( DC area EDAs) Hey all!!! My name is Jordana, and i have been a member of this list for about 3 years now. Im writing you all because i will be performing in a play this weekend, and would love to have some EDA support if any of you can come. The play is being put on by a group of George Washington University students. We are acting in it, have done all the advertising, set building, etc etc. It is called the Increased Difficulty of Concentration, and is by Vaclav Havel (the Czech President)...it is a really great play, somewhat absurdist, somewhat farcical, but a lot of fun! Showtimes are this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (23rd 24th and 25th) at 8PM each night. It is being performed at the Carnegie Institute, which is at 1530 P Street NW (the corner of 15th and P near dupont) in Washington, DC. The theater seats about 300 people. Tickets cost $8, and can be bought at the show (arrive 45 mins-half hour early to ensure getting a seat), and all proceeds are going to a charity, the Carnegie Academy of Science Education. It's for a worthwile cause, it'll be a great time, and you can come out and show your support for the arts and fellow EDAs! Hey, maybe itll even be a starting off point for a DC area EDA gathering!!! Hope to see some of you there! and email me personally at gwjewelgrl@aol.com with any questions or comments...also feel free to pass this on to anyone who may be interested! *the mystic angel* Jordana "I'd rather see the world from another angle."-Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 18:28:04 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: [EDA] A Jewel of a summer evening at Humphrey's I found this review of Sunday's show at the San Diego Tribune's web site. - ------------------ A Jewel of a summer evening at Humphrey's By Sarah Sabalos LaSpaluto August 21, 2001 When Jewel took the stage Sunday evening at sold-out Humphrey's by the Bay, she was accompanied by a docile hound dog who helped re-establish the theme: Jewel as unpretentious coffeehouse chanteuse catapulted into stardom and beloved by droves of sensitive young women whose smooth, wood-colored hair sweetly reflects the pink and purple stage lights. That homey image works especially well in San Diego. As fans know, Jewel (born Jewel Kilcher and raised on an 800-acre Alaskan homestead) once lived in a van in Pacific Beach, surviving mostly on carrot sticks and performing weekly at the Innerchange Coffeehouse. Her success transcended the wildest dreams of all broke, struggling musicians. Although her lyrics and poetry have been derided as trite and self-important, Jewel has sold roughly 21 million albums, and her book of verse, "A Night Without Armor," spent considerable time on The New York Times Bestseller List. Briefly crossing over to another medium, she co-starred in Ang Lee's film "Ride With the Devil." (There has been at least one instance of a young fan having her teeth permanently altered to resemble Jewel's.) So along with the hound dog on Sunday, Jewel brought the confidence that comes with these surreal achievements. Almost immediately upon removing her red jacket at the beginning (an act rewarded by enthusiastic applause), she began projecting accessible unaffectedness. "Whoo, she took her coat off!" the singer gently mocked the audience. "That's what I like to be applauded for." As if to show she's more than a pretty blond pop star whose tank top and belt buckle were roughly the same size, Jewel began with an operatic, ethereal song in a foreign tongue that evoked thoughts of Enya. Jewel was so down-to-earth, in fact, that she forgot the lyrics to one of her songs -- "Kiss the Flame" from 1998's album "Spirit" -- and called upon a girl in front to come upstage and whisper them in her ear. The stunt, which could easily have fallen flat, charmed the crowd as the fan hammed up her performance a bit. Jewel is ideally heard accompanied by only her own guitar, because her crystalline, versatile voice is best appreciated on its own. Sunday night's band -- playing together for the first time -- tended to overpower that voice, drowning out its nuances and range. Very occasionally, one even heard something approaching the neer neer neer of an '80s hair-band electric-guitar solo. The hits were there, of course -- "Hands," "Who Will Save Your Soul" and the best-known song about pancakes and eggs in music history, "You Were Meant for Me." Each chart-topper was slightly restyled -- sung higher or rocked-up. The night was heavy on novelty songs, as well as lengthy introductions to them. "This is one of my deep and profound songs," Jewel said of "Cold Song." "Like all truly deep songs, this is a polka." The ditty, about getting frisky while feverish, got its share of laughs, and was immediately followed by the jaunty "Race Car Driver," a song based on a scary hitchhiking anecdote. "I was on the 15 north of Poway," she said of the experience. "Aren't we so local?" The concert contained a good preview of Jewel's album, "This Way," due Nov. 13. Although producers have touted some of its tracks as a "dangerous" stylistic departure, much of Sunday's new fare jibed with Jewel's previous work. The slow, airy ballads were there, as were the interspersed upbeat tunes such as "Standing Still" (one of the few songs enhanced by the band). "Jesus Loves You," a wheatgrass-roots, refreshing dose of liberal folkiness, transported the crowd out of the mainstream pop world. What came closer to "dangerous" was Jewel's authentic scat-sing -- for a few moments she