That's the thing though-- Britney Spears DOES not have a good voice, IMO. She sounds so computer enhanced and her "uh uh's" in her songs drive me insane. All she is in it for IS the money and fame-- if she wasn't she'd put on some clothes. She's supposed to be a role model for these little girls, who wanna be like Britney. What kind of message is she sending to these girls (alot of them 4 and 5) when she's hardly wearing any clothes? Or dancing around in a suit that makes her appear butt naked? She's telling these girls its okay to dress trampy like that. And then when the little girls go to their concerts, they wanna dress up like her, wearing skimpy tops and whatever else. Britney is NOT a positive role model for the young generation. And what she sings is not even appropriate for young ears. It doesn't matter that she's not writing what she sings, but that she's marketed towards girls in middle and elementary school. Little girls don't need to hear songs like "Soda Pop"... The same goes for NSync... sure the guys are HOT... but they need to think before releasing an album. Don't they know little girls adore them? Don't they know its little girls who will buying their CD that has implications of getting "nasty" with cybersex? Do little girls need to hear that? Not at all. Its innappropriate for such young ears. If kids are going to be allowed to listen to music like that, they may as well be allowed to WATCH sex on TV. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 17:04:39 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: jewel-digest V6 #373 In a message dated 8/31/01 4:20:25 PM Eastern Daylight Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: > I've only seen Jewel in concert once (on her Spirit tour) and that was at > Merriweather here in Maryland. Many people on the list like the earlier shows better, but I have tapes of a lot of the earlier shows and I found the Spirit concert that I went to just as good, in terms of the content. Maybe that's because she actually played a full acoustic version of Carnivore, which was amazing. Anyway... speaking of A Perfect Circle.. if this is the same group that I'm thinking of, John Freese (the drummer for a perfect circle) has worked on Jewel's next album. Specifically, he did the drums for the song "Jesus Loves You" (which is said to be "percussion heavy" in the album version). The song was produced by John Kurzweg who has worked with Creed and Third Eye Blind. I went to a Britney Spears concert (I promise you I DID NOT PAY... i got a free ticket... and toward the end I was beginning to wish somebody had paid me) and it looked to me as if she was doing something a lot of these young pop artists do, which is "singing to tape".... she sings along with a recording of the song. She does this, supposedly, because she dances etc etc... so she can't sing properly whilst she's doing that. I personally think that's ridiculous, and proof that she's talentless... but anyway. I also read an interview with Janeane Garofolo and she said that friends of hers who work on Saturday Night Live told her that Britney lip-synced her songs on that show. So maybe she's learning guitar, but in my opinion she should learn to do what she's supposedly paid to do - and that's sing. I personally am not a fan of Brittany Spears, nor do I listen to her music other than when I hear her on the radio. I disagree with the statement that she is "supposed" to be a role model for small type tennie boppers. Let me ask you a question is it her fault that those little girls find her cute, and wanna be like her. Do you think that she wants her fan base to be 5-6-7 year olds? I mean riiight. I think the initial image that she created "One More Time"-video attracted to small type teenie boppers, and then she tried to shy away from it by pushing her more sexy side out attempting to reach a wider audience. Shouldn't we put a little more responsibility on the parents? I could easily sit down with a child and explain to her that the way Brittany dresses is not the way that the rest of the world dresses. That she is fake, and that she is putting on a show. I don't know why Brittany is taking all the heat I know a lot of people who have been a million times more sluty than her. Lil' Kim for example, and there are many more. Just be careful who you put the blame on. ~Kris~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 18:14:32 EDT From: LeFideal@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: jewel-digest V6 #373 i was just wondering if anyone is going to the benefit concert for the mayoral candidate mark green in nyc this coming wednesday, and if so if anyone wanted to meet up there alie the faerie princess angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 18:14:37 -0400 From: "cymbaline" Subject: Re: (NJC) RE: [EDA] Standing Still > I personally am not a fan of Brittany Spears, nor do I listen to her music > other than when I hear her on the radio. But whether or not she wants her primary fan base to be young girls, her fan base IS young girls, and she should take into consideration the image she's putting out to these girls. If it were me, and I knew that little girls worshipped me, I'd do my damndest to make sure I set off a positive example for them. I would neither dress promosciously, nor would I sing songs that pertain to sex when I know little ears are listening. It has nothing to do with who she's LIKE her fan base to be, but it's who IS her fan base that she should take into consideration. YOu know that old song, the disco song that had a french phrase that translated "do you want to sleep with me tonight?" well someone remade that... and I was completely SHOCKED when I was at a family friend's house and heard their 9 year old daughter blasting this song on the radio. She knew what it meant too! It's horrible the kind of music young kids are listening to these days. