Going on my 4th year through the jr. college system. Sad, ain't it. ;-) Its cause I changed majors, thats all. I've got about 2 semesters till I graduate w/ an AA and transfer to San Diego State-yeah!- Their film/television program is very good and tough to get into. And if I don't make it, I've always got the numerous open mike nites across the coffeehouse landscape to ease my pain. :D Oh and to ya'll who don't think getting a higher degree than just high school is important better get their melons -and nogin- checked. Its gotten to the point where, to get a B.A. -or in my case a B.S.- doesn't guarantee work right out of college cause theres more supply than demand. And I hear that a career in nursing and teaching are in big time demand right now. All you freshman out there, get to the parking lots early and don't give a **** about anybody else when getting a parking spot. j/k! Just make sure you don't cause an accident. Capish. I'm enjoying meeting so many new EDA faces lately and hope to meet a lot more of you in San Diego this weekend, especially all the International EDAs flying in for the Humphrey's shows. Jewel's concert in Vermont Rocked! She sounded awesome and the set list was great! I brought my best friend who is not a jewel fan and she was very impressed.... I don't think I converted her, but she definitely had a good time and was ultimately impressed that Jewel let that girl go up on stage and sing with her, which was so so so awesome! My friend said she liked all the songs Jewel played that aren't popular on the radio and said she thinks Jewel is portrayed in the Media like a corny save-the-world-type and she should let her fun and witty personality be more known. I thought it was an interesting point of view of a non-fan since I already knew Jewel is funny and witty. The funniest thing Jewel said all night was when someone requested Shadows Play and she said, How do you know that song! Besides the fact that she sang it on Jay Leno, I thought, she has to know that us EDA's know all!! I got so use to seeing Jewel with her band on the Spirit tour rocking out and her last two concerts in Central Park and Vermont were just Jewel and the stage. Both ways are great. I wish I could go to a Jewel concert every night! Can't wait for the new CD. Did anyone tape the Vermont Show? I go to De Anza jr. college in Cupertino, CA. Some of you may have heard of it on the news last winter. Two girls working in the photo department of a Longs drugs store came across pictures of a young man and an arsenal of guns and explosives. The girls reported it to the police who intern picked up the kid as he tried to get the pictures. The cops then searched his home where they learned he was a student at De Anza and that at lunch time the very next day he planned to walk into the center of campus and kill as many people as possible. With a variety of around 10 guns and 30 pipe bombs the kid would have unleashed a world hurt on alot of people, friends and myself included. It certainly wouldn't have been the first time my life has been threatend with guns, even at school, but it definately could have been the last if those two girls hadn't stepped in. One of them did her 15 minutes of on all the early morning talk shows. Well, I'm going to De Anza till I finish my GE. Then I'm going to Mission college in Santa Clara to become EMT certified and then a fire fighter. Part II Hey guys! I've been receiving many emails asking me what the hell I was talking about. I guess I just got too excited and did not say all I had... I'll try to answer all doubts (if there's any...) 1) What is that "Vote For Me" thing about? -- Here in Brazil, there is a website that will give a trip to NY and an entrance to VMA (MTV's Video Music Award). All I had to do was go to the site and create a videoclipe, using the tools they themselves gave me. 2) Why you need my help? -- Well, I have no chances to win if get less than 1.000 votes, but I'd like to get 1.500, to feel confortable about it, but if I keep on going the way I am, I'll only get 1.000 votes next year... (I only got 25 until now, how sad is that?). So, I'm quite desperate because it's one of my dreams going down the water, you see... And I thought, "Oh God, where can I get 1.500 votes till Sunday?", and the first thing that came to my mind was: "Jewel"! But as the website is in portuguese, I wouldn't know if the EDA's would help me, because I know sometimes that can be a pain in the ass. 3) Alright, now I'm moved... What do I have to do? - -- hehe... Serious, if you would like to help, follow the steps bellow, I'll be eternily glad! a) Go to www.nescafe.com.br b) Click on the OK button, at the bottom right. c) Now is the most difficult part... You've got to register yourself. After the white line, go like this: (I just wrote the ones you MUST fill in, alright?) - - - "E-mail": *your email" - - - "Senha": *password* - - - "Confirme a senha": *write your password again* - - - "Nome": *your name* - - - "UF": *go for "Rio de Janeiro"* - - - "RG": *number of your ID, or any number with 9 numbers (wow, I spoke beautifully...)