The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) are the ones who give the gold, platinum and diamond awards. They define Platinum as being 1,000,000 units SHIPPED. This means 1,000,000 units have been ordered by stores and therefore shipped to those stores. Gold is 500,000 units SHIPPED and Diamond is 10 000 000 units SHIPPED. So for example, Pieces of You is Diamond, because it has shipped 11 000 000 units. Spirit is 4x Platinum because it has shipped 4 000 000 units (although only 3.5 of those cd's have been sold... the rest are sitting on shelves, which is why everytime you walk into a cd store in america - and even parts of europe - they have usually at least 3-5 copies of Spirit on the shelf). Joy is 1x Platinum, having shipped 1 000 000 units. Spirit did go platinum in it's first week because the record stores had enough faith in Jewel's selling power that collectively they ordered over a million copies of the CD for their shelves. Approximately 300 000 of those CD's were sold that week, and many more in the weeks following (over the weeks of christmas Spirit sold in between 400 000 and 500 000 a week). Nevertheless, in that first week one million Spirit CD's were shipped to stores. Hopefully Jewel's new CD will have similar success (I doubt it will reach the heights of Pieces of You, because those kinds of sales are very unusual). The release date indicates that Atlantic have high hopes for the record. And Atlantic have themselves indicated that they consider the Jewel CD (along with a new album expected from Kid Rock) one of the Big Guns that they hope will raise the returns for the whole Warner conglomerate. My goddaughter came home to visit me for the weekend, she lives in NYC and I live in Cincinnati. When i dropped her off at the home they were staying at, i had to do the carseat switch. Run the baby in to the house with mom, and then run out and grab the car seat. Well, i had the passenger side window down about 6 inches, and my purse sitting on the front seat. I ran in to lay the baby down, and ran back out, knowing my Viper alarm system was on and the doors were locked. well someone reached into the window and stole my purse. They got everything. My Divers license, my Social Security card, 7 credit cards, my debit card, which had 200 dollars in the bank, my check book, 500 dollars cash, my goddaughters pictures, my camera... everything. So i filed a police report and there is nothing they can do. i cancelled everything... including the debit card. My big problem? They got my cash... the only money i have till Sept 14th. All my bills are due, my car, my rent....... and... I just don't know what to do. I guess i can pray, they take the cash, toss the purse, with everything else and a decent human turns it into the police. I mean... they even have my address from my drivers license and check book.... EVEN MY PHONE NUMBER. that is so scary. I am completly broke... and scared... its an awful feeling. I think im going to go curl up on the couch, listen to Jewel and think. I am sure something similar to this has happened to someone... if any one ahs any advice, i would appreciate it. Who knows what they can do with the info they have. and I am very sorry to vent on the list, I know this isnt what it is for. I just know the EDA's are always there for people, and offer prayers and well wishes. I could really use it right now.