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 18:30:24 -0400 From: "cymbaline" Subject: Re: (NJC) RE: [EDA] Standing Still >I think the initial image that she created "One More Time"-video attracted to >small type teenie boppers, and then she tried to shy away from it by pushing her >more sexy side out attempting to reach a wider audeince. one more thing... "sexy" does not mean you have to wear skimpy clothes. You can wear modest clothing and still be "sexy". Sexy does not mean having your boobs and ass hanging out. I think people got the words "sexy" and "trampy" confused. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 19:02:59 EDT From: GnG849@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Life Uncommon << I've only seen Jewel in concert once (on her Spirit tour) and that was at Merriweather here in Maryland. All she is in it for IS the money and fame-- if she wasn't she'd > put on some clothes. (and learn how to sing) > > That's Just my humble opinion-- don't flame me. first, quickly - the fact that she has an awful voice doesn't mean she's in it just for the money and fame - I'm not saying she's not, but she might think she has an amazing voice, and apparently people at the Mickey Mouse Club, her record company, and millions of fans agree with her. Don't take me wrong, what I wrote actually had nothing to do with Britney Spears - I thought I made that clear earlier on in my post, before I said that someone with a nice voice should be able to sing someone else's music. I'm not a fan of Britney Spears, nor her voice, I think there are a lot of other pop singers (although I don't like that kind of music) who have a much nicer voice, and more talent than Britney Spears, but that's just IMO. What I was saying about singers getting flamed for not writing their own music, I meant as a generalization - I'm constantly hearing that so-and-so sucks because they don't even write their own music, my point was that I don't think that's a fair thing to say. If you think someone sucks - like Britney for example - fine, but judge them on their merits, not on the fact that they enjoy performing and have a nice voice, but can't write songs worth a crap. FYI - What I said, and what Mike later elaborated on strikes a rather large chord personally for me - I have the worst voice in the world, but I love to play guitar, and write music.... should it be fair, *if* I turn out to have talent, and write beautiful songs, that I have to keep them all to myself, just because I can't perform them personally? Some people are gifted with an amazing voice, and no creative capabilities, should they not be allowed to sing my music without being called a sell out for doing it, or untalented? IMO, someone who can sing on key, and sound good (both of which exclude me!) is talented, regardless of who's music they're singing. ~<3~ Sandy - - lavender haunted you, so I could only laugh in yellow - jewel - ..... http://www.envy.nu/angeloflove ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 21:10:32 -0400 From: "Sandy" Subject: Re: (NJC) RE: [EDA] Standing Still > Plus the problem with Britney is that little girls look up to her! She's > supposed to be a role model for these little girls, who wanna be like > Britney. What kind of message is she sending to these girls (alot of them 4 > and 5) when she's hardly wearing any clothes? Okay, once again, I'm going to say, I'm not a fan of Britney Spears, nor was what I said about her, I was talking about all singers who don't write their songs. I agree with you, but it didn't start with Britney Spears. It started with the Spice Girls.... which IMO - was almost worse than Britney, since not on were they running around dancing in trashy clothing, they were also promoting "girl power" while doing this, and to me that translated to: looking slutty and showing your body = girl power! Bad image to send to little girls, and I was disgusted that my neice was a fan, and that she started wanting to look like them. What you said about nsync's music and sending out a bad message is right.....but it's not new either. I also don't think that little girls understand what they are saying, because I remember listening to music, that I now understand, and not believing that I didn't know what it meant then. Case for example: When I was 11 or 12, some very popular songs (& a taste of the lyrics) with my age group were: Gonna Make You Sweat - Inner Circle "girl I'm gonna make you sweat, sweat til you can't sweat no more, and if you cry I, I'm gonna push it push it some more" Freak Me - Another Level "let me lick you up and down, till you say stop, let me play with your body baby, make you feel hot, let me do all the things you want to do, because tonight baby, I want to get freaky with you" or even from a little further back: I Want Your Sex - George Michael "What's your defintion of dirty baby What do you call pornography Don't you know I love it till it hurts me baby Don't you think it's time you had sex with me" "Sex is something that we should do Sex is something for me and you Sex is natural - sex is good Not everybody does it But everybody should " Unfortunately, it's nothing new. The sluttier clothing is new, the music and trashy lyrics aren't. ~<3~ Sandy - - lavender haunted you, so I could only laugh in yellow - jewel - ..... http://www.envy.nu/angeloflove ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 22:26:07 EDT From: RoXyGrL628@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: (NJC) lady marmalade hey! ummm...i believe that in the song "lady marmalade" that cymbie was referring to, it translates to "do you want to sing with me tonight" and not "do you want to sleep with me tonight". at least, that's what my friends who took french told me when i asked them what it meant...just my 2 cents... ~liz ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #374 ***************************