* d) Click on the button "Enviar" e) A new BOX will open, saying that they're sending an e-mail to you to CONFIRM. So, you must confirm, ok? Check your e-mail and see if there is a message with the subject "Confirme seu cadastro". Then, click on the only thing that is underlined ("clique aqui"). A new window will open, just to say that you are registered. f) After all this, return to the main page www.nescafe.com.br g) At the bottom right, there are 2 blanks. In the first you must write your EMAIL, and in the second one you must right your PASSWORD. Click OK. h) Now, at the top right there is a kinda orange blank, isn't it? Write "O Bafafa" to go the votation. i) Click on the underlined "o bafafa". j) Click where you see 3 cups and then click the button "VOTAR". It's all folks!! See, wasn't THAT hard.. (maybe just a little...) Please guys, do this favor for your fellow EDA... I promiss I'll bring a souvenir for everyone, hehe... Once again, sorry for pointing that out another time... Big hug, Fabio PS: Please, those who already voted, could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE vote again? I mean, I'm afraid the first rules I gave you were kinda wrong... But, as you are already registered, it'll be easier. Some folks have asked for more details about Vermont, so here's my take on the show. It seems the most common word used in the Vermont reviews was "awesome", and I couldn't agree more. Jewel was in tremendous form, delivering a relaxed, compelling solo acoustic guitar performance. And she was in perfect voice. While not quite as chatty as she was in Nashville (how could she be in a venue with six thousand people compared to fewer than 200?), she was very conversational, easily mixing the traditional yarn-spinning we all love (hitchhiking story for Race Car Driver, etc.) with many spontaneous comments and quips. She was wearing blue jeans, a white, sleeveless top and a jean jacket which she removed very soon into the show. She also wore a huge, very noticeable belt buckle, which I theorized was either borrowed from Ty, or meant Jewel had won the WWF Intercontinental title. Turns out to be the former.... Steve Poltz opened with his customary engaging set. He's just amazing. Most of the crowd really dug him, but there were a number of folks who were offended by - how shall we describe it? - Steve's colourful language.... Didn't bother most of the audience, as Steve's appearance at the merchandising table drew a gigantic line. He sold every single item he had brought with him, which was supposed to last for several weeks of his current touring. Way to go Steve! Jewel joined Steve during his set for Silver Lining, and then Steve was summoned by Jewel for three duets during her performance. Jewel played 21 songs in all in her set, 14 of which she had played in Nashville. So, one third of the show was different from the week before. A very respectable set change, especially considering I may have been the only fan there who was actually at both events. As mentioned, she opened up with an operatic version of the old chestnut "You are My Sunshine," which was weird and wonderful, but I'm not sure which one would apply more. Apparently, it was a first-ever performance of that song for her. Anyway, here is my recollection of the set lists. First Steve: Steve's set 1. Kiss Your Ass 2. Ten Chances 3. Chinese Vacation 4. ABC's 5. Water You Everyday 6. Silver Lining (duet with Jewel) 7. Manchester Song (made up for the occasion) 8. Dog Do Blues 9. I Love Everything About You 10. Impala 11. Waterfalls 12. Monkeys Flying Out of Your Ass Jewel's set: 1. You are My Sunshine 2. Does Anyone Believe in Love 3. Stephenville 4. Morning Song 5. Little Sister 6. The New Wild West 7. Sometimes It Be That Way 8. Gray Matter 9. I've Been Down So Long (duet with young fan) 10. Cold Song 11. Race Car Driver Next three with Steve Poltz 12. I Thought I Saw You Last Night 13. My Body Is Changing 14. You Were Meant for Me 15. Long Slow Slide 16. Break Me 17. Hands 18. Who Will Save Your Soul Encores 19. Par La Gloria D'Ladoraus 20. Chime Bells (acappella) 21. Angel Standing By All of this augurs extremely well for the future. Jewel's recent absence from the music scene and industry seems to have genuinely refreshed her. Her new songs are strong compositions, and The New Wild West is a knockout: a philosophical descendent of Dylan's "It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding." I suspect we're going to be happy bunch when the CD comes out in November... Cheers!
