henley's "In a New York Minute" and a new version of "God Bless the U.S.A." by Tom Pilcher. "The songs we are playing are incredibly powerful," WVRV program director Mark Edwards said Friday. "In all of my many years in radio, never have I seen more response from listeners. These songs are touching people very deeply." WBBN in Chicago is playing Whitney Houston's "Star-Spangled Banner" and a tribute version of Enrique Iglesias's "Hero." In New York, WHTZ is spinning a tribute version of Jewel's "Hands," and in Chicago, WKQX is playing a tribute version of Live's new "Overcome." Live dedicated "Overcome" to the tragedies' victims this week, their spokesperson said Thursday. The song, from their new album V, due Tuesday, is available for download at their Web site (www.friendsoflive.com). WBCN in Boston is playing the Live piano ballad without the added dialogue. "I think [the tributes] are cheesy," Oedipus, the rock station's program director, said Friday. "I am not putting Bush on my station. He doesn't like the music we play. The song alone has hit a chord with our audience. It is an amazing song. It gives me chills when I hear it." "Overcome" opens with singer Ed Kowalczyk singing, "Even though/ The world is bleeding/ But feeling just fine/ Alone in the castle/ Where we're always free to choose." The edited version includes Bush declaring, "Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil." A tribute version of Aerosmith's "Living on the Edge" has also received air time on some stations, while others are relying on Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." to pump up listeners' pride. Country singer Jo Dee Messina's "Bring on the Rain" has been edited into a tribute version being played on country stations around the world. "When I recorded that song, it felt deep but it was about personal heartache," Messina told the Associated Press. "To know that the song also can relate to such a massive destruction, it gives the song an entirely new dimension. To have this song be a part of all of us uniting, feeling and connecting, is a massive deal for me." KCRW in the Los Angeles area, home to "Morning Becomes Eclectic" and the syndicated "Sounds Eclectic" shows, dedicated its airwaves to news coverage until Friday morning, when music director Nic Harcourt hosted a special show. Harcourt played songs such as Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah," Simon and Garfunkel's "America" and Joni Mitchell's "Come in from the Cold" on the show, an hour of which can be heard on the station's Web site (www.kcrw.com). "During this day of remembrance and national prayer," Harcourt said, "I felt it was important to program music that reflected the emotions and feelings many of us have experienced during the last week, music that could express sympathy, sorrow, strength and hope. It is my belief that music can help us heal." KCRW's Cathy Tamkin will host a second show dedicated to the tragedies at midnight Friday and said she will include PJ Harvey's "This Mess We're In," Belle & Sebastian's "I Fought in a War" and Bob Marley's "So Much Trouble in the World" on her show. Television stations are also including musical tributes in their coverage of the attacks. WNBC, New York's NBC affiliate, played Bruce Springsteen's version of "We Shall Overcome" during one of its segments. Others have also used Pilcher's "God Bless the U.S.A." scott.evans [[mind is DISCONNECTED. but my heart is WIRED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . Yahoo! I mean, I am so glad that I have so many Jewel songs to listen to. i think it is a shame for anyone to only hear the 30-some songs she's actually recorded. So if anyone out there does not have any other Jewel recordings, email me privately and I will send you Jewelstock (A 3 disc collection of her show in '96 (and still, in my opinion, the best angelfood out there) and one other more recent show, of your choice. I have chosen a number in my head. And I will do this for the person that falls in that place when they email me. (In other words, if I chose 3, I will do this for the 3rd person that emails me) Good luck!