turned the oh-so-California venue into a 1930s New York nightclub -- and her underutilized capacity to get screamy-sexy in a Joplin sort of way. The smooth-haired girls near the front loved it, as did the young parents with small children, the 50-something classic-folk fans, and the guys selling popcorn. It was, in short, a far cry from fighting to be heard over a cappuccino machine. Sarah Sabalos LaSpaluto is a San Diego-based writer. Although I was towards the back of the venue both nights there really isn't a bad seat. It was wonderful. I got to meet a few Eda's. The first night I started crying. But so did a lady two seats down from me so I didn't feel so dumb. But anyway jewel put on an excellent performance. I won't put down a set list now because I really don't remember all the songs. But I will let you know that Jewel asked that we all put our radio stations on redial so that we can request her song "Standing Still" Which I tried to do last night on my 2 and a half hour drive home but the station wouldn't answer their phone. Wonder why, Maybe because it was 2 am. Anyway I'm back home and I have 3pics that you all might like to check out. http://hometown.aol.com/cember76/index.html Hopefully I won't get in any trouble for those and I'm sure there will be plenty more considering the non lack of flashes going off al the end. Guys, why worry about a UK release date... when you can buy it online when it comes out in the US? CDNow ships to the UK, right? They wouldn't deny you the right to having a CD because it hasn't been released in your country... at least I don't think. Or... have someone from the US get the CD for you and send it to you if you can't wait. I, personally, would not mind doing that for a few people, as long as I get reimbursed for my costs. (cost of cd + shipping). I'd only be able to do it for a few people though. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 17:01:48 EDT From: KissTheFlame720@aol.com Subject: [EDA] break me hey angels! does anyone have a download of 'break me'? i would love to listen to it. i watched part of the radioshack concert but i had to leave and i didnt get to hear it :( my mom was getting bored and impatient. anyways, if someone has it, please attach it to an e mail. thanks in advance... love, anastasia AKA stacey the jewel freak angel I'll make him a welcome basket with muffins. I once got taken for this very scam about 6 years ago. Anyone who submits a poem, gets published, that's basically it. It's called "vanity publishing". The reason they do this is to get people to purchase their anthologies with their work in it, which cost $40US+ per anthology, depending on what they feel like charging. A quick glance at their site with "publishing dates" shows they average publishing one anthology *every week*. In this nice anthology, your poem is crudely displayed on one page, in small type, with *6* other poems. If you read through, you'll notice a rather lack of calibre in the writing, especially when a 7 year old's poem is beside your 'fine quality' poem, reading "My doggy is a nice doggy, he's name is Sparky and he likes to do tricks etc." Imagine, 6 poems/page, a good 250-300 pages a book, and even if only half of the "published" authors buy the book...well I don't have to do the math for you. On top of that, as I'm sure you know, or will find out, you can pay an extra $30 to have your 'bio' included in the back of the books, as well as buying your poem on cassette, a plaque, little cards, a coffee mug etc. Now, while you may still want to submit poetry to them, please *do not* waste your money buying countless books (or 'others') from them in which your work is to appear. If I were any of you, I wouldn't spend a cent on anything regarding them, but I also understand how nice it is to see your word in *real* print (they were the first people to publish a poem for me, and although I know now it was a scam, seeing my poetry in a book for the first time was really something else)...so if you are going to buy it regardless, buy one, with your first poem, keep submitting, but don't keep giving them more money to rip other people off. Again, this is just my opinion, you're welcome to do whatever you like.... but it's a shame to waste something you worked on so hard on a scam - find some decent poetry contests, or publishing houses and approach them :) Here are some links for you to check out: http://windpub.org/literary.scams/scams.htm (This is *specific* mostly to the NLP/ILP) http://windpub.org/literary.scams/index.htm (This is that same pages 'links' for each poetry contest scam, so you can read about particular ones or check to see before you enter the contest) http://www.maxpages.com/poetryscams (Great story as proof of their 'not so moral' publishing) http://writerexchange.about.com/cs/scams/ (Here's a list of sites about poetry scams) While getting these links, I read this at the end of an article; Sometimes the truth hurts. For a struggling poet, it can be painful to admit that a letter from a poetry contest or publisher is nothing more than a sales hustle. But what's worse: being honest with yourself or being the victim of a company that exploits the vanity of aspiring poets? ~<3~ Sandy - - lavender haunted you, so I could only laugh in yellow - jewel - ..... http://www.envy.nu/angeloflove ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 17:13:23 -0400 From: "Sandy" Subject: Re: [EDA] UK release date??? > Or... have someone from the US get the CD for you and send it to you if you > can't wait.
