I've always thought it was sad that a classical singer can do an opera without anyone yelling at them for not writing it themself, same with an actor doing a play, but a pop singer is some sellout artist for not writing their own songs. However, the pop songs that are out today are completely made by corporations and generally empty of any musical value, as someone pointed out. What the world needs is some sort of outlet for the good pop singers to perform without contributing to a bunch of silly cheesy marketing tools. And on Britney being too sexual for little kids: I really don't think that sex should be some hidden taboo thing. Britney (or whoever creates her image) uses her body in a sexual way... why should that be something horrible for a kid to see? If a parent doesn't want their kid to dress like that, they can simply say, "hey, that's just a costume," but I don't think the kid is completely corrupted or anything! Here is all I have to say. Britney looks like she spent 5 hours in a make up chair even when its a dressed down photo. I have a picture of Jewel in a Tank top, Jeans and a Leather jacket on my Wall (copy or Rolling Stone cover may 97). She has lipstick on, if any makeup at all. She looks top notch! I went to the Tampa show August 1999- she came out, hair all a mess because she took a nap (bus/dressing room?) before the show, and ROCKED THE HOUSE- standing ovation when she left. Jewel has an Angelic voice, and looks awesome without much help no makeup, no plastic surgery (britney might have) Even if Britney is talented, she still couldnt hold a candle to my EDA. I'm gonna unsubscribe from the list until November, for two reasons: 1. I want to remain myself out of Jewel news until the new album comes out, so I can judge it for myself instead of taking the opinions of other people and critics who have listened the songs. I don't want to commit the same mistake as I did with Spirit and I want this album to be a surprise. 2. I can barely catch up with the e-mails. They are too many and, although I enjoy them very much, I don't have time to read them because of school. So, good bye and take care, until November, Mirko ===== Hotel Angel- Jewel Page in English and Spanish http://members.nbci.com/_XMCM/hotelangeljk/Main.html Get email alerts & NEW webcam video instant messaging with Yahoo! Any guesses as to who wrote "I break the yolks and make a smiley face, I kinda like it in my brand new place" which was in a song that to this day was on the "charts" longer than any single ever? Or maybe "Let the phone ring, let's go back to sleep Let the world spin outside our door, you're the only one that I wanna see Tell your boss you're sick, hurry, get back in I'm getting cold Get over here and warm my hands up, boy, it's you they love to hold And stop thinking about what your sister said Stop worrying about it, the cat's already been fed Come on darlin', let's go back to bed" Marshall ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2001 12:19:44 EDT From: KSco2001@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Brittany Spears writes all songs, but 2 After all this talking, I was watching MTV, and what do you know Diary of Brittany Spears came on so I decided to see for myself. She seems like a sweet little girl, maybe a little immature and she said, "When I am on stage it's my time to go there, and sing, and dance, and be myself, and when I am offstage well I am just such a big dork. Also, On Brittany's new CD coming out she wrote all the songs but two. I was reading my AP English textbook today and the topic was reflected perfectly in our ongoing debate regarding Britney Spears. I hope this clarifies how I feel on the subject... and please no flames. I know we all have different opinions... how boring would this list be if we all agreed on the same thing? (other than our love for Jewel) So here we go: The first chapter of the textbook is based on the difference between an escape book and an interpretive book. The definition of each are as follows... "Escape literature [or in this case... music] is that written purely for entertainment- to help us pass the time agreeably [think Britney Spears]. Interpretive literature [music] is written to broaden and deepen and sharpen our awareness of life [think Jewel]." Escapism takes us away from the real world while interpretive takes us INTO the real world and enables us to understand our troubles. It involves pleasure PLUS understanding. This is how I feel about these two genres of music. Jewel allows us to understand life while Britney Spears merely takes us away from it without stimulating our brain in some sort of way. (and I'm just using Jewel and Britney as two examples. There are a multitude of more examples on both sides.) The book goes on to describe the different readers [listeners]. They use mature and immature to describe them, but I hate that. I enjoy some escapism and I don't think of myself as an immature reader. I also don't believe that since I mostly enjoy the interpretive side that I am a neccesarily a mature reader (listener). But anyways-- the people that enjoy escapism want a story that sums up nicely in the end w/o any questioning or complex thought. Interpretive readers want answers to how the world works or something to make them think and reflect on their own life. Jewel's music and lyrics have always made me think in some sort of way. Here's my main point-- the pop scene of today leaves me empty without any constructive stimulation. I guess I'm the type of person who always searches for answers and I don't like to do anything that doesn't allow me to grow in some sort of way. I always feel better after I listen to Jewel or after I have read a book that makes me contemplate it and think about it constantly. Same with movies-- the teen scene movies reflect the same opinions of the teeny bopper music. Now I'm not bashing the teen scene of music and movies. They have their huge following of fans and I say that's great. It's just not what I enjoy. I hope I clarified my stance just a little bit. ~Rachel~ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2001 16:10:12 EDT From: EastAngelEDA@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: (NJC) lady marmalade I really think it does pertain to something sexual, because the song is about a famous "dancer," at least the original is. I would love to explain it to all of you. Maybe it would help you come to terms with the fact that the saying IS, as a matter of fact, "Would you like to sleep with me tonight" etc, something of that nature. The Moulin Rouge was a VERY famous French strip club in the 1 800-1900s. The girls in the Moulin Rouge video, were dressed like them. The women who worked in the strip club were always, VERY beautiful and VERY risque. The movie is about a woman who can't love because she is a Moulin Rouge dancer. I've had the fact of the saying confirmed by my grandpa, who is a teacher and has actually been to France, AND been to the Moulin Rouge theater. > I really think it does pertain to something sexual, because the song is about > a famous "dancer," at least the original is. We are so glad to meet you all... We'll sure tell all about this to the French EDA's. You're right Jen, the concerts were wonderful and our trip was worth it !!! The coolest thing was when Emilie and I showed up in front of the Humphrey's on the 19th, without tickets and pretty sure everything was sold out already, a guy just in front of us asked for 4 tickets and there were only two left. We were so relived that he didn't buy any of them...... The first show was great but I was kinda disappointed that she didn't play my favorite song Stephenville... Which she did on the 2nd show so everything was so perfect.... What's really nice also, is that she got to play different songs acoustic from show to show.... well, that's all folks We really hope to meet you again soon, maybe in Paris who knows.
